I read this interesting piece by James Alan Fox, who is the Lipman Professor of Criminology, Law and Public Policy at Northeastern University

"School shootings are not the new normal, despite statistics that stretch the truth"

In a strange way, it provided perspective, and a ray of hope, for me.

There have been at least two cases in KS. One was a threat against a school that was already taken are of by LE a couple of days before February 14.

The other was a threat against a specific student. It was taken care of immediately when it occurred later last week.

We all know that in almost every case, somebody was aware of the threat. Now, maybe kids (and adults) will be quicker to speak up or take preventative action.

JTV,

Thanks for reading the link. These points hit home for me.

"For all those who believe that schools are under siege like never before, it is instructive to take a statistical road trip back in time.

Since 1990, there have been 22 shootings at elementary and secondary schools in which two or more people were killed, not counting those perpetrators who committed suicide.

Whereas five of these incidents have occurred over the past five-plus years since 2013, claiming the lives of 27 victims (17 at Parkland), the latter half of the 1990s witnessed seven multiple-fatality shootings with a total of 33 killed (13 at Columbine).

Notwithstanding the occasional multiple-fatality shooting that takes place at one of the 100,000 public schools across America, the nation’s schools are safe. Over the past quarter-century, on average about 10 students are slain in school shootings annually.

Compare the school fatality rate with the more than 100 school-age children accidentally killed each year riding theirbikes or walking to school."

I'm not trying to minimize the recent school shootings, just provide a little perspective.

There was another arrest in Michigan too Kevin Saturday after a threat to re enact the Florida shooting at South Lyon High School in Michigan....

How in the world can a kid see what happened in Florida and his reaction is not that of horror.... but a threat to do a copy cat crime ??? WTF. ???????

How can we worry about protecting ourselves from radical Islamic terrorists........ When an even greater threat exists in our own schools from terrorists that we are producing ?????

Even more sick, BB, some idiots are advocating these same kids influence new laws to address the problem.

Some outfit is claiming 18 school shooting so far this year, that's a LIE. One of the events they claim as a school shooting involved a school that was closed and someone committed suicide in the parking lot. Facts just get in the road of a good crisis.
