One of the museums that got his contact information was the National Museum of the Pacific War. After donating multiple times, he somehow was convinced that they were having their grand opening on May 28, 2012 and could not be told otherwise.
Since it was not safe for him to drive that far (though he insisted he would if we did not take him) my wife and I took mom and dad to TX for the event. It was a 32 hour round trip - no Interstate miles and occurred at a time that was less than convenient.
I really didn't look forward to it, but I am sure they did a lot for me through the years that they really didn't look forward to.
The place has actually been open since the 1950's and the last grand opening was 3 years before we were there. The museum was interesting.
However, they did have a very nice Memorial Day service and recognized all WWII veterans who were in attendance.
It was definitely worth the four days invested. Dad passed just a year later. Most of his life he avoided all efforts to recognize or honor him for his service, his farming operation, or just the little things he quietly did for family, neighbors, or strangers.
For once in his life dad was willing to be recognized and honored for his service, and I had the privilege to be there as a witness.
