The Republican Party's 2012 nominee plans to tell supporters about his plans to pass on another national campaign during a conference call. He first let his staff know in a separate call that he was out of the race.
"After putting considerable thought into making another run for president, I've decided it is best to give other leaders in the party the opportunity to become our next nominee," Romney said in a statement, which he planned to read to supporters on the call."
One less distraction for conservatives!
They may have recognized that splitting the "I'm almost a democrat, really!" money and votes was going to blow up their chance of getting an establishment guy through the primary. In that sense, it isn't such a good thing.
"In his call with supporters, Romney appeared to take a swipe at Bush, saying it was time for fresh leadership within the GOP.
"I believe that one of our next generation of Republican leaders, one who may not be as well-known as I am today, one who has not yet taken their message across the country, one who is just getting started, may well emerge as being better able to defeat the Democrat nominee," Romney said. "In fact, I expect and hope that to be the case."
If Christie, Bush, Romney, Perry and Rubio ran, the GOP could really screw up and nominate Cruz or Paul. Huckabee is enough of a charlatan to skim down the religious right, so best if he stays.
Romney out leaves more room for someone else to step up. But it doesn't necessarily make them any better or more likely to beat Hillary. Be careful what you wish for....
God bless, Steve
Bush will not be the nominee. He may run, but he won't get far.
But Romney bailing out will certainly help Bush in the short term, and that is not necessarily a good thing.
We're free to support other folks.
YES YES YES!!! I've always said that spouting ideas is great, espeically ideas that one agrees with. But ultimately we are elected a chief EXECUTIVE, as in "a person who has to RUN THINGS". You DON'T get that kind of qualification by being a Senator or Representative unless you were in the private sector as a CEO or high ranking military command status.
IMO governors generally come to the table with at the minimum previous job experience for what is required to be the POTUS.
Making a person who's sole experience is that of a legislator, even if they have great ideas/philosophies, is akin to hiring a coach for an NFL team who's never actually played the game and who's "qualification" is that they were a big fan of the team!
Needs to be Walker, Ryan, Jindal, and/or Palin-vp.
Nominating another Bush is worse than Romney.. It is a sure fire way of loosing the election hands down. IMO anyone could be a Bush in the general and do so with ease.
After 8 years of its Bush's fault how do we think it will go over to have another Bush as a nominee? It will go over like a whore in church is how
Bush will not be the nominee. Christy should not be. Huckabee... I don't know WHAT he is thinking.
It seems to me Romney was throwing his weight behind one of the "newer, younger" candidates.... a strong conservative he noted, is what was needed. Doesn't sound like he is backing Bush at all, almost a backhand really. I don't think you could call Christy a strong conservative. Plus I don't think Christy's personality lends itself to getting in line to support him.
It would be silly for Romney to burn bridges and get behind any candidate right now. It would serve him no purpose at this point. But I'm sure he will later at some point. I don't think he's eying the VP at all, no interest in that. But secretary of something could be in the cards if he plays them right.....
I'd suspect Romney will only support Bush if Bush is the nominee, which I think is very unlikely.
Bush is a former pot head who sold hash to buddies, supports amnesty, and common core. No way he should get nominated.

And he WON. In a BLUE state, with big labor reinforcements sent in from Illinois to boot!
