Saturday November 11th was the start of my annual three day hunt with my buddy, Seth. We headed to a new area of state forest neither of us had ever set foot on. It took us an hour to drive to a spot I can see from my house and always wondered about hunting. We parted ways as dawn was breaking and agreed to meet up around 10 AM. I walked down an unmarked road and found a scrape near where I wanted to peal off into a terrain feature I thought would funnel rutting activity. As I prepared a scent wick to drag behind me the sound of a deer approaching hit my ears. I quickly grabbed my bow and pulled an arrow from my quiver as a nice buck trotted out of the gray woods. He looked at me briefly then continued on his path toward the old road I was crouching on. His rack was high and stood well beyond his ears. He was a shooter and I was about to get a shot barely 10 minutes into the hunt. My bow came to full draw when he passed behind a cluster of saplings and I was on him when he stepped into the clear at 30 yards. My mind and body were already shifted into auto pilot and the shot was gone. I heard a loud crack and the buck bolted 50 yards, looked around, and melted into the woods and out of my life. Turns out the buck was 35 yards and a broken arrow was all I had to show for my early encounter.

Seth and I both remarked at the unbelievable number of squirrels we observed that morning. It seemed every direction we looked we could see 5-7 different squirrels at one time. Turning my head slightly revealed the presence of another 3-4 different squirrels. The truly remarkable thing was that they were all foraging hard and not really competing. There were so many acorns and an incredible concentration of squirrels to match nature’s abundance.
