Finally, a nice weekend and likely, most of the week. Have fun Sunday if you choose to go out in the church of mother nature.

Might get out tomorrow afternoon. Maybe another afternoon next week. Son wants to save his doe tag for flintlock season.

11-Nov-23
Still have doe tags that need filled. As a side note, we SHOULD be allowed to hunt on Sunday every day the season is legally open.

Week 7 starting out rough for this guy! Shot over the back of a doe at 30y at 7:05 then 40 min later I stand up to get in position and look for gobblers to my right and spook a BIG doe that was coming in over my left shoulder. Never saw/heard her until it was too late. : (

Hopefully I get a chance to redeem myself............

just back last night from two weeks in PA, great time with family. Tough hunting Elk County, deer herd is not in the best of shape but did have a few nice bucks on trail cam. This is the one I hunted for the most but didn't show in the daytime. Did have another nice 10 point several times in front of one stand...all between 12 and 2AM. Four of us were bowhunting and saw few bucks in the daylight. Brother had a 400 lb bear at 20 yards, forgot to buy a tag. Nephew had a smaller bear rip his trailcam off the tree, had some great pics haha. I had the nice 10 point, about 20 inch spread at 20 yards Thursday morning about 10 minutes after shooting hours, came grunting the whole way in, unfortunately it was in a drizzle rain and gloomy and just couldn't see the deer well enough to pick a spot so didn't shoot. Had two forks within 15 yards. Strange thing was, I didn't see a turkey the whole trip, though my nephew did shoot a jake. Was interesting being in that area during the elk hunt the first week. Also first time ever didn't see an elk. Just wish they managed the deer differently in the northern tier, lots of empty habitat. But, I will keep coming back, my second favorite place to hunt!

Tom pennsylvania hunting is tough ... they went to the 2 week buck or doe in rifle season, my opinion is that they over harvested doe .. some hunters mite disagree with me , I do rifle hunt now and then but I havnt shot a deer with my rifle in about 10 years , I try to get meat in the freezer in archery season , last 2 years I've harvested bucks with my bow , and the last 10 years I've atleast harvested a doe in archery , I will be at my camp first day of rifle in forest county but I will be carrying my custom 54 calibur flintlock, I havnt shot a doe with a high power rifle in years ... I like to see my nephew get a deer , he don't get out much he lives in Virginia, I mentored him a couple years ago , when he got his first deer it was like I was so happy took me back to when I was 13 and harvested my first..

yea its tough, I do pretty good bowhunting but have done the two weeks in PA for the last 5 years and have not released an arrow. I have seen the doe population drop greatly in the last several years and think the combination of longer seasons and more weapons seasons and the concurrent deer season in the Northern regions is taking its toll. Besides the area I hunt has become elk viewing famous and some of those visitors now hunt there. I grew up in a camp at the bottom of Winslow hill and the elk viewing area. Things have changed dramatically. Its tough to sit in a treestand day after day and not see anything. As a result, alot of the old camp crowds stay home to hunt. PGC needs to change their management in those mountain regions, especially 2G in my opinion.

Tom even spots in some southern western Pennsylvania is tough I live in 1a lawerence County, I only had 1 chance to shoot a doe in archery I let her go cause I saw a 8 point chase her a hour before , and I hunt alot , I did take a doe in early flintlock season, I hunted the whole week think I had 60 hours in the woods saw 9 or 10 deer that week , I did get lucky and harvested a 6 point outside of oil city pa... but yea the deer hunting has changed alot with longer season , crossbows in archery season which I think should just be for youth hunters , and older hunters or hunters with shoulder or other disabilities... and the woods up there are so big it takes some hunters in there to get the deer moving , but in years past when they did 2 weeks of doe in rifle season I've hunted first day of rifle and saw no deer all day that's bad when you have hunters in the woods .. but some places up north are getting better in area I hunt not to many people shoot does , and alot of hunters hunt till noon and there done ...

An hour and a half after Rut headed for home today a shooter buck was in the field beside my house. It walked off past the tree he had been in earlier last week. It should look even better next year.

Yeah, I really protected some bucks this year! LOL! The 5 point that walked under my stand TWICE, the nice 8 that I let walk at last light Tuesday because I couldn’t see thru my peep and multiple shooters that walked by the stand I did NOT choose to hunt that day! Well, that’s bowhunting! Had about as much fun as you could have withOUT killing something! Saw and heard stuff I never had before..................and got to hang out with some of the best people you will ever meet! All in all a great week................. : )

That's what it's all about Rut Nut. Well, that and actually killing something:)

Kathy and I had a great time being the outfitter this past week. We never started out to do that, but that is just the result of having good friends (who) show up for the best week of bowhunting. I was back to landscaping around the house the last two days. Gearing up for bear and rifle season. Maybe finally fill a doe tag and get Kathy in the blind, plus some trapping.

Hunted Thurs-Sunday, very slow. Scrapes not being worked and no bucks seen cruising. Doesn't help that the acorn crops isn't great where we are too. We started running into bucks and does locked down in the thick stuff. This buck was 32 yards from my brother and quartering to him, I was a bit further from him and in a worse position, so I grabbed my camera. Unfortunately he never presented a good clear shot with the thick brush (for bow or camera). Exciting encounter on a nice buck though. Adjusted on Sunday and saw does with no bucks in tow, figures!!!

Shot this guy on November 10th. Second year of chasing him. Lost his doe and was out searching when I shot him at 11:50. 156" with a 21.5" inside spread

Man that is some deer. Hope you kept the bottom jaw. I'd love to know its age, and what part of the state its was taken in.

GREAT buck! CONGRATS! I too am interested what county you took him in....................................

16-Nov-23
Wow that's a slammer .. congrats

16-Nov-23
South western PA, never really thought about keeping the jaw. I would say he is 4.5, maybe 5.5, but pictures from last year he doesn't look super big bodied.

Getting in one last sit of the season.

I was out changing out the camera cards in between the rain drops this morning. Lots of fresh scrapes and rubs that I didn't see a few days ago. Raining here all afternoon so far.
