What's your favorite group to listen to on long drives?
My favorite group, hands down, is The Eagles. There's just something about their rhythm, their beat and the relaxing, upbeat sound that nothing else can compare to when you're on the road.
I love the Eagles. BTW Hotel California had my favorite female at the time, Linda Ronstadt on it. She sure turned liberal but was one of the best singers ever and the Eagles loved her.
Hands up ZZ Top. then the music to Dirty Dancing, Then Eagles, Then CCR. Then the Boxtops. None of them second place. Watch out when you are driving to ZZ top though. Especially if you are on a mountain road with a Porsche underneath ya. God bless, Steve
My list of road trip music would go on forever and be all over the board, so I thought for a moment about the best road trip album or CD from one group. Hell Freezes Over is pretty good, but I think Waiting For Columbus, the live Little Feat show has to be one of the best road trip albums.
When I listen to MoTown I wonder what in the world happened to black music to get us to where they are today. Its like they got in reverse or something and hit the gas instead of the brakes. My wife and I stayed up last night and wathched a movie about the Temptations and wow, the harmonics and music that Smokey wrote and that those MoTown groups sang was wonderful. Gordy Barry had it going on now. NOw its like the worst of Black Culture has taken over.
A buddy of mine is a fellow audio file. He got busted for speeding on I64 returning home from JMU. The song he was playing? "Radar Love" . I think about that every time I pass where he got pulled over (Afton Mountain) and laugh my butt off. Road music can be detrimental to your insurance premium.
- Anything Allman, Skynyrd, Johnny Cash, BB King, Korn, Metallica, Megadeth, Gillian Welch, White Stripes, SRV, GNR, Joe Bonamassa, Johnny Cash Reads The New Testament, Derek Trucks, Santana, Radiohead, CCR, Howlin Wolf. My son, MY SON!, reintroduced the Beatles to me. I could go on. The road and music are like peas and carrots. Just don't play "Radar Love" without cruise control. lol
Soooo...me and my old bud Big Rog are taking a moderate road trip from Tucson to that space alien place in new Mexico to see an old friend of his. Two lane road all the way style..
I'm playing a road mix...Dylan, Cash, Williams, Shaver, Yoakam, Hiatt, Cooder, Zevon, Ronstad, Earl, Robbins, early Stones, Hooker,...etc.
About half way there he asks me to pull over at next town that has a pawn shop or gun store.
I ask him why and he says..".. it's your damn music.I'm so damn depressed.. I have to buy a gun so I can fkng kill myself.."
Dan - If he could've been depressed listening to John Lee Hooker Free Beer and Chicken or Hooker 'N Heat when John Lee played with Canned Heat, well...maybe not shoot him, but at least hit him with a rock and disparage his ancestors.
Rick...one of my favorite Hooker is him and Morrison teaming up on "Road House Blues"..
ahh..over the years I've disparaged his ancestors, likely hit him with a rock and I've tried to kill him in at least a half dozen car wrecks... he's the guy wants me to do the haul road hunt... ;)
No playlist would be complete without REO Speedwagons " Roll With The Changes". Takes me back to the late 70's cruising in a CJ5 top off, fishing rods, cooler of beer, and good friends.
I'm a ZZ Top, Cult, Deep Purple, Seger, some Metallica, Bramlet, all kind of Outlaw Country with some of the George Strait stuff and before thrown in for good measure.
Never much listened to Nickleback, but this rendition of ZZ's Sharp Dressed Man is pretty damn good.
Gretchen Wilson and Alice in Chains does a pretty gnarly version of Hearts Barracuda. The Heart can do Led Zeppelin stuff pretty good.
I like all kinds. Not into the Bro-country or death metal or rap, but have some Mozart, Brahms, Jim Brickman and other stuff like that when the mood hits me.
If it's a short trip you could listen to the full version of Alice's Restaurant. Arlo can go on that one song for over a half hour. Then I don't want a pickle. I like his guitar pickin'. I was a fan of his daddy, Woody, too.
Don't forget these in case of emergency. Sometimes pulling when you're drowsey just isn't safe or a possibility. I've had problems being drowsey but can't sleep when I pull over. One hit if this and I'm good for several hours. Loud rousing music Sunflower seeds And these as a last resort.
Since many of you guys are more into country than me, I thought I'd ask you to add some more of your country favorites to this thread so that I can check them out. Here are a couple that have some "country flavor" that I think are good driving tunes.
Gordon Lightfoot, Mac Wiseman, Gary Stewart, Moe Bandy, Merle Haggard, The Hollies, The Animals, (some) Neil Diamond. Hell, anything but Rap, Hip Hop, "New" country, or Pop! As long as it's old I'll listen to it. You can even throw in Dean Martin if you want to.
Met the guys early one morning in little hole in the wall bar, after a concert one night, in the early 80's.
Cronin bought me a couple beers and we shot the shat. Cool guy.
Alan Gratzer was one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Had some really interesting stories of the band, the music, etc......was a pleasure to talk with.
Richrath was kinda standoff'ish. But the boy could shred on the guitar.
Speaking of which, have you seen Gary lately?
Dayyyyyuuummmmmmmmm! They boy looks like he's taken to eating French fried elephant sammiches lathered with a jar of Hellman's mayo. lol ;-)
Fun stuff. I don't know them at all. Keep 'em coming if you don't mind.
I'll trade you some blues. Cedell Davis, an old Delta Blues musician was afflicted with polio as a child which crippled his hands. He refused to give up the guitar. Because he lost almost all use of his right hand, he flipped the guitar over strummed with his left hand and used one of his mother's butter knives to develop a slide type style.
In spite of everything stacked against him, he has continued to entertain people for more than seventy years.
