Never paid attention to the acorn crop in the past. Was out hiking this weekend. It’s been hot, no rain. Saw no acorns on the oak bushes, makes sense given the conditions. I’m looking around for water and food for bears, is the lack of acorns this time of year normal?

I've always had trouble finding areas with producing acorns. But they should be out by now for sure, small to medium and green, and bears/birds eat them now. If you haven't found any, keep looking in different areas.

Thanks, was kind of thinking that.

I looked at a lot oak brush yesterday. I remember seeing one small green acorn on the ground and no fresh bear sign. Even around water.

I was mountain biking in the foothills over the weekend and saw a couple of green acorns on the trail. I haven't been particularly looking, but these were the first I noticed this year, which suggests any trees that produced this year should have some.

Also look for pinons, many times the birds (jays, etc.) give clues where they are producing as a flock can make a lot of noise.

One year I was glassing a "desert" hill and spotted a bear eating prickly pear fruit, so that's another source to look for.

I've seen good crops in the northern mountains in the last couple weeks where they've had good late spring/early summer rains.

The Gila had plenty of them, they weren't as big as usual but they were everywhere I went.
