Maiden run for an Amtrak train derailed onto I-5 in Washington state near DuPont. Looked like there was traffic that cars landed on. Train was hoping a little over 80

I pass under that overpass all of the time, I have family nearby. I-5 is still closed and they do not expect it to open anytime soon. Anybody who has traveled this corridor knows it's a traffic nightmare during rush hour even when everything is running smooth.

I work on railcars for a living and repair cars that have derailed at just 5-10 mph. The thought of sitting in one that goes 80mph makes me cringe since I know just how easy they derail.

Cause of the accident has not been determined. Train was going slightly faster than that stretch was posted. However, antifa anarchists posted last April about sabotaging train tracks to prevent trains from transporting fracking products.

80 was too fast for that curve and that much weight. Overheads show that the lead engine ran right off of the tracks. You can see where the front cars hit the dirt very clearly and went off into the woods and road side/ then two cars bound up on the bridge and caused the last two or three cars to slide to the far side opposite the curve. the last car hung on the bridge and the pusher engine. The miracle is that so few , comparatively were killed and that the numbers were not opposite. One woman with bruises all over her said she hit a tree , a few light bruises are all she had to show for that , physically. Just a miracle. No way on that curve should that train been going much over 50 max.IMHO. God bless and Merry Christmas, Steve

Bet the black box will show some details. BTW I thought the new trains all had a gadget that would read the speed limit sensors and slow the train down to the posted speed. They put that on a lot of high speed trains after that real bad accident in Philly a few years ago. Either it didn't have the gadget or it didn't work.

They had the sensors, this morning the news said that the train had them, they just haven't been activated yet. They said that would have slowed the train to the recommended 30mph speed for that curve.
Edited: At least the company better hope that the sensors weren't activated!!

Federal report this am said the track had the devices but not installed on the train. Pretty much happened the way I saw it yesterday./ The train hit the curve at 81 mph which was rated to be a 30 mph curve. Completely un-excusable and Criminally negelant/ What happened to the 800,000,000? They can show 184 ,000,000. of it spent on the track. Why were they running a test run without the equipment installed on the train? Just sloppy and just completely un-excusable. Again, Criminal. God bless, Steve

I bet the lawyers are licking their chops. Someone is going to pay, big time. There was a mayor from a local town that had fought against this train coming so close to his town and the highway. He predicted people were going to get killed.

Did they determine how many people died ?? How horrific...... And how in the world does a train take a curve marked at 30MPH going 80 ??? Unreal...

Big Bear-
Obviously the train doesn't take a 30mph curve very well at 80mph.
