It's a realitivily strong oily fish. It acts like Salmon when you smoke it. Some people hate it, we love it. To each their own I guess. Smoked fillets freeze good too. I will be making some smoked fish dip this weekend.

Nice mess, and Warsteiner is one of my faves!

Working the dog this morning at Augusta Lake, somebody caught up with a nice cat!

Jason: Nothing wrong with eating bass. I fried up a couple of meals of bass last night. I am not quite as fond of them as Crappie or Walleye, but they are close in my book. I will eat the second meal tonight. In order to maintain a healthy fishery, some bass need to be removed.

I can’t believe Dave didn’t show us a pic of that Cat before he took the filets off.

Yeah Bass is good eating but I’ve never had walleye to compare it too though.

You must have great taste in beer Sito!

Don't get me wrong... bass is way better than most other things you can eat, but it isn't walleye. I need to find a way to cook it (other than fried) that is kind of healthy.

What was that Cat? Didn’t quite hear ya…naw running ran away from me again. I went just earlier since you said something and it was downright pitiful. I had to pull up after just 2 laps. Can’t believe I went from 3 miles just a year or 2 ago to this.

Caught a few crappie @ QSR today

My wife and I went out this morning to our favorite watershed. Bass and crappie were a bit slow, but the channel cats made up for it. We kept 7 to filet for the, 4 for landowner and 3 for us. We released another 7 or 8 of the same size. All caught on 3” shad body with #2 Colorado spinner blade.

Not uncommon to catch some bullheads while jigging for crappie.

28-Aug-23
We have fished this watershed for a number of years now, and it was never unusual to catch 1 to maybe 3 channels on spinners while bass fishing. I have never had a day like today where we caught 14 or 15, 3# to 6#.

Jason, we were in about 5’ of water, throwing to the bank, and I using just enough speed to keep from snagging the bottom. I caught 2 that nailed the spinner as soon as it hit the water, rolled on the surface and then went deep as soon as I set the hook. I missed 2 that tried to hit the same way, and I tried to set the hook to quick and missed them as they rolled on the surface. Others hit on the retrieve in 2’ to 4’ of water just above the bottom and they all hit hard.

It’s normally about a 35 acre watershed, but it’s probably 8’ low looking at the spillway. This is the 1st time I have seen it where all vegetation around the shoreline was out of the water with 3’ of bare bank showing all around the perimeter. I checked the stomachs on 3 to see what they were eating and their stomachs were empty. Im hoping they’re not running out of forage after seeing how aggressive they were today.

From: Catscratch
29-Aug-23
I hope you just caught the perfect timing and hit a feeding frenzy, rather than they've eaten all the forage. Sounds like a blast of a trip!

I had the same fears this year. The watershed I fish was low for a long time. Last Feb I started catching a lot big and fat bass. This summer I started catching small and very skinny bass. I was afraid that with it so low they had eaten all the bait fish. I'm seeing little ones in the shallows now, but have caught very few bluegill this summer compared to normal. Hopefully everything bounces back.

Wow, that looks like some awesome fishing sit0! I'm envious!

I went halibut fishing once in Oregon. I was on one of only a few charters that went out that morning. 56 foot long boat. When we were in a trough you couldn't see anything other than walls of water around you, and when it was on a crest it would rock/shutter/crash coming down off it. I puked a lot that morning, a whole lot! Most everyone else did too, even a guy who had made a living on a salmon boat for 20yrs who said he'd never been sea-sick a day in his life. I'd do it again!

I am jealous of those fish. My freezer is lacking fish, so yesterday afternoon, I decided to go to a pond that usually produces Crappie for me. As it turns out I should have gone hunting. I had a flat tire and my pickup is at the service station getting two new tires as the flat was ruined. I did catch about 50 Crappie, but they were only about 6 inches long. Hopefully, they will be good sized in a couple of years.

I have never been a winter time fisherman. But after seeing Aaron post up his winter crappie pics. I am going to take the boat out this winter. When do the crappie start to pile up on the deeper structures? And what depths do you generally fishing for them at?

From: AaronShort
13-Nov-23
You don't have to go deep. Even in the heart of winter I will find some schools on top of brush that are only 6-10 feet down. Find structure close to drop offs and you will get on some fish. Once my buck fever goes away I'll start fishing again and give some better tips. I haven't been on the water for six weeks now. I'm not sure which is worse, buck fever or fishing withdrawals...

Will the crappie be constantly changing depth and structure all year? Or will they settle into "winter spot" and pretty well stay. The lake I am planning on hitting for crappie has several (around 7) sunken trees scattered over a 400yd stretch in 12-20ft of water. I have never fished in the winter. But if they do go there, will they be there all the time? Or do they roam?

From: Catscratch
09-Dec-23
^^^ I'm curious as to the answer of KsRancher's question too. I fish brush in the winter and catch a lot of crappie, but if I don't catch anything I assume they weren't biting. Could be they had just moved and aren't there at that moment? With that said I catch them very regularly in the winter on brush so I'd guess they do spend a lot of time there. I'm not an electronics guy so I only know where they are if I'm catching them.

From: Ksgobbler
10-Dec-23
They roam some. Yesterday my cousin was catching crappie in open water. He caught 28 including a 15" and 16" fish. The other day we checked alot of brush looking for fish. Some had none. Some had a few. None of them had what I like to see this time of year. The maddening thing is when you can see them down there, thump em in the head with a jig, and they still won't bite.

From: AaronShort
11-Dec-23
Lakes vary depending on how much structure it has and the quality of shad. I've found they become more stationary after the lake freezes over for a few weeks. As Ksgobbler stated it can be frustrating when you can see them and they wont even think about looking at your jig. Or even worse when they come up and swipe at it but you wont feel a thing. Walleye are notorious for that!

From: Ksgobbler
12-Dec-23
Today was a day that you could hit them in the head with a jig and they dont care. I caught 1 fish in 4 hours. Missed a couple others. Partner caught 4.
