I thought it interesting that he blamed the press and praised the police. Considering how closely he matched the description, it could have gone very badly. The officers did well, but could have easily made a simple but terrible mistake.

I think one of the keys is when he realized that the cops were there and addressing him, he cooperated and acted in a non-threatening or non-belligerent way until the situation was resolved. The officers did their job but also were non-threatening or non-belligerent in their actions when he begin cooperating. Everyone was calm and professional.

The scary part was that he was listening to music and failed to comply at first - making some potentially threatening moves (edited to add - for the simple reason that he did not hear them and did not know that they were there). Fortunately they were alert enough to see the problem.

He acted appropriately and there would be more blacks alive today if they followed his lead. Like Chris Rock said in how to not get your ass kicked by a cop.
