I can only give a guess, but here in WI it should be up around 950,000 @ least. Our state is only 1/3 the size of Texas though. Pretty crowded hunting

From: slow mover Date: 05-Jan-08
Here in Colorado it is way too many!

From: The Old Sarge Date: 05-Jan-08
Idaho barely has 1,109,667 people. How many does Texas have?

From: Thumper Date: 05-Jan-08
Old Sarge, The population of Texas in 2006 was 23,507,783 not counting the illegals, counting them its said to be as much as 30 million.

I'm trying to get a national hunter count, for Texas it would be 1,106,181 after subtracting the non-resident licenses sold as these hunters most likely bought a hunting license in their home state.

Total number of Texas hunters is 1,061,181. Please post your state's number.

Thanks in advance.

From: fen tiger Date: 05-Jan-08
CA population 1970 apx 19 million; licenses sold 690,000 CA population 2005 apx 35 million; licenses sold 262,000

Anecdotal evidence of more and more CA big game hunters hunting exclusively out of state especially those who used to hunt public land [apx 20% of CA].

Thanks, Thumper. I don't know Idaho's numbers, but I'll try to find them.

I can see your point in excluding nonresidents, but I think we need to count them. Separately from residents for sure, but count them. They hunted didn't they?

Lessee now ... Texas is about 1 for 23 on resident licenses ... that comes to about 4.35%, no?

So far all I have for Idaho is that our 2006 estimated population was 1,466,465. About 166,000 more than I thought.

Got an e-mail back from Idaho F&G yesterday. They do not publish license numbers online. The guy is mailing it to me.

Best I can find in Montana based on mumbers from the FWP Hunt Planner:

Deer A: 151,832 Resident, 25,513 Non resident

Elk: 127,692 Resident, 18,667 Non resident

Antelope, bear, sheep, goat, moose etc would be harder for me to find. If you want a good solid number, I am sure the FWP can find some better numbers for you... I have no data on how many of those numbers are overlaps, and it certainly doesn't count those who only hunt upland birds or waterfowl...

From: Brotsky Date: 08-Jan-08
South Dakota sells about 85,000 resident hunting licenses (small game/deer/etc.). We also sell 100,000 non-resident small game licenses but those will likely be counted in their home state.

NJ hunting fishing trapping, etc. numbers dropped from approximately 906,000 in 1990 to 356,800 in 2003.

Lot of deer, bear on the rise, tough to get permission or too close to homes. License fees through the roof. Bow season split so you need to buy 2 licenses, one in the guise of a extended season permit in addition to a buck tag that costs as much as the license which limits you to hunt in one zone only.

The 2005-2006 season stats say about 189,000 for Alabama residents. That is for licenses sold during that season. Don't have a clue how many life time license holders there are from prior years. There were 770 life time licenses sold during the 05-06 year.
