This tragedy was due to stupidity and ignorance...plain and simple!
Don't get me wrong. It's sad and tragic for all involved, but those involved should not have been handling firearms of any kind!
It crap like this that makes us all look bad.

Dumb mistake. If they had a sling on the rifle she could have gone up the ladder with it slung behind her back. Or she could have pulled it up, unloaded, with a rope.
