Experts warn 800 species, many endangered, affected by border wall

. . .

. . .

MEXICO CITY – A study by Mexico’s top university has revealed that at least 800 species of wildlife will be adversely affected by President Trump’s planned 2,000-mile border wall with Mexico.

“The U.S.-Mexico border is made up of mountains, jungle, coastline and many other diverse ecosystems,” Professor Gerardo Ceballos, who led the investigation published last week, told Fox News. “Wildlife has populated these regions for millions of years, and has always had freedom of movement to hunt, reproduce and migrate. To make these animals suffer as a result of man’s political agenda is entirely immoral.”

Of the 800 species that will be affected by President Trump’s border wall, 140 are in danger of extinction, including the bald eagle, grey wolf, armadillo and jaguar, a big cat of which remain only 10 in the highlands of the Sonora Desert that straddle Arizona. Those animals whose range will be halved by the border wall’s construction will be impeded in their ability to reproduce with other members of their species, thereby creating a shallower gene pool and heightening the chance of inbreeding.

“It goes against the very principles of evolution that has created these amazing natural environments,” said Professor Ceballos, who has spent the last six months traveling the length of the border, from Tijuana to Texas.

“If the wall is being built to prevent illegal immigration from Mexico into the U.S., then there are more effective and less harmful ways of achieving this goal,” he said.

Research published by ecologists from the Mexican National Autonomous University has shown that an impassable physical barrier placed into ecosystems inhabited by jaguars, black bears and bighorn sheep will so disrupt patterns of migration as to cause a “natural catastrophe.”

A truley impassable wall could very well be harmful to some species. Of course the wall, if built, isn't just a one solid wall for thousands of miles and there will be many parts that will have no such physical wall anytime in the forseeable future or existing plans. Having a hard time with bald eagles and armadillos being on that list of species that face extinction due to more wall going up. Environmental impacts certainly need to be part of the design and construction.

If some species suffer, that will be another tragic outcome of illegal immigration.

I question Professor Ceballos' academic prowess.

I would like to know where those border jungles are. Certainly not along the New Mexico state line...

Some one tell the professor that our eagles can fly over any wall. Armadillos are just possums on the half shell and will be around forever. If he is worried about the gene pool he should worry about Muslims. They have been inbreeding for 1400 years. 70% are inbred because it is against their religion to marry outside of their faith and they marry first cousins to keep keep what wealth they have in the family.

There would be environmental impacts, as there are with uncontrolled illegal immigration.

I really dont care......... BUILD THE WALL

"So......Im confused here. Is this extinction possibility AOK with the "Wallies"?? There were good points in the story, hopefully it gains global attention. " Yes you are confused, very confused, the Bald Eagle is not even on the threatened list.

If the wall can stop the Mexican fever tick then it should have already been built.

He's not only confused, but he's also a wimp that won't back up his bullshit....because he can't.

Arizona’s Game and Fish Department states that “habitat essential to the conservation of the jaguar does not exist in either Arizona or New Mexico under any scientifically credible definition of that term.”

Ok then we can forget the wall and build shooting houses. Two man teams on 4 hour shifts with weapon of their choice. Simple engagement rules. If it walks on two legs shoot it. I'm kinda joking but not really.

Oh just mine the SOB and be done with it. Cheaper, easier and WAAAAAY more effective!

" To make these animals suffer as a result of man’s political agenda is entirely immoral"

and how many birds, especially eagles are killed by windmills?

How many PEOPLE have to die because the Mexican gov't is corrupt up to its sombreros with cartel drug money and will do nothing to enforce drug or people trafficking.

Can he please explain why Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi was allowed to suffer in a Mexican prison for over 200 days?

Just think of it as a high fence game preserve

In what universe are armadillos endangered? We have them in Missouri now for crying out loud. They're a nuisance invasive species.

And the eagles? Really?!?!?!!?

No credibility can be given when they say an armadillo is endangered

Heck, we now have armadillos in Southern Illinois for cryin out loud!! And bald eagles too for that matter.

Just proves, you can't fix stupid!!

There are armadillos that are threatened but not by this wall. They weigh 60 - 70 pounds and live in South America. Locals eat them and deforestation and development have effected some habitat.

we could replace the wall idea with machine gun towers every hundred yards with shoot to kill orders. if its good enough for area 51 where they will shoot US citizens or trespassing then its good enough for the border.

What a bunch of BS. I would build 2 high fence walls about 50 ft a part. Then install auto-senser machine guns every 100 yds. Anything that goes between the 2 fences is shot. Crews come along once a day and clean up. Cheaper and puts US citizens to work.

Maybe they can just ask the Chinese how that great wall worked out for them.

X2 spike. Make so that if they are illegal they cannot:

1. Get a bank account/drivers license/etc..

2. Wire money.

3. Rent an apartment.....or ANYTHING.

4. Receive ANY kind of government benefit.

5. Fly

6. Have their kids in public..or any kind of school.

7. If they have to go to court (or any kind of government agency) ALL communication (written, oral, smoke signals, etc.) will be in english and english only. If they need a translator THEY will pay for it.

8. While we will not go knocking on doors, if they are stopped by an LEO for any reason and if they cannot show legal documentation then they will be deported post haste.

If we did this then we wouldn't need a wall as they will deport themselves. Make it impossible for them to exist here illegally. If you think about it, doing anything LESS than the above is basically telling them....."Well yeah, technically you're not supposed to be here, but you can stay anyway." (Wink wink, nudge nudge...)

And they will/are. They aren't stupid.

You know, make it like they were legal Americans who owe money to the IRS and have their bank accounts/Social Security/Medicare/property grabbed. Let's all be equal!
