Hope everyone had a great holiday! I was looking for some ideas for mounting my bear. I am going to do a life size of my bear but it is hard see what it would turn out like by looking at a form. So... If you have a mount and would like to shae ideas or suggestions I would love to see them.
Thanks,
HF
do a search on bear mounts and you'll find an archive full of photos
I had a light put in the bottom of the mount to shine up on the bear!
Full body mounts......I can think of a few full bodies I'd like to mount!!!!! I've got lots of Ideas!! :0)
nice work there folks.....one suggestion I would make and my wife has one like this....is standing straight up facing you......I don't like it....the belly hair is THIN and it looks not so good that way!....These others on here though are NICE....it hides the 'belly hair'!
I like the mouth closed observing pose!
Here's one of mine. I have 2 now and a 3rd at the Taxidermist.

Something a bit differnt.

Here's my 2000 Pa. black bear 244# that I wanted to look like a bear walking through the woods. Each time I see the mount it brings back the memory of my first bear sighting.
Stekewood, your mount is fantastic! Some of these others are very nice also. Some of them...well...I guess bears must be tough to mount but congrats to all on your trophies.
I saw a movie a long time ago, and this guy had a full size standing bear mount, and the bear had both front paws sticking out straight and upturned. The guy had it placed next to his bathroom and the bear actually was a towel holder. He would take a shower, walk by the bear, and grab his towel the bear was holding for him! It was prety cool looking! However, I had a really nice open mouth rug made out of mine and it is full time on the wall of my living room. Looks very nice and quickly gets everyones attention that visits.
I LIKE THE setting on that PA bear. very well done. with those ears he looks like a Mule Bear! OLO
Here's mine. I made the base.
Get the new McKenzie taxidermy catalog... some inccredable stuff in there.
Thanks Stihl, I was looking for something different, and I knew that the taxidermist that I use is gifted enough to pull it off. All the credit goes to him.
Here's another view. The camera angle distorts the body size a little, but it's a good look at the lifelike face detail.
Stekewood that has to be the coolest & best looking bear mount I've ever seen.
That is a fantastic full mount stekewood!!Who came up with that idea?
I believe it is a commercially available form. My taxidermist had done one or two before. I saw the pictures, and loved it, so I went for it. One thing about him though, is that he is a real stickler for making his mounts look lifelike. He'll modify the forms, and face unitl its perfect. He's not the cheapest option, by any stretch, but I think its worth it.
Don't know if you picked out a form yet but I'll put this one up again
Heres an old mount done in 1983. I remember the cost was 300.00 and thought it was quite a deal then.Still looks good.It has a paper mache form that was hand made . First bear so it has alot of fond memories with it.
Sorry picture wont go through. Ill try later
440lb SPRING BEAR from NB
Heres the 1983 mount I tried to send last night.Hope it goes this time
Oh Stekewood That is by far the coolest bear mount Ive ever seen!!! Was it higher priced than usual full mounts?
MBguide ... no matter how often I see that picture, I still think it's one of the most beautiful bears I've ever seen and I never get tired of seeing it. A bear and a mount to be proud of for sure.
Great mounts - all of them.
I wish I would have kept the bear mouth closed - looks better closed. Except stekewood - his is awesome. This is a small bear - I asked for a 3/4 body mount coming out of wall on rock. He gave me full body mount but did not charge me for the full body mount.
I agree with a previous post. Check out the McKenzie catalog for some of their new forms. My taxidermist just called this weekend and said mine will be done in about 4-5 weeks. I too opted for something different for this one and chose the laying down pose on page 305 with the rock base. Can't wait to get it back.
Mckenzie Form,,, I believe the LBR-177. I had my taxidermist turn the front foot sideways so you can see the pad on the foot instead of the pad pointing down,, and had him make the mouth only partially open.
I would recommend that you think back about your hunt and the way you remember the bear. then pick a mount that closest to how you remember it.Just my 2 cents. But the ones above hanging in the trees are pretty cool looking
I agree with mounting them in the position they were in when you shot them. I was lucky to have taken these three bears that were all fortunately in similar positions (so taxidermist could use the same form), on recent depredation hunts in various National Parks, such as Jellystone, and then had them mounted in a natural setting.
To each his own on the mounts but I'm with wolfriver hunter and stickflicker on this. Kind of hard making them fit in the trophy room when they are facing the wrong way sometimes but those mounts evoke the strongest memories of the hunt. Best of luck in whatever mount you choose but choose one that is memorable to you. Also good taxidermist can do cool things to modify forms so if you don't see exactly what you want, ask your taxidermist.
If I get one this fall this is the mount I am getting...
Not sure if my pic will open but I did mine with mouth partially open on a natural rock setting with a piece of wood and some greens just as I remembered where I shot him. I also elevated the front so you could see him and his skull as that was his best feature. I put 1 pad up and turned slightly so that could be viewed as well. Try to keep it natural. My base didn't show up too well in this picture.
Sage buffalo, Who's form is that?
KJC: Ken Walker in Edmonton - A1 Taxidermy.
It looks awesome. Now I just need a bear to cooperate and it will be on!
Does anyone really think the majority of these full mounts look good? If I paid $2500-3000 and they looked like these I'd have a fit. A couple look good- BG Bear and Sage Buffalo, but most...
Hunterken,
I don't think the camera does all of them justice.
I would agree that the camera doesn't do them justice, in my experience it rarely does. There are several mounts here that look great. One example off the top is huntinhabit, look at the detail in the nose and mouth area - really the only highly detailed area of a bear in my opinion. That is obviously topnotch work.
As for stekewoods mount I see it as one of those mounts that I would love at first and then get tired of looking at over time. I might be wrong. I am a taxidermist so a lot of times a pose is requested that I don't particularly like for myself, but after it is completed, I really take a liking to it. Stekewoods bear could easily fall into that category.
Here's a different mount that may be worth considering if you're pressed for space, or have 2 bears to mount. These two had their rumps rubbed so a full body on the bigger bear wasn't possible. Taxidermy was by Dale @ Tratton Run.
From the Alaskan Penninsula, squares 10'10".
A grizzly I just finished, from Kotzebue, AK.
My bear mount just got completed. I thin it looks very good.
How about standing up and rubbing/scratching his back against a tree or sitting on his fat rear with a paw in a honey jar like Winnie the Pooh?
crestedbutte, Check out Revolution Taxidermy...they are a very small company that makes forms...I am pretty sure they have a bear form like you are talking about.
Steve, who did that mount?
Bill V.
Suggest a rug.
I have a full body mount of a brown bear. Hate the thing. Would far prefer a rug. I was talked into LS mount by several people due to size of bear. Mistake.
