N. H. Is currently having hearings on a bill pushed by HSUS and the Voice for Wildlife protecting coyotes from March 31 to September 15. We don't lose snow some years until late April's or early May up here in the Northern part of the state. This is going to hurt if it passes. Pregnant does and early drop fawns are going to pay. By April, deer are most vulnerable to winterkill as their fat reserves are gone. Be watching in your own states.

lawdy, I'd move from that soon to be, completely liberalized hell hole

Don't be to sure that the insurance lobby doesn't have it's hand in this. They would be happy if deer disappeared.

A law like that will pass in Oklahoma shortly after hell freezes over. Even so I don’t really know anyone in my corner of the world the kills coyotes from April to September. We kill them October through March and most in Dec- Feb. We can’t sell hides outside those months

Buckiller, do you deer hunt on Sundays in CT on state land or in closed zones or any other game on Sunday for that matter? The no Sunday hunting law is as unjust as anything out there, but you wouldn't catch me breaking that law. Criminal charges and losing hunting privileges, weapons, etc. mean more to me than any coyote or deer. It can possibly affect work and family as well and is just not worth it.

No closed season in Maine and during certain times you can hunt them at nite. But no we cant hunt on sundays either.

At least PA seems to have coyote hunting correct 24/7 365. Even on Sundays. not sure why any state would have a closed season on yotes. Now there is a trapping season that closes in Feb. But you can hunt them all year.

Well I certainly understand the complaints on protecting coyotes. So let's just assume that everyone is pissed and will complain. Now, instead of crying about it, let's hear some ideas of why this is happening and how it started. Will be interesting to hear what you all think.

LB - those on the other side insist it's inhumane to kill coyotes with pups, leaving the pups to starve in the den. Bigger question is, do we (the cruel, inhumane, heartless ones) have a counter argument to that?

Buckiller, that's a funny one. Probably good that you're too scared to register with your real name. Game and Fish agencies from across the country monitor the Bowsite.

Good luck with your poaching efforts!

Pat, you don't have to just throw them in the ditch. I prefer to drag them to the middle of a field so that I can enjoy watching the scavengers. Here are two bald eagles feeding on one that I trapped. There was a third eagle that the two eagles wouldn't let near. Pic taken through a spotting scope.

Guys, hate to say it but I think years and years of this type of attitude by "sportsman/Hunters" is coming to bit us in the arse. The general public doesn't understand what we know as to what coyotes do to newborns and other game animals. When they read comments such as elkstabbers they see it as barbaric and cruel and look at us as the nuts that the antis portray us as. It's time to show some respect for all the animals we hunt and if your unable to have respect for coyotes/wolves than at least shut your pie hole and keep quiet. As it was mentioned earlier about poaching them if you disagree with the laws, LEO's read bowsite, well so do antis. Do we need to keep giving them more rope to hang us with?

LB, so you're saying I shouldn't shoot bald eagles over a coyote carcass if I don't agree with the protected eagle law? Sheesh! What is this country coming to?!

“Those of you who don't kill yotes outside of the good fur months are missing the best time to kill coyotes, IMO, and that is when farmers are haying their fields. ”

Pat I get it and I’ll occasionally kill a coyote April- September and that’s usually off my front porch. During winter months I’ll give coyotes a pass while hunting with a gun or driving through the pasture feeding cows, just to come back later and call them. It’s like a turkey hunter wanting to call a bird not stalk it. That said I don’t pass one with my bow in hand. Most of the coyotes in my area are what I call $h!+ eaters. They make a living recycling cow excrement and eating mice. I’m sure there is an occasional fawn killed but not what many on here claim. It’s unusual to see a doe without twins where I hunt.

I can count on 1 hand the amount of coyotes I have shot from April till September. Never really thought about hunting them then.

I did read an interesting article on trapping coyotes at fawning time. Since 70% of coyotes are territorial if you trap them out when fawns are being dropped. It takes a few weeks for the transient coyotes to move in and take there spot.

Like Link said, in the Midwest I havent seen a huge effect coyotes have had on fawns compared to some other parts of the country.

Pat I’m not to far from where you hunt in Kansas and you’re right. A 45 pound coyote is about as big as it gets here. My biggest to date I killed Monday, 40 lbs. Most are 30-35 lbs.

LBShooter: my intent in posting the pic of the eagles feeding on the coyote was to simply show that it didn't go to waste. Lots of people feed birds - but how many can say that they've fed an eagle !?!

As a hunter I greatly respect the quarry that I hunt. That largely comes from the effort of the pursuit and the great eating.

On the other hand there are coyotes, groundhogs, and others that I don't view as game animals, but rather as pests that should be managed. These animals are simply not beneficial to what I am managing my farm for. I have the largest quail habitat in my county. I (with help) planted 5,000+ trees last winter for NRCS approved quail and pollinator habitat. Since I live on the farm that I'm managing for wildlife I view the coyote more like a pest that should be managed. I've seen the damage that coyotes have done. They are nothing special to me. They are just another link in the food chain.

If I lived in a city and saw a coyote twice a year I might be more fascinated and might possibly put them up on a pedestal. The people I work with feel that way because they live in a city and think that coyote is some kind of magic animal.

Pat- I think when the biologists focus on or are in charge of one particular species, they get protective of it. I saw the same thing with a certain WCO that did a lot of work with bears in the Poconos(trapping and tagging and radio collar work). He became very protective of them IMO.

Here in Ohio we can kill them year round but the problem is now a lot of farmers are saying don't shoot any because they would rather have them then the deer. Almost all the areas I trap I have been told not to catch any coyotes.

Here is how the Arkansas law reads for hunting. As you can see, it is kinda convoluted.

Coyote

Sunrise, July 1, 2017-Sunset, Feb. 28, 2018

No bag limit or possession limit.

Dogs allowed to hunt coyotes. Coyote hunting also is open during turkey season, no dogs allowed. Coyotes may only be taken during the day. During youth turkey hunts, only youths may take coyotes. Dogs may not be used when deer season is open in a zone that restricts the use of dogs. Coyote may be taken with archery equipment, rifles of any caliber or shotgun using any size shot. Coyotes may be taken during spring turkey season with hunting equipment legal for that season.

Oddly enough the trapping season for coyotes runs from August 1 to March 31.

Spoke today with Fish and Game. They said they doubt it will pass. The sheep farmers are wild and warned that they will sue for damages. Our problem is that Southern NH no longer exists. It is part of Mass now, a socialistic, urban s$@#hole. Just look at the three ditzes they elected to Washington. Watched Senator Shaheen last night sitting there with a look on her face like she had just crapped her skivvies. We are Conservative up here but outnumbered.

I’m guessing so few people would hunt them from March to September that it wouldn’t make much difference. I highly doubt I’d go hunt yotes in 90 degree weather. The one time where it would be good is during turkey season. I’ve had them run in to the calls.

From: GF

" Lots of people feed birds - but how many can say that they've fed an eagle !?!"

I hope you're using all-copper bullets, then.... If you were found to be deliberately or even just knowingly "feeding" a lead-contaminated carcass to those raptors, that could get bad fast...

There are some states that are seriously considering a lead-free requirement for big game specifically because of the amount of lead that raptors can pick up from a gutpile...

Medicineman - nothing exotic. Maybe you're thinking about adifferent application, but in at least one case, the fawn pushes out the transmitter when it gets dropped. Transmitter stays in one place, which tell whoever is monitoring it that where and when the blessed event has occurred. Makes it a lot easier to figure out how many fawns were dropped and then figure out what percentage get cropped off.....

But maybe you were thinking of something else....

From: elkstabber

GF: you have a good point about lead bullets being bad for scavengers. A snare did that coyote in, so no problem.
