From the article: "The release states that until the species of snake is determined, “we caution people who recreate along the Presumpscot River to remain alert, maintain a safe distance from any wildlife, and report any sightings of the snake to the Westbrook Police Department.”

Are snakes that uncommon in Maine? I also found it interesting that they do not know what kind of snake it is but that it is not native to the area.

Looks like someone lost their Burmese or reticulated Python. Or let it go.

The snake is a lot bigger than that now. They increase in size every time they shed their skin. I would think cold weather would kill the snake but Maine has lot of rocky places for the snake to hibernate. Our black snakes just get under a pile of leaves and make it through the winter. If that big Maine snake ate a beaver it won't have to eat for months.

Very odd location for a snake to shed, and especially have it come off in such large pieces.

Could be more than meets the eye here. My guess? Someone got a couple of sheds from a large python and spread them on the trail, just to see what kind of hoopla it would bring.

It's how legends get started.. photo spider-0173.gif

Think the river name might be the first clue in solving the mystery.

I have hunted along the banks of the Penobscot river. Didn't know about the river the where snake skin was found.

We had a resident crypto zoologist - just say bigfoot three times and he will appear.
