So my lovely wife was once just a teenager, and when she was such lived in Germany for a period of a couple years. She went there as a foreign exchange student and stayed a while longer with her host family. The girl she lived with then came and stayed with her family in Wisconsin for a year. anyway, fast forward 20 years down the road they still talk often, weekly at least.

As it turns out next month my wifes German friend is going to be in San Francisco. Her husband is going to be there for some work training and we have decided to meet up with them for a week after his training is up.

I am wanting to rent a house or apartment through airbnb or vrbo as ive had great luck through these sites and it would be nice if we could all stay together.

I have a couple questions-

The san simeon fire- how bad was it? I loved that area when I was out there in 05 but its far enough away I don't want to waste a day driving down there if we don't need to.

We are looking at a couple places in the mission district- am I going to get shanked there or is it a nice neighborhood?

ive never been there in October- is there going to be anything going on from 10/21-25?

thanks

michael

Mike, my wife and I are actually meeting some friends there in the Napa Valley area in the same time frame. We are going the hotel route in a community called American Canyon. Hotel prices are hideous all around there. Wife wants to go on a nice wine tour for her b-day. I am thinking the airbnb thing would be the way to go though , especially if you can split the cost and are staying for nearly a week or more.

The bay area in the fall is pretty nice once you get away from the major metro area. The wharf is always fun. Getting across the two big bridges is rough unless you hit them right.

Have fun. Hit some wineries. California is at once the most beautiful and geologically diverse state in the union, yet the most politically handicapped entity. We always have fun there though.

The weather in the fall is usually outstanding. I would not want my family anywhere the Mission district (especially after dark) unless it's on the outskirts.

Jeff-

I booked one just now near castro/haight.

Jim- the price was $225 per night for a 2 bedroom home. There were some taxes, cleaning fee, and service fee for using vrbo and in the end it comes out to about 275 per night with all the taxes and fees- but its 2 bedrooms with parking for the rental car.

we could've maybe found a budget hotel on the cheap but no cooking. Id rather be able to eat breakfast at the house, then head out for the day, and grab a snack for lunch and eat a decent dinner out.

We stayed in the same type of deal in gulf shores Alabama for spring break and it really had me interested in buying a unit just for a rental investment property. The property managers gouge the owners like crazy on fees there though.

wife and I are flying in a day earl, getting the car and heading down to gorda area. ive stayed at the whale watchers inn a few times and loved it- shes never been so I thought id bring her. There is also a sweet little place to eat down in avila beach on the end of pier 3 I want to take her, then head back up to SF to meet up with her friends.

its been an insane summer for me work wise- im looking forward to a few day get away. Have the mother in law staying at my place taking care of the house, dog, and kids and its the first time the wife and I have gotten away for more than 1 night alone without the kids in over 6 years!

My only advice is to remember what Confucius say...........Condoms should be used on every conceivable occasion.

Take a 12 pack.

Poppers at

Cadillac Bar & Grill 44 9th Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 (415) 554-0181.

I am happy to see they opened back up, unfortunately my favorite, Tommy Toys is in the dust bin of history.
