Years ago there was a lady around here who let someone cut stave bolts off her land only after they promised her that the white oak staves they got from her would only be used for vinegar.
A hardware store I worked at one time used to sell used barrels and half barrels. Seems some of the yard staff figured out they could add a little water to the whole barrels, let it sit in the sun for a spell and drain off some pretty good stuff. Some of them got to sampling a little too much during working hours. Now they only sell half barrels. ;)

Went to a scotch distillery in Scotland for a tour last summer. They age the scotch in whiskey barrels imported from the States. US whiskey barrels can only be used once, so the Scotts get them, they have no compunction about using a barrel more than once. Saw a few JD barrels in the warehouse.
