We have Canadian health insurance I buy for our stays in Newfy. We pay $400 per month. There is a 14% HST tax plus a 12% provincial tax. In addition, the supplement is $100 per month. Because I have that $400 insurance, I get in before anyone because my insurance pays more. You should see how crowded the clinics are because people go for every ache and pain. My fishing partner's wife had breast cancer. They allowed her two rounds of chemo and put her into hospice. Out of desperation, he drove her to Maine General. They tried to save her but to no avail. They told us that if she had come earlier, they could have helped her. Canadian healthcare is great for minor ailments, but if you need surgery or have a serious condition, head for the US. Also, it isn't free, unless you think paying 26% sales tax is free. I and my wife have medicare plus a supplement. We pay $600 per month in addition to what they take out of our paychecks. Nothing is free unless you are on welfare or have a government job where taxpayers foot the bill. Even then, you still pay with a lower salary.

Here’s what I know. Those nations have a lower infant mortality rate. They have better elder care and generally better health than we do. More importantly, they spend LESS per person and perGDP on healthcare costs than we do. If you’re still a fiscal conservative, which is debatable these days, this has to be appealing.

It’s an absolute certainty that at some point a medical catastrophe will affect you or a close family member. Canada is flourishing, The Swiss and Norway, all doing well. There is no chance they will collapse due to their healthcare systems. Canadian tax rates are slightly higher? Atheist, I work there in the summer and my cd's sell up there, you don't know what you are talking about. Also, unless you pay for a supplement, BC/BS, you get a bill for what healthcare doesn't pay. Basically, it is a medicare system. We get billed for 20% if we have no supplement. I am not fond of universal healthcare, but if we have it, only funded with a sales tax. That way, everyone pays into it, and get rid of employer or taxpayer funded health insurance. Teachers, politicians, CEOs, everyone under a medicare type plan funded by a national sales tax. I just hope you don't mind waiting a few months for that knee replacement or cataract surgery. I live on the border. There is a reason why so many wealthy Canadians cross to visit our hospitals.
