HUNT # 14 JANUARY 29, TEMP 28 DEGREES, VERY LIGHT WINDS
SOMETIMES EVERY THING GOES RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glad last Friday, the 13th hunt was over (bad luck no geese) and how is the time to pick up and move forward, number 14 is just finished. I tried out my new secret weapon!!!
new secret weapon, a goose flag on a 12 ft conduit pipe. I painted the pipe with camo paint. Had one end just in the blind and when the geese came near, I picked it up high, flagging the goose.

a half hour later this small flock lands near the house. but then one single likes the decoys and lands 24 yards away, First arrow a miss.
That is one happy looking dog!!
Chase and I hang out until 10:30 and every time we decide to pick up the decoys, a goose or two would show up. We were out in the open.

The adventures of Paul and Chase continue! The flag works unbelievably well on Canadas. -Like it for field hunting ducks and crows as well. (Not with the bow like you though, Paul, that is "next level" stuff!!!) Thanks for sharing and stay after those golf course dwellers!
and the final Hero Shot. Chase the wonder dog doing his best.
Thank you for following along on the local adventure. This may not be as exciting as a Alaskan island deer hunt or chasing white sheep in the mountains, but it is a hunt and with bow in hand. Fun stuff. my best, Paul
Very nice Paul, great day. These threads are great.
Nice job! what do you do with Chase when you don't get a pass through. I would be a bit worried about that broadhead sticking out or flopping around . any issues? thx Kip
Awesome paul!!! Thats a fantastic day, congrats. I just picked up the ingredients for my general tso's sauce so we can have general tso's goose nuggets wednesday night. We had our 4 man limit of 20 birds before the sun even crested the mountain. I wish we were using bows, but if u hunt with my buddies. Ur takin a bow to a gun fight, so Benelli it is....
Way to go Paul and Chase!!!!
Wow. You de man! Nice job.
Thanks for posting your success and great dog work
Congrats on another great hunt.
William, I always make sure the arrow has cleared the goose before I send Chase to retrieve. I believe this make over 56 geese bow shot without any issues and 11 for this season.. Thanks for the question. Paul
Awesome hunt Paul! Congrats to you and to Chase!
Great shooting Paul. Are those Spitfire's your launching at those birds?
Same company, ie, NAP but they are NAP Shock Wave, On sale at Walmart, 3 for $15. I also use them on turkeys. The newer M BH has a different head design.
Paul it seems like hit geese always head for water?
Fun hunt for the both of you. thanks for taking us along. Forrest
John, interesting in that this year 5 geese were retrieved off of the iced-over pond. As this is the first year this has happened, maybe my shot placement is off some. Maybe the geese are eating some SUPER FOOD that allows them to fly farther after being shot.. When breasting out one of the geese, I found a few shotgun pellets so it survived, at least one other, being shot at.
Sorry I wasn’t talking about the number flying off. I was more interested in the fact that they all headed toward the lake. Is that just the general direction they come and go or are they flying there for safety?
Thanks for posting these posts Paul. I really enjoy your adventures with geese. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Paul. Thought those blades looked familiar. Same blade as the original spitfire which is a heck of a broad head for Turkey. Enjoy your bird hunting.
Outstanding, just simply outstanding. Love it.
Yea, John, more or less, that is the way they come from, but also for safety as I have seen them on the ice resting sometimes.
guys, this hunt makes 11 goose down, same amount as last year's total. I still have until med Feb. to hunt geese. I have plenty of goose meat to make more jerky.
SO now is the time for the big challenge. The challenge is to kill one with the recurve bow. I will have to leave Chase home or in the truck. Also will be setting the decoys closer to the blind. The ideal shot will be under 15 yards. This morning one goose landed within 15 yards so here's hoping tomorrow one will drop on top of the blind.
HERE WE GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best of luck with the recurve....but I'm gonna miss Chase!
That’s so cool . Thanks for letting me sit beside you and watch the action from My computer . Hunt
Hey Hunt, and the pack out is only 300 yards back to the truck and then 5 minutes to home!
decoys set closer and good room between two groups for a goose to land near. Fingers crossed.

sort of slow morning but then around 9:50 these geese just dropped in without much of a sound.

FEB 4, SUPPER BOW SUNDAY. Temp 17 degrees. 8 am
Ok guys last week I killed three geese and that made 11 compound bow shot geese for the season. THE CHALLENGE WAS THEN IDENTIFIED. TIME TO GET OUT THE STICK!!-- and kill the 12th goose with the Great Plains recurve bow. The arrow would be tipped with Montec 5 BH for good penetration. I moved the decoys in to within 15 yards of the blind to help land a goose or two within my effective range. Chase was along but after a good run, I put him back into the truck. I did not need any loud whining from him if the geese landed close which I was planning on.
and two of the geese landed 15 yards away. I picked up the bow, ok, ok, Super bowl. TIED SCORE, 10 SECONDS LEFT, punt, pass or maybe a TOUCH DOWN.

The suspense is killing me!
Last night I attended the Colorado Traditional Bowhunter Society banquet in Denver. Tom Clum gave a very good seminar on shooting the recurve bow so I came home with high exceptions of the morning goose hunt, with the stick in hand.
I made a smooth draw, anchored, picked a spot, good release, ARROW ON ITS WAY.

Paul, your killing us, we hope it's the same for the goose.

Well, how cool was that? Just when I thought the morning hunt was over, a few presents dropped in from heaven. I had thought of trying to kill a goose with the recuve bow for the past 7 years but never took it along. This year after killing enough geese for jerky, the hunt with the stick became reality. This goose may have been the 60th goose bow killed. A good ending of the season. But wait, the season does not close until mid Feb. I just might have to give it another try. I know Chase wants to go again.
Nothing left to do but pick up the decoys and head home. I don't care what I bow hunt, elk , deer, pronghorn, or geese, just a fun time. See you all the next time and thanks for following along. Time to go home for a few treats. :) my best, Paul
Hey Dave, you got to try this hunt. NO more suspense for sure.
Now that is great stuff, Paul! Congrats on the accomplishment and thanks for bringing us along! Toooooouuuuchdown!!!
Hey Luke, I could not have "scripted" this hunt any better. In my mind and set up this morning, I knew what I had to do to attract the goose into the right place. This goose must have read the script as it landed exactly where it need to. Yea, exactly on the spot. Now if I can just get an elk to do the same thing next fall. thanks for the note.
Great stuff! Good shooting!
Congrats again Paul. Chase deserves a couple more hunts this year...which tends to work out well for us spectators too!!
Way to go Paul! Congrats!
Congrats Paul! You are an MVP in my book! ;-)
Way to go, Paul! Congratulations to you and Chase on some well deserved birds! Any chance you're going to do a thread on making goose jerky, from beginning to end?
PA, Go to Yard Hoppers part 3 and see jerky part. I follow the directions for whole meat, slice the breast thin, add ingredient, keep in re fridge, for 25 hours, and put in dehydrator until complete.
Is that it? Season over? Don't say it's so.
Pat. NO going tomorrow morning. You guys are forcing me to do so. :)
GOOSE HUNT 16, FEB, 6TH, 7 AM, TEMP 23 DEGREES, LIGHT WIND
I will tell you right now, I have nothing to be proud of! I did every thing right until the geese showed up.
30 yards, too far for the recurve bow.

Yea, yea, I know, better luck next time. If that goose had been an elephant, we would be eating elephant back straps tonight and you all would have been invited.
But then it was just a goose! :( my best, Paul
HUNT 17 THE LAST HUNT OF THE SEASON. 6:30 am. Sun rise is 7:03. Feb 7th. 26 degrees this morning, light winds. Maybe goose # 14 will fall to the arrow.
TAKING BOTH BOWS THIS MORNING. AN ALL OUT ATTACH ON THE YARD HOPPERS.
Congrats and good luck on your last one!
"Last hunt of the season...". Say it an't so Joe! :) I think I will petition the Colorado Game & Fish organization to let you continue to hunt "yard hoppers" for at least another month. All of your fans here on Bowsite DEMAND more hunts!! :)
Good luck Paul, I really enjoy these hunts!
