Keep your guns handy!

A few days ago I was woken up at midnight to knocking at my door so I grabbed my gun and went to the door. A guy was there saying he needed help. I kept my gun hidden at my side and I said what's up. He proceeds to tell me his girlfriend was in labor at a hospital and could I take him there. I said hell no. He then said can I use your phone. I said dude I ain't opening this door. I said I'd be happy to call u a cab. He then got frustrated and ran off. My wife had already dialed 911 when He knocked so 2 minutes later the first cop showed up and I said he went that way. Then 4 more show up from two towns and their running through the yard and spot lighting the woods along the street. They catch him running in the woods. From what I was told he was breaking in cars in the next town and he was trying to use me to get him far away as they were already looking for him. Although I did not use my gun I felt safer and it goes to show you these heroin addicts are everywhere. I live in a quiet no crime town and it was the first situation where I ever felt I needed a gun on me. Probably won't be the last. Keep a gun handy at night!
Great result, Spike. Nice job handling that, and keeping the problem from getting worse.
Good move Spike. I never answer the door without a handgun and have a rifle, loaded right along side the door. Heck, I watch TV with a handgun right here.
Well done!
People showing up at your door with a story like that is a classic example of how crooks get in your home, then rob you or worse.
Nice job!
Good job only thing I would add is a dog (preferably big) by your side. But hard to top S&W lol.
I too live in the country and I only worry when I go out of town on a hunt and leave my family.
I have a wife and two boys 7 &15, finally convinced the wife to get her CC which forced her to get very familiar with her gun.
Also got very family oriented large dog Rhodesian Ridgeback, he is extremely protective. I at least feel a little better when I'm away.
Thanks guys. I thought it was gonna get crazy because he was persistent but I stayed calm and was contemplating my next move as I was talking to him. I was shaking a bit and it was Erie in the dark and quiet night. Next time I may have the AR ready instead ha! My liberal wife even said after that she needs her own gun lol. I will have my dog next week but I think it may just lick an intruder to death but at least it will bark!
Well handled Spike. Don't underestimate the protective nature of a well trained Hunting Dog. When he's grown your Griff will have a big dog bark, and believe me he'll know that you're the one who puts him on birds, and he'll want to take care of the family. He doesn't need to be aggressive, he just needs to bark when there is something unusual going on outside. That will wake you up, (or alert) you before the threat has a chance to get inside. You can take it from there.
My GWP would tear the shot out of an intruder. Your griff will likely be somewhat protective too.
I think you did a fine job on that one. Story was a bit far-fetched.
Sometimes people do need help though. When I was young I remember one late night where some people drove through a barrier closing a bridge and into a creek. They did indeed need help, and my parents obliged. Judge every situation individually, but of course be cautious.
A round in the chamber reminder is good, but it also reaffirms the advantages of a revolver, always ready.
Spike, I think you may be surprised at how protective the griffs and most wire-hairs are. It is part of their breeding. I have a 110lb American bulldog that people are terrified of, but it's the Griff that would rip someone apart.
Scar.
The cops told me they found a cellphone the next town over so maybe he couldn't call his get away. It would be great to have a sweet hunting dog that would rip an intruder to shreds lol. And yes I double checked to see if I had a round in the chamber. Good thing for commie laws here as All I have to do is look on top of the Chamber for the loaded chamber indicator lol. Actually came in handy! One liberal law that actually helps out. I'm going to order the magnetic holder from N82 to screw to the bed frame. Neat little invention there.
Not exactly your typical fierce watchdog, but she gets the job done!

I agree on the dog thing.
We've got a Golden Retriever and she's the gentlest, most loving dog you could ever want. But she knows when something's not right.
She sleeps in our bedroom and a couple of years ago she woke us up by barking. I turned on the light and she was standing by the door that goes out to our back patio and growling.
I grabbed my pistol, opened the door and saw two guys with flashlights walking in the open space behind the back fence. I hollered, "What's going on out there?" They said they were with the Sheriff's department and some kid in an orange sweatshirt was going around the neighborhood ringing doorbells, then running off. So I went to the front door to see if I could see anything. What I saw was a patrol car going very slowly down our street with its lights off.
On a couple of other occasions, the dog has woken us up by growling near the patio door. I've not seen anything, but my guess is she'd smelled a bear or a coyote.
Having her warn us whenever she senses something's not right in the middle of the night is very comforting, because it gives me time to respond and prepare.
My wife has a loaded .38 revolver in the drawer of her bed stand and I keep a loaded .40 cal. semi-auto in mine.
You protected your castle, bro! Good man. What would Josh & The Mike.V do? Mad Dog
We have a cat that jumps up and runs to the window or the front door and growls if she hears anything. I never go to the door without my pistol. We several loaded pistols in different locations around our house. My wife knows how to use all of them too.
We have had trucks broken into on our block and one neighbor had his car stolen out of his garage when the door was open in broad daylight. My truck that is outside has a Viper alarm and I have taken the cord off of my garage door and secured the pull down lever. I have security lights all around my house that light up whenever anything enters my lawn space. Hopefully, I won't need all this but you never can tell.
Because we live on a court, no one 'accidentally' drives on the court. Other than FedEx and UPS, pretty much no one drives on the court unless they live here. There are only nine homes and several of us have offices that look onto the street. I'm one of those.
So when I see a vehicle come by that I can't identify, my 'alert' button flashes and I pay special attention.
We have zero crime in my neighborhood and a large part of that is because my neighbors will defend and protect my property and my neighbor's property as I will defend and protect theirs.
My guns are always handy.
Guns prevent crime and murder of innocent people. Buy them, become proficient with them, and don't be afraid to use them if you have too. God Bless
Years ago when we actually made good money, we used to book a couple of tables for the local Friends Of NRA dinners. Being the table sponsor I'd get a $100 or so worth of free raffle tickets for the gun table. I won a Henry Golden Spike lever .22 rifle (which I've never shot and keep it in the box in the safe, and a Baikal 12 gauge double coach gun with the shortest legal barrels available. I put a 5 shell holder on the stock and filled it with 00 Buckshot. THAT'S the gun that's next to the bed. Lotsa' "pucker factor" even if you miss! The flames come out about 5' from the end of the barrels when you shoot it in the dark.
I've been handling shotguns since I was 13, and have killed most of the game I've hunted with one and I feel the most comfortable with.
Do any of you have some goodies on your home guns? Flashlight, night sight, laser? Was thinking of getting something as my Ruger SR9C is plain Jane. What are your home defense guns?
My wife has a fully loaded Ruger .38 caliber revolver in her nightstand that she can shoot the lights out with.
I have a Springfield .40 caliber HD in my nightstand, fully loaded and a spare magazine next to it. In my office I have a Kimber .45 Caliber ACP, also fully loaded with two extra magazines ready to go.
Damn Nva, you better hope you don't get burglarized and lose all those guns. I think if I magnetically mount the gun to the bed frame and keep the sheets over it then it will stay concealed.
spike78.
If someone breaks into my home, it won't be me who loses.

Check the conceal furniture out. Badass
My kids are gone. Just me and the Mrs.'s. So, ...... In the living room, 2-38 special revolvers set loaded on the ottoman for easy reach in the evening when we settle down for the night. A 357 magnum revolver sets on top of the fridge so when we cook in the evenings, we are protected if someone barges in. A 12 gauge pump loaded with double ought buck stays propped up against the head board on the bed on one side. An AR loaded with a 30 round clip stays propped up against the head board on the other side. I carry a Ruger SR9E or, a snub nosed 357 MAG revolver as my CC gun everyday. I usually lay them on the night stand every night when I take my belt off to put my pants in the hamper. I keep a 45 acp and a 44 magnum revolver loaded in the safe. I keep every gun in the safe loaded. In other words, there is a gun close at all times if need be. I live in a decent place but, I live in the Oxycontin headquarters of the world. So, theft is a big problem in this area. And, junkies do bad things when they need a fix. I pray I never have to use them.
I had a buddy ask me one time what I was afraid of as i was showing him one of my AR's. It was perfect as he asked as I was installing the magazine and, jerked back on the slide of the AR, slamming a round home. I stone cold looked into his eyes and said, "Nothing.".
I'm not that guy that sets around and hope's for a chance to use these things on another human. But, I'm also not that guy that intends to beg for my life if some piece of trash decides he is going to try and take our stuff. My wife works in a prison also. She is constantly being threatened. So, we figured we'd be proactive about our safety versus wishing later we had taken that responsibility more seriously. And, we have a BIG dog to top it off. He's friendly even to strangers but, at night he does bark at things outside. Albeit a tail wagging bark if it is a person is out there but, we are warned. God Bless men
All I expect of my dog is to wake me up. I'll do the rest.
Years ago I had two setters. One would bark...a scared bark...at damn near anything. The other wasn't afraid of much of anything. When she heard something she didn't like she'd just stare at the door or window/wall where she'd heard the sound come from and make this low tone guttural growl that even scared ME. When she did that I went RIGHT for my gun without a thought because there WAS something out there. Not necessarily a person, but it sure as hell was something. She was by far the best bird dog I've ever had also. She died 31 years ago and I STILL miss her!
I carry, and the wife carries, we keep a loaded riot shotgun by the bed, Double OO Buck then slug every other shot. I keep a 357 Mag on the dresser by my nights and my 40 Cal. on mine. the touse is alarmed and we have the three dogs, all barkers, two biters. Every weapon in my safe is loaded, except my double guns, It's really bad for them to be left cocked.
If you carry or keep a weapon handy, you need to go do some defensive shooting classes. One here locally even does night shoots were you can only use a flash light in a dark setting. I guarantee that you will learn a ton! In fact it will probably scare you a little how little you know about defensive night shooting ! Just Standing there sending lead down range doesn't cut it. The truth is, You Will Fight The Way You Train, it's a proven fact! Be Safe, Be Informed and Be Ready!
God Bless,
Scar.
Even a lab will be protective! Had a male black lab years ago. This lab was a gentle as they come. We had him for a couple of years and one day my wife wanted to see how he would react if someone attacked her. The lab had not been around her brother very much so she had her brother grab her. She screamed like she was being hurt. The lab come running and shoved his way in between the two of them all the while looking up at her brother showing his teeth and giving him a low growl.
I have motion detectors all around my house and two monitors inside. I have one right in the bedroom. If it says alert zone 2 something is coming in my driveway. Alert zone 4 is all the way up my driveway. Zone 1 is someone at the door. Deer set off zone 2 and 4 but a glance in the video monitor shows me what it out there. The motion detectors are wireless and will work well for at least 1/4 mile. When my mom passed away I put one on her house which was 1/4 mile away through the woods. It worked very well. I also used trail cameras and got pictures of vehicles, deer, dogs, bicycles, people and every thing that came up her driveway.
Damn. You guys have fortresses. I got to step it up!
Well done, everyone!
Well, everyone except Sybil, that is.
I'm sure his home defense strategy is to hide under the bed while wetting his panties and praying the police show up before the intruder finds him.
Refuse to be a victim!
If you use trail cams get the ones with black light. No flash to alert someone their picture has been taken. All the cams I have bought in the last couple of years have no visible flash and work very well in complete darkness.
classes are good, but you have to practice so it's automatic or the training is mostly useless.
You need to shoot a hundred rounds of something every week.
