Looks like shotgun season is going to be a little nippy. One crazy weather year.

For sure! At deer camp last week, we had the AC going in the camper. Quite a turn around, but that's Illinois weather for you. Gun season is going to be cold! Reminds me of my first seasons when I nearly froze to death in 80's;)

I went to pope co for 40 plus yrs. One yr was 4 inches of snow and 2 yrs later shorts and playing bean bags. Still a good week of beer, fish fries with friends and old BS stories. I haven't gone the last few yrs because most of the old timers are gone. It's hell to get old.

Just getting out to the farm in Marion County now. Good luck to this hunting this weekend and stay safe.

Winds around 18 mph, wind chill around 9. Glad I’m not out.

Couple places I hunt should be good next week. No gun hunting allowed, so the deer seem to hide out there. For a few days anyway.

In my little part of the world I just cant see how it is possible. From the gunshots, and reports from the deer camps I attend, I would of guessed we would be down by a lot. Its crazy that the harvest keeps rising.

i'm a old fart. I hunted pope county for 40 yrs. It sounded like a war in the 80's now hardly any shots plus I 57 was packed with hunters in the old days. Not now. So believe what you want and but who really believes the government.

It is illinois. Lies & retirements manage our herd. I can see the harvests rising. With the rifles, all archery season crossguns, late season permits. They have ONLY increased methods to destroy the herd. Nothing to preserve it. Get used to it. It's only going to get worse. JMO

“Lies & retirements”? How’s that work?

It's hunter greed. The state don't care as long as they sell permits. The northern part of the state has CWD and the state is issuing numerous permits. Some hunters just looks short term with the extra doe tags. IF IT'S BROWN IT'S DOWN thinking is killing the herd. In the 70's you might see deer 25% of the time and at it's peak roughly the late 90's to seeing deer 50-75% of the time now back to 70's standards. it's pretty hard to get grand kids interested if you don't see anything.

Hunted both Knox and Grundy Counties during the first shotgun season. Buck sightings were rare and only smaller bucks seemed to be moving in areas where we have several large bucks captured on trail cams. Several does were seen but heard very few shots during the 3 days hunted. Very cold and high winds could have contributed to lack of action.

People used to do deer drives and were terrible shots. As a consequence you would hear a ton of shots of people shooting at running deer. Nowadays most have rifled barrels and are more patient and accurate. So you get more deer killed with less shots.

I would say I don’t necessarily trust the numbers but I saw more deer this year than any year. I didn’t shoot any because they were not big enough but if I wanted a deer there were plenty to chose from. I will also agree the amount of shooting was down from previous years.
