Harold Groves made great bows in Albuquerque from the 1950s until he died in 1997. I was one of his pallbearers and close friends. His pre-stress system was designed by the top scientists at Los Alamos Labs, where Harold worked as a machinist. They did it as a stress-relieving fun project. Harold was adamant that the "eggheads" deserved the credit for designing the bow. The result was the fastest recurve bow ever made. Today if you can find one, you can expect to pay from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the model and the condition. They haven't been made since 1998. I own three. Just shot in a tournament two weeks ago in Scotland with one, and the other guys couldn't believe the speed and smoothness of taking the shot. Harold's daughter, Sandy Burbridge, has compiled a book about Harold and the Spitfire bow. I can recommend it to those who are interested.

Over the years I have had countless recurve bows, I have never concerned myself much with arrow speed,just cared if they cast an arrow well or not. A few days ago in some bow trading I ended up with a Groves Spitfife. This bow is without question the fastest bow I have ever owned!!!

I was a dealer for Groves when they began offering bows again until James Elrod decided to stop building them. I shoot a 56" Spitfire Mag one piece. I believe, could be wrong, the Flame Hunter DID NOT have Dynastressed limbs.

You can do a search on Groves Bows, there is plenty of information on the net about them. My only regret was not getting the Mag II. Easy transportation and would have made a great backup bow with it's 2 pc T/D design.

When I was a teenager, my sisters and I used to take aluminum shafts, put points on them and fletch them to sell at Harold Groves Archery on San Mateo Avenue in Albuquerque, where he had his shop, store and indoor range. The range had targets that could move from the shooting line to differing distances away by controls at each station. Spent many hours practicing there. We also made custom bow strings to sell there. Harold's wife had a beautiful take-apart bow that he made for her that had the record for the fastest lightweight (31-pound pull) bow in the world. He trimmed the handle to fit for me. I used it for competition and won a few matches before I started supporting myself. (Maple stock with cherry wood trim.)
