Hello gentlemen, I am needing assistance or if someone knows how to convert military map grids into longitude /latitude. I will give example of what I am trying to do. I am searching for an area in Vietnam that a battle took place in 1967. I have been sent a tiny map with a grid co-ordinates XT385608.I would like to see if anyone can convert that into longitude and latitude so I can google and find this area of where the battle took place where I lost my brother. I appreciate if anyone could help or give me a contact of someone who could help me. Thank you for taking time to read this Pappy

This may be exactly what you are looking for!
It appears that the full address may be 12txt385608
when I finally learned to input map grid locations into my GPS and transpose between L&L, UTM and MGRS my whole world changed in wilderness type hunting. It would probably take me an hour or so to remember everything that's for sure......it's been a while since I hunted a new unit. :-) You should be able to get that coordinate into a format your GPS will understand it will get within feet of that spot.
Since you do not have the complete location information, if you have some general idea of where it was, it would help narrow down the spot.
These are the coordinates for the center of that last photo. 10.994505,106.266826

If you go to the link I provided, go to Vietnam, keep zooming until you find the spot you want, then choose menu from the top right and the last line in the list of choices allows you to choose the type of coordinate display you want. The one you gave us is in MGRS. You can tell it to display in lat long in several formats or UTM, or MGRS.
Just to the right of the Menu tab is a tab that lets you choose your map display type. TOPO World OSM Cycle apparently gives the best map.
I am slowly learning about this as I go. This may be the correct coordinates. 11.493005,106.269862
Nice work Henry! ....
Pappy....stuff you may already know. The area east from Tay Ninh to Ben Cat and up to An Loc/Loc Ninh, and back over to Tay Ninh on the west. (See Henry's last map) was what we called the "Iron Triangle" ..Very hot area and a Viet Cong stronghold. It was a total Free Fire zone during the time I flew in the delta. (That'd be May 67 to end of January 68 when I was detached up to Hue Phu Bai in I Corp.) (I was an Army Huey crew chief)
My condolences for your Brother. May he rest in peace.
That was 25th division area of operation. You might check for a 25th division web site and post a question there and get some answers.

Pappy...look at the last map and find Cu Chi....think Terry was there helping my Little Bear friends. (25th Aviation)
Thanks to everyone on this! Going back in feb 2018 to find that piece of real estate that many paid for with there sacrifice. pappy
pappy, I didn't really do much, but hope it helped. I sent you a PM with information my son sent. He is a cartographer, so I forwarded your original request to him. This is not his area of expertise, so it may or may not be helpful.
I know he was your brother, but I really appreciate that you are doing this. Many of us use the word sacrifice too easily sometimes without understanding the real cost.
Blue Dog is correct, I was at Cu Chi for 18 months. I was one of those dreaded DOD contractors working on Army Aviation Assets. Crash and battle damage, avionics upgrades etc. Lived on base, ate at the mess hall and dodged the incoming just like the regulars.
Glad that someone was able to help you with your mapping problem.
Terry
Rhody....You've got some good memories my friend.
My reference of "Little Bears" was the helicopter outfit at Cu Chi. They were known as the Little Bears.
Wow. Getting chills. Sorry for the loss of your Brother Pappy and to all who served In The Nam. You were always heroes to us. Keep us posted on that and your trip. Mad Dog
I was 1st Cav, and all over that area. We ran missions out of Ben Cat, but we called it Bearcat.
