NOTE!!!! Their is only natural lighting in 'the slot.' There is no artificial lighting and no colored lighting in 'The Slot.' That makes these photos even more astounding. There is only sunlight filtering in from above and natural refraction and shadowing off the rocks create the amazing colors
On the way from Zion to the Grand Canyon, we stopped to see the Navajo Slot. This place is near the Glen Canyon dam right across the Arizona border. My bride learned of 'The Slot' while planning the trip. Neither of us had previously known or heard of it.
The 'slot' is actually a tiny cut through the rocks. It's only about 1/4 mile long and it's VERY narrow. In some places it's less than five feet wide and it's rarely wider than fifteen feet. It's subject to monstrous flash floods, which have rendered the rock very smooth.
This place is nothing like you've ever seen and it's definitely worth your time if you're in the area. The lighting in the slot can't be described. You simply have to see it to believe it.
Here are a few photos my wife took when we were there.
now my wife has it on our list of things to see
My suggestion is that you visit the desert SW before Mid-May or after mid-October. I say that for two reasons:
1. Weather, esp. the heat. To see all the places properly requires a fair amount of hiking.
2. Crowds! Even though we did the trip the second week of May, some of the parking lots were full or near full and the shuttle busses (Zion and the Grand Canyon) were frequently packed, even with standing room only
