Cody's buck from today

From: Rut Nut

NICE BUCK Cody! Congrats!

No bucks seen today but did see a momma and yearling “grooming” each other this morning. . Watched them for almost 30 min at 100+ yards. Feeding them grooming. Then this afternoon had a woodcock WALK past my stand at 20 feet thru the brush. Haven’t seen one of those in over a dozen years! Also had 2 woodpeckers chasing each other around for 20 min batting each other with their wings, chirping and making a racket! It was an entertaining day in the woods even if there was not rutting activity. Hopefully Monday we’ll see some bucks.................

Nice buck Cody...

I'd bet there isn't an inch and a half of deductions there. Nice.

Congrats to the successful hunters!

I had a small buck work a nearby scrape at first light yesterday morning. I had heard some chasing as I climbed my tree in the dark so I knew there were likely other deer nearby. Heard a fawn bleat and later saw a big doe and 3 young ones feeding my way. Big doe finally came in range and I took the 16 yard shot. Double lunged her and she maybe went 60 yards before going down. She let out a bawl and the 3 young ones came running to her then stayed around for the next hour trying to figure out what to do. Finally they left and I took care of my doe as some plans had been made with some family to make a drive at our farm at 1 PM. My uncle who is still recovering from a reverse shoulder replacement surgery shot a small doe with his crossbow but no bucks were seen. That was surprising with all of the sign we saw while making the push. It should only get better this week.

Tip for folks having trouble posting their photos. Mine look fine in my photos app but when I post them they are upside down or 90 degrees off. If I edit them in the photo app (rotate to compensate for how they are posting) and add them they look as they do edited in the photo app. When I rotate them back to normal in the photo app and post again it loads fine.

We set up 3 blinds and 1 ladder stand in the timbered property we hunt in Armstrong County, just across the creek. The deer have not left, just altered their travel routes a little. During late afternoon football we took turns looking thru the binos at 6 or 7 deer next to the house one of which we never saw or had pictures of before. Thought it was the wide 7 point, but turned out to be a wide 4 X 2 six point. No real chasing going on there.

Way to go Curtis, Gene and Bowbender’s son! I had a small 6 walk under me at 10y this morning. He was scent checking a trail from the woods across a field with his nose down almost the whole way! Picked wrong stand though- at 6;45 I had a buck come out into field right where we go in to Dan’s stand. Must have walked right by it. I was debating between the 2 and picked wrong again! LOL! Not sure exactly what it was, but was definitely bigger..................grunted 3 times and stopped it, but couldn’t get it to come in.

Then while we were eating lunch an 8pt came out into the field near the house where we were looking to hang my climber. No good climber trees so we hung it and fixed a ladder to the tree to get into it and a lifeline of course.

Hopefully he or the 4x2 from yesterday comes back tonight. I’m all set! ;-)

Some nice bucks and doe's here! Congrat's!! No deer sightings tonight, or on camera's overnight.

Well, watched deer in the field for over an hour last night. At first a button buck and an 8 pt and then some does filtered out. Hard to tell if the 8 was the nice one we saw earlier, but something told me it was a little smaller. It actually bedded in the field at 58y and got a good look and decided to pass if it came close. That was confirmed when the other 8 appeared in the field and chased the smaller one off. He was definitely the bigger dominant buck. Then the bigger 8 chased a doe into the lower field and eventually the doe circled around and crossed in front of me at 17y. The buck followed her and I drew at 17 y at last light but couldn’t see thru the peep. He crossed the hedgerow and came out into the upper field which was a bit lighter so I drew again and could see the deer’s outline but just couldn’t quite see very clearly so I let down. Just didn’t feel confident in the sight picture- just didn’t feel right, so let him walk. SO CLOSE!

Chise got a doe at the other property over in Armstrong Co. so we hung it in the barn packed with ice. We’ll take care of it after the morning hunt hunt today.

Going back to “Dan’s stand” this morning.

Sounds like a trip to an outfitter.

Congrats on the Wise Choice Perry !! All to uncommon in this day and age. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor especially in the hunting woods. He may show up again in the next few days.

From: Rut Nut
07-Nov-23
Thanks Steve! I could see the outline of the deer the second time I drew, but couldn’t see well enough to “pick a spot” so it was a NO GO for me.

John- sure feels like hunting with an “outfitter!” : )

Ok- we’re back out by noon trying to catch the mid-day bucks cruising for hot does. Might try a little calling and rattling................

This morning I got to Dan’s stand well before daylight.............unfortunately the deer were already there. I had my red light on so never saw them but heard them tear out of there. Nothing moving after that.

07-Nov-23
I harvested a 6 point up in 2f , Venango county today up near my camp ... don't know how to post pictures on here lol... good day in the woods but activity was slow , saw him and 1 other deer ....

From: Rut Nut
08-Nov-23
Congrats Shawn!

I watched a button buck For almost 90 min yesterday feeding in the field. 30 min later a buck came out I think the same buck that walked under me Monday came out and “bumped” the button buck then went down into the lower field. Also had a doe come out the last hour but the bigger bucks did not show.

08-Nov-23
Way to go Shawn! Perry has reported that he has already seen the 5 point this morning from yesterday almost a half mile away in the next hollow outback. He says he is a small buck magnet.

From: Bowbender
08-Nov-23
Congrats, Shawn!!

This morning I was in the stand my son shot his 8pt out of. Had a small 4pt come in, shred a small sapling, then bed down about 30 yards away. Stayed there for about an hour. Around 9am a chunky spike came thru. Climbed down at 10:30am.

Side note. Be careful what stands you let your son hunt out of. Apparently it's "his" stand now, and I have to ask permission! lol lol

From: Rut Nut
08-Nov-23
LOL Tom! Remind him who brought him into this world! ;-)

Had a VERY interesting morning! I had that little 5 pt walk under my stand at 7y at 6:45. At 7:55 I see a buck at 60y behind some brush. He stopped and I see a doe is behind him (actually beside him but uphill from him and he is closer to me). I got glimpses of his rack thru the brush but never saw him clearly. But then I hear a buck vocalization I have never heard in the wild! Very deep, long and loud GROWLS! It was surreal! I grunted at him several times but he was locked on that doe. He wouldn’t leave her. He growled 6 times in 3 min then she started walking and he was right on her tail. One of the coolest things I ever seen/heard in the woods!

Then 20 min later a 3 point came out of the creek bottom. It looked like a spike but it had a brow tine(not a fork, it was lower on the main beam like a brow tine). Never saw one like that before.

So 3 bucks before 8 am..................pretty neat morning!

I had to leave at 11 to come home to get ready for an appliance delivery and move some furniture but hope to get back at it Tomorrow evening!

08-Nov-23
Thanks guys, this bowhunting is fun mostly when everything comes togeather, i was hunting a big piece of public land that joins the state gamelands just all woods no fields , no cornfields just woods what's the chane that 6 point walks right under my stand.. at 8 yards ... outside of oil city...

09-Nov-23
Chise and I saw some does this morning. Got into blinds before it rained then sat thru about 15 minutes of it. Sun came out for a few minutes.

From: Rut Nut
09-Nov-23
I got in my climber at the other end of the field where the deer have been coming out in the evenings. Watched a momma doe 2 yearlings and a button buck for over an hour but no bucks came out. Figured one of the bucks would show, but no luck. Was hard to stay undetected with all those eyes, but somehow I did. The deer didn’t want to leave so eventually Art came out and shined the spotlight so I could get down. LOL!

Keep after them Perry and everyone else!

I'll be out hoping to fill another doe tag or 2 this weekend with my trusty old Bear Grizzly.

Good luck, have fun and stay safe!

10-Nov-23
Chise saw 3 bucks this morning between 50 and 200 yards apart. This afternoon he is back at the spot where he saw 2 of the 3. Perry has a new set up he will try this afternoon and Saturday.

From: Rut Nut
10-Nov-23
Thanks Jim- good luck to you!

I’m pulling out all the stops! ;-) Got a scent dripper set up on an active scrape 17y from my climber. Set it up after the morning hunt and it is dripping. Ready to do 2 all day sits if necessary. Been doing some calling and rattling too......................

10-Nov-23
Perry, are you still hunting the "preserve "?

From: Rut Nut
10-Nov-23
Yes. The Madison Shop Preserve. ;-)

No deer spotted tonight but I like that spot! Gonna stay out tomorrow all day if need be.

Chise shot a nice 7 point this afternoon but he lost the blood trail. They’re gonna go out later in the morning and try to pick up the trail. Nate and I are gonna hunt for a couple hours then help if needed. Hopefully we are not needed.............for both (Chise and) our sakes! ;-)

3 generations tagging out in week 6.

Disclaimer *** my dad did use the "other" weapon, but he has had both shoulders done and is kinda old...just glad he keeps hunting.

My buck and my dad's came from the same stand, Cody's was about 1/2 mile away.
