So I attended the annual Mississippi Chapter SCI Banquet and Auction event last night. I sitting a table with a person flanked to my left and right. I'm engrossed in a conversation about a recent blue wildebeest hunt with the hunter on left. The hunter on my right began hitting me on my knee and told me that the banquet emcee had just called out my name and was summoning me to the stage because I had just won an award. When I got to the stage I discovered what I had won.
I am still shocked that a "Bowhunter" trumped the "Big Bore Boys" for such a coveted award. I thought I had a rather successful 2017 with a bow. Guess it was affirmed by others. It was a surprising and humbling experience for me.

Great job. I had the pleasure of meeting this fine gentleman on an antelope hunt two years ago at Werner's. He went out of his way before the hunt to mail me information about antelope and what I could expect on the hunt. A truly good man.

In response to your question, the MS SCI Chapter has five awards that may be presented annually- Lifetime Achievement, Hunter of the Year, Huntress of the Year, Youth Hunter of the Year and Conservation Officer of the Year. All nominations must meet a required criteria. Awarding is done on a discretionally basis; therefore, annual awarding is not automatic or mandatory. If the chapter believes true achievement should be noted, awarding is granted and celebrated. Only two awards were presented for 2017- a Lifetime Achievement Award and a Hunter of the Year. I was very humbled to be a recipient and especially as a bowhunter as there are no separate weapon categories for the awarding.
