I was up bear hunting yesterday and when I got home my right knee was pretty sore. Not goo since I'm leaving on the 7th to go elk hunting. Latter I looked at it and it was turning red along the scar. I started taking antibiotics last night but by this morning its all swollen and red. Dr said surgery this weekend to try and save the prosthesis. He said there's a high percentage that it will have to be removed like before. Living with no knee for two months and on IVs twice a day is not my idea of fun. High percentage of loosing my leg. I was warned after the last episode that if I got another infection in my knee I would loose it.
Good luck. Our prayers are with you1
I'm worrying about my 29 year old daughter. She has surgery Tuesday for melanoma. This time it's on her back, 4 years ago it was on her jaw...
Blondes and Arizona sun seem incompatible.. I'm glad she got hooked up with the VA (Navy vet)... they spotted it on a physical because of her prior.. hope it hasn't spread..
Not meant to hi jack or side track..just... medical issues suck..
Hope it goes well for you....l
And I hope all turns out well for your daughter, BlueDog.
My father in law got basically the same news 6 years ago, he hasn't replaced the knee prosthesis, nor did he opt for the amputation they suggested. He was told he'd probably die of the infection in a year or two and since he was 85 years old he figured, "well, that's that then." This was summer 2008 and he's been on antibiotics and pain meds since then. Still going strong, works 5-6 hours a day around the house and yard.
2 summers ago my favorite sister in law spent the 3 months in intensive care because of a staph infection in her right knee... countless times they thought she was lost...
She's up and around now but she was always "go go go"..not now. Walking though cane most of the time.. Antibiotics and other stuff and therapy is daily. They talk of knee replacement.
Optimistic they'll be able to get all the melanoma on my daughter and it hasn't spread.. She's being close to the vest but I think positive on it.. All one can do..
Thanks..
Sorry to hear this news; prayers and best wishes for a full recovery. Please keep us posted.
Dan,
You and your daughter will also be in my thoughts and prayers. Nothing tugs at your heart like the struggles of your children. You have no idea you can love that much until you become a parent.
As with DL, please keep us posted.
Blue, that's a tough one for sure. I know some of what waiting for the other shoe to drop is like. Hope all goes well for her.
Thoughts and prayer to both.
I wish you the best!
Bluedog, this much of this old saying I know is true, since I have three daughters,
"Your Son is your Son, until he takes a wife, but your Daughter is you Daughter, for the rest of your life."
My granddaughter said prayers in Latin for you both this morning. She spent the night with me and the Missus.
Sometimes all we can offer are prayers, but we have too often seen the positives from our little virtual family's prayers.
DL/Dan...more prayers from MI.
I still remember all the support that I got when our home burned down. It still means much.
Clear you're some strong stock handling your days..
My daughter is strong too and this may very well go smooth. It did 4 years ago on her jaw. I'm glad she hooked up with VA..they found the new spot and isn't gonna be 6k or better in expenses this time around.
She did a single hitch in navy bout 10 years ago.. stationed in new orleans for crying out loud..great duty for a party lover.. ;)
No matter how it goes she'll be strong and fine. I can see you're the same...
I'll check PM.. thanks again..(have to wait til I go out to shop tomorrow to check PM.. I see I posted capital letter "BlueDog".. means I was on my Chrome book out in shop.. different log in.. same guy) ;)
Hang tough...
BlueDog, I'll keep your daughter in my prayers as well, sounds like she's in good hands. Not much can bring us to our knees faster than tough times our kids face.
These sorts of trials really test a person. We learn a lot about who we are, how strong we are, who our friends are, and how strongly we believe. The things we learn aren't always easy to accept, but they are the truest test I know.
One day at a time, If that's too tough: one hour at a time, and if necessary, one minute at a time.
This is giving me the hebejebes! I am set to have my right knee replaced the end of January. Saw a guy who I haven't seen for awhile at church Sunday on crutches and could barely bend his knee. Come to find out he had a simple arthroscopic done this summer and developed a staff infection that spread, spent 12 weeks in the hospital, a couple organs almost shut down.
Will be praying our heads off it all works out well and you make a full recovery man.... I have back issues but looking at what your going through it pales in comparison I guess.
Been having weird knee pains for about a year and am afraid to tell the doc after seeing this thread.
Praying that all goes well for you, I admire your courage and positive attitude. Bummer you had to miss the elk hunt.
Rory,
The same for you......your determination and sense of humor has served you well. If I see a guy with his pants down on my caribou hunt next year, I will recognize you right away.
I am having my right knee replaced December 16. Hopefully my body has proven tolerant of prosthetics, I have had both shoulders replaced in the last 24 months. That has been a great experience, in fact I am ready to head for the tree stand now with the 52# compound bow. I could easily draw more but am very content with that weight.
Glad to end my hitch hike on your thread DL... ;)
From another double knee vet...
Greg
Now, let's get some good news from DL.
