Marine helicopter helps rescued lost Boy Scout boaters

YUMA, Ariz. – The Marine Corps helped rescue a Boy Scout troop that got lost while canoeing on the Colorado River.

According to the Yuma Sun, the 32-member troop in 16 canoes ended up stranded when they couldn't find their way out of an area of dense, tall reeds.

The group was reported missing late Saturday after they failed to check in at their destination.

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office asked the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma for help when searchers couldn't locate the troop.

Marine Capt. Wes Urguhart says his crew used night-vision goggles to spot the troop in a lake that connects to the river.

Urquhart says then was able to guide boats carrying sheriff's personnel to the vicinity, and those boats then escorted the canoes to a landing.

Did that on the boundary waters, we ziged when we should have zaged. Ended up in a lake that had these funny large coins on a rock that said US and CAN.. T he leaders turned us around and headed us back the right way!! They would have figured it out if they would have had the time!

But they probably had a GPS! Yup. Rely on a battery and a microchip for your survival and you WILL be disappointed!

(If you survive....)

I reckon I'll never be lost unless I happen to die headed in the wrong direction. Being lost ain't a state of being. It is always a state of mind.

A Marine VHF Radio would have come in handy too. They are waterproof.

It has been a while since I maintained Avionics on Marine Planes, but back in my day, the Military VHF Frequency Bands were still capable of listening to Marine Guard ( Emergency ) bands.

I am unfamiliar with the new Singars Radios, or if they are even capable of VHF Frequencies.

When canoeing down a RIVER, all you need is a "water compass."

Here's how it works:

1. Pick up a dead stick (water compass)

2. Throw it in the river. It'll float DOWNSTEAM.

3. Follow it.

Any questions? I would think that even Doc could make this work....!
