Phil has poked his head out and no shadow, early spring. I hope so. with no ice to go fishing it's rather boring this winter. Good thing I have a lot of broken crap to work on in the shop.

Well, the way I see it we didn't have winter but we had an extended fall or just spring. I'm still fishing, 8-12" in the northern part of the state. Going sunday.

Might have to make a run north. Ice is very sketchy here just north of 64.

A friend of mine lives over by Hayward and they are pulling all the stakes and signage off the lakes marking the snowmobile trails. With no snow to insulate them they are deteriorating quickly.

By next week all the snow here will be gone. Just an inch or two of crusty stuff left. It sure doesn't look like February.

The snow is rapidly disappearing here in northern Dane Co. I hope to get up to my Sauk Co. hunting property next week,...I'd imagine the snow up there will be mostly gone by then,...should make searching for a shed antler or two much easier. Looking for an early Spring, hope so! I have plenty of improvements planned for my woods this year.

This is great weather to do habitat work if you have land. Too bad I'm working 6 days a week to pay for the land. It could be worse, so I'll quit whining.

Soon it will be time for frost seeding for any of those who use this method of planting.

Just listened to a Home & Garden AM Radio show on my way back to Minnesota this morning, callers called in saying they have begun tapping trees. One caller asked about tapping black walnut trees.... anyone has any experience with black walnut syrup?

Mike - I had an old friend that tapped every tree imaginable. He said some were good and others were horrendous. I just tapped Maple, box elder (member of the maple family) and Birch. Black Walnuts can be tapped for syrup. Walnut syrup is typically darker than maple syrup with a more earthy and have robust flavor.

Well its running today by me. I put out 2 taps just to see. Need to get going on it tomorrow. Some trees are starting to bud.
