It's an interesting article. That said, at the end, I find myself thinking "Hey, kid. Sorry you didnt get your way, but you cant take the ball and walk away if you want anyone to play with you."
My sense is that disengagement actually has worsened things. It's pulled all of "us" further apart. If we could RESPECTFULLY engage, and could "agree to disagree" we could find long term positives to work towards.
Diving into other viewpoints, empathetically listening to other ideas, and openly discussing them even if you disagree could help everyone.
Retreating to our corners because everyone but "us" (whoever "us" is defined as) is a certain way to devolve.

Spike , that would be the conclusion if the cover is the only thing we read. Its not. Give this time, Trust God, pray , and watch., You might get a huge surprise out of this. Remember, All things work together for good to them that love God and keep His commandments. Lately I quote that a lot to myself and daily I see it come to pass.
