2010 PACK REVIEWS PART 2
Elk
Contributors to this thread:
I have had a few guys inform me that we should start a new pack thread. It's hard for people with "dial up" internet to download all the pics and info (sorry I did not think abou that) :)
Since the Sacrifice is one of the packs that I have had the most PM's about, I will post some pics and info about this pack first.
Another pack that I get a bunch of questions on is the Blacks Creek Barbarian featherweight. I don't have a bunch of info on this pack, so I will contact Robert @ Blacks Creek and have him do a review of this pack.
Again, let's keep this as posative and informative of a thread as we can!
Please use the PM option for all pissing contests------ THANK YOU! :)
This is a winter kill that I found when I was shed hunting. The pack had about 15 lbs in it already, and I would guess the 7x9 was around 40 lbs. The pack could handle a front qaurter along with the head, but I would not wanna be going through any blowdown.
I had the wife take a few pics with the pack stuffed with gear. I just started jamming in as much crap as I could and then threw the Swaro and T-pod on. I weighed the pack after the pics, it weighed 53 pounds.
I have enjoyed your posts on packs, thanks alot. If you were going to pick a mid-sized pack for a day pack or 2 day pack that would hold a bow. What would you look at. I want something that I can wear while riding my bike in for the day. I carry a fair amount of BS, but don't like strapping my bow to the bike. Thanks, Yendor
When you say 2 day, I am thinking you mean overnight? With that in mind, you have about a 30 packs to choose from. I will give you my top 5 and if you can, try those 5 out with your normal gear weight and choose from those. I'm not sure if you are interested in having a day pack that can also haul a good amount of weight, but if that is a option that you are looking for, that should weigh heavily on you choice.
Badlands Sacrifice
Eberlestock X-2 (the new model)
Sitka flash 32 or the new Sitka bivy models
Badlands 2800/2200
If you don't mind paying the money and can get your hands on the Kifaru spike camp or the Mystery Ranch Longbow, those are great packs as well.
Hey Reaper- I have a 21" torso. Will the sacrifice have 2 size models (med and large)?
It has one size torso and if you are 21 inches, that would be at the max ( and still fit well).
What pack is that in the first picture?
I Broke the waist band buckle on my ultra day. I hope the new nylon buckles fix this problem as I've probably broken at least 5 buckles on different Badlands packs in the last 3 years...pisses me off. Great packs...crappy buckles on the non nylon/pre 2009 models. The Kelty Cache worked great.
another sacrifice with horns pic
Sweet pics Aron. That is a huge bull! Did you score him?
Aron,
In the third post on this thread, you mentioned your wife. Did I miss something? I've only been gone for three days. WTH?
Henry
She feels better when I say wife, but you know more then anyone, I will never get married :) I pay her bills, that is close enough!!!
Anyone that is looking for a pack. I have a few extra packs that I am going to sell. If you are in need, send me a PM and I will let you know what I have. (I did not beat the hell out of the packs I am selling) :)
I was gonna say... did you get married during your shed hunting trip?
What a nice bull! I wish we could keep winter kills here in UT. If it is attached to a skull plate we have to leave it and contact the DWR to rule out poaching and then they might let us have it. It is kind of a pain and with a bull that nice I am sure they would find some reason to "need to hold on to it." I have found some pretty nice mule deer skulls that I have left because I did not have the time to contact the DWR and then wait for them to figure things out.
It is a beautiful thing to see mainbeams so long that they are almost dragging on the ground.
Where can you get the aftermarket buckles for the badlands packs?
This is from the bugs n bullets website for preordering the sacrifice. It says it's capable of packing 35 pounds. Is that correct? The Badlands diablo at half the size is suppose to carry up to 45 pounds.
"Check out our how to video: (copy and past) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50KE-1LuBrk Bugs N Bullets pro-staff has this pack in the store. This is the lightest pack on the market, weighing only 3.8 pounds but capable of packing 35 pounds. The straps keep it tight to your back with a suspension frame. This pack has comfort and functionality of a great hunting pack."
I'm a little curios about the 35# thing myself. I did a 6 mile loop last night and the pack had 47#'s in it and it hasn't broken yet. I'll keep my fingers crossed:)
I am curious. I don't see your sleeping bag or sleeping pad. Are they in your pack? Back in the day we used to attach them on the outside.
Elk Reaper, I am thinking about the eberlestock X2 (new model). I live close to where I can hunt and pack in a camp (with my large pack) and then hunt from there. The X2 would be used as a day pack and to get back my first load of meat (backstraps, neck and head/antlers) back to camp. I have not seen the new X2 yet due to the fire at their warehouse. What do you think? Thanks!

The new X2 is a going to be a bad A$$ pack. I would not hesitate to use it for what you are talking about.
mnjen
I always put my sleeping bag inside my pack. If the sleeping bag will not fit inside, I would buy a bigger pack.
I have had several PM's about using a normal mountaineering packs for backcountry. If you get some of the expedition type packs, this is not a bad way to go.
If you are thinking about doing this and are concerned about the pack not being in camo, I have talked with Gary at Dayonecamo.com and he said that he can make custom pack covers in his light weight material (Max-1,ASAT,Predator and a few others). This would be like a rain cover (not water proof) but used in the same fashion. these would weigh in the 2-3 oz range. I will post some pics when he gets finished up with mine. His # is 303-761-2070

Cervus, I too am on board with the Reapers thoughts! I'm picking up an X2 just for the exact reasons you mentioned. I will never ever use a pack for elk hunting that does not have outside the main bag capabilities of packing meat out from kill site. For those 3 day 2 night or so excursions I will use the badlands 2200, it has just enough room for such times.
The X2 will serve as my All Day Pack only! I can't wait to give this smaller pack a shot!
ElkNut1
Elk Reaper...
What was that first pack? I didn't think the Sacrifice was out yet... The 2nd picture a Badlands 4500?
I'm looking at that sacrifice when I can get my hands on one... I have the BL 2800 and the 4500
Great thread!
Those are all pics of the Sacrifice.
I know some people, that know some people, that robb some people, and that is how I got a Sacrifice:)
What is the situation with eberlestock and the new X2? Will they be available soon? I won't buy a $150 pack without putting some weight in it and walking around for a while. Sporting good stores in this area are not carrying any lately. Anyone know?
Anyone seen or got hornhunters curl pack at all ?
ElkNut1's Link
The X2 has hopes of being up for sale towards the end of May!
ElkNut1
For those of you considering X2s, I looked at one and found that it does not fit long torsos very well. I think I measure 21". Make sure you try before you buy....
I di the green mountain loop tonight (8 miles) with this pack, it is one of the lightweight mountaineering packs. It is 5,200 cubic inches and weighs 4 lbs 10 oz's(on my scale). I did the loop with 70 pounds of dead weight and the pack felt great and held up very well.
For the guys that are asking me about using the mountaineering packs, this pack should be on the top of the list. REI XT 85 is the name.
A closer shot of the load lifters.
Mountaineering packs
1) REI XT 85
2) arc'tyrex bora
3) Gregory Baltoro
4)Osprey Aether 85
All good packs that can handle heavy loads.
Thank for the info gentlemen!
Elk Reaper, how would the X2 perform as an overnighter with a J2SD spike camp duffel strapped to the back?
Elk Reaper,
Can you post photos of the eberlestock blue widow load lifters up close? I'd love to see them.
It would work for a over nighter, but the X-2 would not be my pack of choice for overnight use. The duffel would make the pack extend a little to far off your back.
Again, it would work, and for a multipurpose pack, the X-2 is great, but you can find a few other packs that are geared a little better for overnight trips. If you are going to use it for a day hunt pack/meat hauler/ overnighter, the X-2 would be a good choice (with ultralite gear).
Hope that makes sense;)
Snellpastor
I don't have a Blue Widow anymore and I don't have any good picks of the lifters.
If anyone has pics of the load lifters on a Blue Widow, can you please post them!
Thanks in advance:)
Elk Reaper,
Do you still have some packs for sale?
I can't believe how well that Sacrifice looks... must just be a scaled down version of the 4500... I wish I had waited just one season now... I need to find someone that knows someone that can rob them and give it to me...lol
Hey Guys
I talked with Robert@ Blacks-Creek this morning. He is going to try and post some pics of the featherlight in the next few days. It sounds like I will be able to get my hands on one as well (soon I hope).
From talking with Robert and seeing the pictures of the pack, I am very excited to get this pack into the woods.
I will keep everyone posted.
I've been talking to Aron (Reaper) about a 4500 I'm selling and he told me to just throw it on here.
It is a large in like new condition and is in AP. I also have an extra set of stays I got from Badlands that I will throw in. I love the pack, just need a medium.
$275 shipped. PM for pics or other info.
I have the Gregory Baltoro and really like it for carrying a load. But once back into where I am going to camp and hunt I need a daypack. So, last year I strapped the Eberlestock X2 onto the Gregory. Then I filled the X2 up with what I needed for each day of hunting....I don't know if there is a perfect scenario for this. The guys at Oregon Pack Works seems to have addressed this best.
Where can you get the aftermarket buckles for the badlands packs?
REI, Armu surplus store, or call Badlands and ask them for the post July 2009 model buckel. The new model buckle that they are using is the same as what is on a osprey pack.
Thanks Aron....I dropped an email to badlands just now for a set of new buckles for my ultraday and bragged on your Sacrifice.
No problem man, I will talk to them tomorrow as well.
Just have to throw in the OSPREY Argon 85 is one that is a bit heavier than the Aether 85, but appears to ba able to carry a heavier load if you intend to take out a large meat pack. Great thing on these too...they can be heat molded to fit your shape a bit better possibly than some of the others.
I'm going to be selling one of my badlands 4500 packs. It's brand new never been used yet. Bought for a loner for this upcoming year but don't need one now. Pm me if interested.
Backcountry
Bx3 Is in need of a multi day pack. Shoot him a PM.
Cabela's Alaskan External frame pack.
Sorry for the horrible pics. These are digital pictures of old film pictures.
I have the cabelas extreme Alaskan. They are so comfortable and haul meat loads great! We can still see the smile and the nice bull that's what matters man!
Thanks much backcountry. My only complaint with this pack is that the aluminum rods to which the shoulder straps connect, have bent over the years while carrying very heavy loads.
on my extreme it's set up a bit differant and pretty bomb proff. Never had over 100 lbs on it though and don't plan on it either lol got to save those knees for years to come! Mine has fabric meat shelf which I like. I have only used the frame not the pack on the frame. Do you use it for your main pack or just a meat hauler?
I guess it depends on your definition of "main pack". It's "my" main pack. I often carry a Dwight Schuh Ridgeline inside this pack to use for short day trips. This pack has an aluminum framed shelf (shown loaded with my Kelty sleeping bag).
This pack is very difficult to hunt with because there is way too much metal on metal and too many metal key-rings. It's awfully noisy when fully loaded. I use it as my main pack to get deep into the woods. Once I'm where I want to be, I use the Dwight Schuh for daily excursions. It's not traditional bivy style hunting I guess. If I could only take one pack I wouldn't take the Cabela's or the Dwight Schuh. I guess I'd have to re-read Aron's threads and find a different pack altogether. Maybe if Aaron hasn't sold the best pack for this application yet he can PM me with his best suggestion and the price of it?
Another concern with my Alaskan is that the shoulder strap is fraying and seperating from the grommet that connects it to the pack. I'm not sure how well you can see it in the pic, but if it should tear while I'm in deep I'll be in big trouble. I'm sure this is also caused by carrying loads heavier than what this pack is designed for.
If I can get my hands on a Sacrifice, there will be a 4500 with only 2 days of hunting on it for cheap! That pack is sick! I thought the 4500 was cool!
Yep Im pretty sure I got rid of my extra 4500 so now its just time to sit and wait until it comes out... when is that gonna be June? hopefully it comes out sooner!
Hey ER, great pics and bull find. BTW, here in Iowa, and many states, if your introduce a woman in public as your wife, you are legally married if she wants to push it.
I know when they first came out, you needed a masters dagree to adjust them:) Not sure how they are now.
Hardcorehunter
My GF and I have lived together for 2 years, our names are on all the bills together, she is on my vehicle insurance and we have the same mailing address ( I'm on her medical insurance as well) Talking about it on Bowsite is the least of my worries:):) but thanks for thinking about me:). Women can be evil when they wanna be!
hey elk reaper wondering if you had any pics and review on mystery ranch long bow pack thanks
I have acquired a Arc'tyrex Bora 80. It will fit a torso from 17-20 inches. You can look at the reviews on the pack if interested. Tags are still on the pack
Anyone puchased the whole enchillada from Oregon Packworks? If so what was the price paid?
bwhntr13
I could not find any pics of the longbow, sorry about that. Did you have spacific questions about it, or did you just wanna see it in action?
There seems to be some hard core MR guys on Bowsite, maybe they can post some pics of the pack in action. I think "zachbow" has been using the CC and now has the longbow. He has killed a ton of animals and prolly has some good pics of the longbow and CC in action.
Shoot him a PM and maybe he can post some pics.
Sorry I was not more help
Can you show the 2200 hauling meat? I want to see how you attach it, I have heard of guys using the outside and others the interior........
The 2200 has a "meat shelf" that stores in the bottom....zip it open, lay the meat on the back of the pack and wrap up the meat shelf and attach up top....then compression straps across the middle. Pretty sweet setup. Essentially its a hunter orange strip of cloth/nylon that cradles the meat at the bottom and holds it tight to the pack.
Bambam check out the first 2010 pack thread. Elk nut posted a pic towards the bottoms of the 2200 ( Im pretty sure it the 2200) with a good load.
That pick above is exactly what I was looking for, I now understand it much better. Thanks Guys........
ElkReaper ....sent you a PM....
I like that nylon meat shelf. I think I'm going to make one for my Dwight Schuh pack. I suppose if I get a pretty heavy duty piece of nylon and have a seamstress sew it on the bottom of the pack super strong, I would be in business? It won't have a zipper pocket to fit in, but I could use two sided material that is blaze on the outside and camo on the inside so I could just roll that thing up and put a rubber band around it when it's not in use. What do you guys think?
Obviously, it would be ideal to just get one of these awesome new packs, but right now I'm driving through a NO-SPEND zone.
I bought an Eberlestock X2 this past February, how do I know if it is the new model or not?
Archtichill,
if you do that have her seon pocket on the bottom it can fold into and the sew on some velcrow so when it's rolled up u can stick it togeather and will stay out of the way. That's what holds mine on my frame pack and it works great
I talked with Mike @ storycreek yesterday and he said they should have them in around Wednesday. Can't wait to get mine!
bwhtr13 I have bought a longbow and the nice frame and I also bought the accessory pouches to go on the sides to increase the capacity. I am going to try it out shortly on some training hikes. I will get some pics and post them on here.
arctichill,
I have the same Cabela's Outfitter frame and my aluminum pins bent too from carrying 100 pounds of elk.
I made new steel pins by taking a piece of steel rod and welding a washer to one end so it's like the head of a nail. I drilled a hole in the end for the split ring.
The grommet on the shoulder straps on mine is fraying too. I bought new shoulder straps from Campmor.
Story Creek only shows RealTree as a fabric choice...no free item along with it...free shipping though.
Snag,
He said this first batch they are getting is only the real tree apg camo. I think he is only getting 5 packs in this shipment. The next shipment is sometime later in may and he will have max 1. I can live with having the apg if it gets me the pack faster :)
Thanks Mike. That sounds like a good fix. Which straps did you get from Campmore and are you happy with them?
I really have been impressed with that pack. It has some issues that need repair, but considering what I've put it through and the loads and miles it's experienced, I can't complain.
Just bought the the badlands ox cant wait to put into action
How do you measure torso?
Also, may have missed it but does the sacrifice have the anti sweat back or whatever its called? Where the pack doesn't sit directly on your back to limit the sweat factor.
Shaft2Long, put your chin on your chest, the bone sticking out on the back of your neck (just above your traps) is the top of the measurement. Find the top of your hips, draw a lateral line to your spine, that's the bottom. You will need help to make an accurate measurement.
Hike&Hunt thank you, appreciate that.
Hypervent, is the sacrifice a hypervent model. Thats the word I was looking for earlier.
The Sacrifice is a Hypervent model. If you look at a Osprey Atmos 50 or 65, the Sacrifice has a vent system like those.
If you need a visual on torso length measurment. Go to REI's website, they have a good video of it.
The vent system on the Sacrifice. Let me know if you need a better pic (this is the only one I have at the moment).
Elk Reaper, have you done a load test on the sacrifice yet? If so, what was it able to handle comfortably? Thanks.
Reaper,
Could you show a pic of the outside of the hipbelt on the Sacrifice? I'd like to see if there are pockets and how I might attach rangefinder/GPS pouches etc.
Thanks again for your great info and hard work.
Tim
Ask and you shall receive.
Thanks, Man!
Hike&Hunt
I have load tested the hell out of the pack. I would say that I have about 150 miles on the packm with weights from 30-80 pounds.
0-40--- Great
40-50 --- Good
50-60---- It was OK but starting to feel like a duffle bag with shoulder straps.
60-80---- Duffle bag with shoulder straps/suspension was gone and I was praying all the stiching would not tear:):)
The pic I attached is with 46 lbs of gear ( bow weight not added) and it felt good. I did a 7 mile trip with it that day (no bow) and was very happy with it.
I think I should add a few things about the Sacrifice and pther packs, just to make a few things clear:) as well as my opinions on pack companies and how they are changeing/trying to make you a better hunter.
The Sacrifice is not a load hauler and is a desighned for the ultralite bivy hunter. The guy that is going in several miles (bonzi one nighter/UL 5 dayer). It will work for a first trip out pack, but was not made with that sort of use in mind.
The packs that are coming out this year like the Sacrifice,Barbarian featherweight,Bivy45 and 30) are going to hold up to a good amount of weight and abuse but are not a "load hauling" packs. They are packs that are being made with the Ultralight hunter in mind. They are not built like a Mystery Ranch grizz or Dana desighn overkill (many other could be named). Those packs are bullet proof and could haul just about anything, the problem was that they weigh 9-11 pounds and are stiff as woodpecker lips. The MR Crew Cab is a good example of a pack that can carry just about anything you can attach to it, with that said, there are down sides to load hauling packs like those, just like there will be down sides to the ultralight packs.
When I see people post that the Mystery Ranch Crew Cab or Badlands 2800 (put any other pack name along with these) is the only pack you will ever need, the first thing that comes to my mind is, FOR YOU, but not everyone. That is why I don't post that about ANY pack that I review. It will all boil down to fit and functionality for the person using it.
After all the packs I have used, I have found that having a few diff pack for all of my needs is best. I know that costs more money and I know you can get by just fine with 1 pack, but for me to be the most efeciant I can be, I need more then one pack.
The Sacrifice/Bivy 45/ barbarian featherweight are going to be the pack you want to have on your back when weight is a factor/when you have a packer coming in, or when you are only using it for your first trip out( or are going to be packing light loads of meat). If I was in a hunting party that had 4 guys, the barbarian or Sacrifice would be a great pack to have and would work for everything ( you can split up the loads).
A good way to look at packs is comparing them to vehicles.
4500/MR CC/Kifaru Longhunter/Blue Widow---------Deisel truck that can tow anything but don't try parking it at wal-mart.
Blacks-creek Canadian/2800/Eberlestock X2-------- My jacked up jeep, that I can beat the shit out of and will do anything I need, just won't always be the best at what it's doing and sucks on long road trips.
Sacrifice/Barbarian Featherweight/Bivy45------- The BMW SUV of packs, rides with comfort and makes you feel great, but nothing you wanna shovel cow shit in the back of or haul river rock in.
Hypervent/Ascent 14/Diablo/ -----------The "Ducati/R1" of packs. You can haul ass in them and stay in stealth mode , but don't expect to move your moms TV to your house with it.
I hope this explains things a little better and sorry about the spelling (or lack of spelling:)
The suspension/venting on the sacrifice looks similar to the z55 gregory that I use for backpacking. It's designed to carry similar 35 lb or so loads.
My pack with 25 lbs is a far nicer carry than my same brand heavy hauler with the same load, the suspension and venting on these new designs is really an upgrade.
The only other comment I have is that 3500 cu in. is a lot of room if you have higher end light gear but it would be easy to run out of space otherwise.
thanks again Aron, If I didn't own the z55 I would most likely buy a sacrifice it's a good looking rig.
Elk Reaper, do you know if Eberlestock has plans to replace or upgrade the Blue Widow with a new model? I have the X2 and love it for what it is...looking for a larger pack. Where do you put the Oregon Pack Works "Orion" in this bunch of vehicles...
The Orion would be in the jacked up Jeep category. IMO
ER, do you have an info on Horn Hunter packs or the Eberlestock J34?
New X2 vs. BL 2200... What's your take on that one? Day-hunter w/ first load out possibility and the possible 3-4 UL bivy... Any idea on how much bigger the new X2 will be? If it's up to 2100-2300 cu/in, they would definately be in the same class right?
gil
I have no idea about the new X-2. I have only been told about it, nothing first hand. I would think (from what I have been told) that the new X-2 should be in the same ball park as the 2200. They beef'd up the suspension/waist belt and that was the only bad thing about the old X-2.
simmsshunter
The J34 is a great pack, but if you are going to bow hunt, I would ust the blu widow. The J34 has the gun holder and that keeps the pack away from your body. If you are not going to be carrying a gun, it is not really something you need as a bowhunter.
As far as the horn hunter packs, I have used the mainbeam and mainbeam Xl, but was not able to get much time with them,
Here is what I will be using this fall. They are called bullpac. I like to think of this setup the same as layering clothing when hunting. I was looking for a system that was flexible for multiple uses. The first pictures is of the frame itself with the pack next to it. This picture has the larger pack. The frame is perfect for backpacking that elk hind quarter out of the timber. I have also used it during those day hikes with the day pack instead of the larger pack you see here. The frame also has an attachment to it so that you can have the larger pack attached on the bottom and the day pack on top. Bottom line you can pack in with both packs and then put your day pack on the frame for daily use or use the day pack independently of the frame.
Bullpac with pack frame, large pack and the extension.
Bullpac with the frame, extension to the frame, large pack and day pack combined.
Bullpac with the frame, extension, large pack and day pack to the side.
Yesterday I walked 1.5 miles with 30 pounds including all 4 pieces. It was a cake walk!
I am still amazed how fast the pounds add up when filling the pack. I don't know what the average weight everyone is carrying on this thread. I am trying to keep it under 50 pounds.
I should also mention that I have used this frame to carry my turkey blind, treestands and climbing sticks.
Good explanation elkreaper! I like the BMW SUV! We all want everything and now, so you are right have a few for different tasks!
80-lbs + sucks in any pack!
Elkreaper, thought you might know the Bergan packs since they are used by british sos. I hunt with the Bivy 45 but usually have my Bergan's Power Frame in camp or at the truck. I have never scene it brought up on here. I think it is one of the best external frame heavy haulersout there. It will carry way more than I want on my back!!
The only Bergen pack that I have ever used was the "snugpack", It was in 1995 or 96 and I was in FT Clayton Panama, training with the SAS. It was hot as hell, I had pricky heat all over my back/shoulders and I was getting my ass handed to me by the SAS guys.
After all that-----I can't remeber if I liked it or not. I can tell you that I did not like the Panama jungle or the darien gap:)
The Osprey Argon 85
In this pic, I have 10 days of food and gear. I would normally have my spotter and T pod on the outside of the pack, but I don't like doing my training with those attached, so I add a gallon of water on the inside of the pack to make up the missing weight.
This pack is one of the most comfortable I have used. It has several options/attachments. You can buy a additional pack that will attach to the back of the Argon and use it for a day pack. You can also take the straps that are for your tent or slleeping pad (bottom outer straps) and attach them to the water bladder holder that is inside your pack, this will turn the pack into a camelback. You can also use the "lid" of the pack for a fanny , the fanny will also attach to the additional pack that you can buy.
I will post more pics of all the attachmants later.
ER- Can you put this OSPREY Argon 85 in the "Vehicle" catagoy for us. I am guessing it will be in the Heavy Truck division, but may be a Jeep too? I can't wait to get my hands on one to try out. Read some really great reviews and the molded padding sounds like it is awesome. Will it cinch down enough to be an okay (heavier) day pack as well?
It's a little of everything, has the load lifters at the angle i like, handled heavy loads well and will compress down to next to nothing. So far it gets two thumbs up. It has not stood the test of time, but time will tell:)
I see you mention the Blue Widow and I was curious about that pack. Is there anyplace in the other thread you talked about that one? If not, how's that pack? Can it handle good sized loads?
Reaper, I've been following your pack reviews and appreciate all of the insight. I wanted to ask you a few questions regarding gear, however. The first is, which bp stove do you prefer of the few you mentioned in a different thread? Second, which is your preferred base layer brand/material? Lastly, I've noticed you are wearing a black hoodie recently with a horn/skull logo? What is that? Where can I get one? It looks pretty bad ass!
What's up Aron, I finally joined this site. Your pack reviews look good. I checked out the XT85 at REI. It is pretty nice and very light for the size. It lacked pockets, with only 7 counting the fanny pack pockets. Overall, I am still leaning to my Badlands 4500 for extended trips, especially since I rebuilt my stay, which should be bullet proof now.
Shaft2long
I talked about the Blue Widow a few times, but I would say that it can carry as much as any person could handle, durability is never a issue with the EB packs. You could find a pack that is more comfortable, but the BW is very versatile and that goes a long way.
Otherwise...BUY WHAT YOU LIKE......it all comes down to personal preference and what you've already decided you want....A-Ron ain't gonna tell ya nuttin' different. Lord knows I ended up with a dang Kelty Cache Hauler frame pack when I really probably should a got a BL 2800 and called it good......but I'm a cheap arse and Aron knows it and didn't try to tell me otherwise. He won't push you one way or the other but he will give you the straight poop on what a pack does and where it might lack in his personal view. The rest is up to you.

This year (when weight and altitude are a factor) I will use a SOTO OD-1R. It's new to the market and I have only used it a couple times, but is working well so far. I will use a JB from time to time, but only when weight and space are not a issue. As far as base layers, Smartwool and IceBreaker, you can't go wrong with either one of those. They are pricey, but well worth the money. IMO
That Hoodie I'm wearing is from a company called "Knotty Dreamz", the hat I am wearing is from them as well. 2 brothers own the company and they are based out of Colorado. The idea behind the logo is the Colorado "Big 8). It's something (the big 8) that they have been working at achieving for their entire lives. They make some other cool shirts and hats as well. I will try and post some other pics of their stuff, but it is what I am wearing in most of my pics anyway. They are good guys and they do the wilderness bowhunting thing like me. I will attach a link below.

Good luck this season
Pic of the hat and hoodie.
How much weight you think that osprey could handle? Looked it over at rei and it is very nice, packs way tight for daily use while out. But if it can't handle a boned out muley than I don't want it.
When you getting the barbarian to put through its paces? Really excited at that bag.
Joe
Reaper, thanks for the response and the info. I've been using the pocket rocket, but I'm going to look at the Soto. Merino wool has been my choice for years...it's just super pricey. I checked out the knotty dreamz site. They have some cool apparel. I'm going to have to get me and my wife some. I like the company story and logo. Is the quality of the apparel you have pretty good? Thanks again for your help!
Check out 33 below for not TOO expensive grundies and shirts in merino wool......once you wash and dry it once its downright luxerious comfy.
That hat is da BOMB.....seen it up close when he got it new......color me green with envy.
HANG-n-HORNS
The knotty dreams stuff is good quality. They have some synthetic and some cotton. The hoodie is synthetic and that is what I train in most of the time. The thing I like best about their clothing, is the fact that I can represent the hunting industry and train at the same time. I was wearing my EBJ hoodie when training, but the hoodie in the pic is synthetic, so it wicks and dry's alot faster.

Sent you a PM.
Aron, Thanks for all the work and great reviews. Just got order conformation from Payson Outfitters. My sacrifice should be on my doorstep on the 29th.
Aron, eight miles with 70 pounds. You are an animal!! LOL
I'm good with heavy weight for long distance, but if you asked me to run 5 miles----------Well,,,,, You would need a big gun:)
Everyone is gifted with different abilities, I got the shaft in the running department:) At least I have strength on my side. I think the Army got all the running that I had to give.
BOWJO
Shoot me a PM when you get the pack, lett me know if you have any questions and give me the 411 on what you think about it.
Will do Aron. Payson offered free shipping and two free items. Also e-mailed me a you tube video review of the pack in action. I've been very satisfied with there service.
Elk reaper
I really like the concept of the oregon packworks, just wish it wasnt so expensive. Do you think there is any chance these packs may go down in price, looking at other trends of pack prices? I think it would probably boost sales for them. Great reviews!!
elktracker
I would call OPW, and talk to Karl, maybe he can work with you on the price. As far as I know, the prices are not coming down.
8-miles with 70-lbs, I bet your hunting buddies love you! I always try to hunt with guys bigger than me for the same reason and I can't ruyn either, but hell I did not get the size either!
When you want to get rid of your extra packs let me know what you got. I would like to play with some I have not had yet. I'll be in Denver alot this year, so could stop and look.
Oscar....er....I mean Aron....btw....not a peep from the boys at BL about my buckle email. I'm gonna get miffed!!!!
Jordan
Calling them now:)
That worked. LOLOLOLOL!!!!!
Will the new X2 have a longer torso length...or be adjustable?
hey elk reaper what kind of weight do you put in your pack for training
A guide friend of mine runs a big Osprey, and he likes it wiht 100+ lb. loads. Durability has been good.
I train with 40-80 lbs, I will sometimes go over that, but that is just to test a packs durability.
I try and keep things as close to hunting as I can. When I have 40 lbs in my pack, I do more interval training. I will try and do 100-200 yard runs and then walk for 300-400 yards and mix things up. This is what I do to prep for the day to day hunting type stuff.
When I train with heavy weight (65-80 lbs), I will do a long hike at a somewhat slow pace (2.5 miles per hour + or -). I try and do a 10-12 mile hike every 7-10 days. I would compare this to the hike in (with all my gear) to the area I'm hunting or the hike out with a elk quarter.
that some good training ideas what are you using in your pack for that kind of weight
Woops, my bad, I thought you wanted to know total weight:)
I have a couple gallon water jugs (full) with the lid taped shut. I have a bag that is sewn in the shape of a elk quarter and it's filled up with rice. I also have a stuff sack that is full of small bags of rice. I like rice better then anything, it will not get all over the place like sand.
Just some info for Oregon Packwork fans The guys at Oregon packworks dropped the price of the Whole Enchillada to $425.00 He will probably anounce it but i wasnt sure so i wanted to let my fellow bowsiters know. Cant wait to get mine!!
Hope you dont mind me posting this pic of ya karl. I really like the predator camo, And just so ya all know this is the Whole Enchillada.
Good to see they changed the price, seeing as how it was 50 dollars cheaper to get the orion pack and the green gate body than is was to get the "whole enchalada" before. Even now there is no real advantage to buying it all at once, i think it all just adds up to the same price.
i am not trying to be mean at all. I am hoping to set up a time to check it out after i graduate in may. i am going down to bend for a few days after that.
Joe
Snellpastor,
I received an e-mail from Gary at Eberlestock yesterday concerning questions I had about the new 2010 X2.
They will not be adjustable for torso length (same as the 2009 models), but will fit "a wide range" of people.
They will have a longer, sturdier hipbelt. I was told in a voice-mail last week the pockets on the hipbelt will be a bit larger than the 2009 model.
They will have a tubular aluminum frame (vs a sheet or stays) which will help with load-carrying.
Other than the changes to the hipbelt and frame, the pockets, straps, and general layout of the pack has not changed from the 2009 model.
Boy, just checked out the rei xt 85. That baby is light, has a great looking frame and packed down to almost nothing when empty. This one is definately going to be on my short list. Decent color for hunting too. Add a badlands ultra day and you are under 7 pounds, have about 7000 ci and. The versatility to do anything you can think of for 3 to 10 days. Wouldn't be an elk quarter hauler but still handle aboned out deer or first trip with head and elk cape/backstraps. Also looking at the barbarian with ultra day combo. Would be 8.5 lbs. Just have to see how that barbarian looks.
Joe
I ordered my Barbarian Wed. Should have it soon.
brettpsu
Try and take some pictures of the pack and post some thoughts about it as well.
Who's using the barbarian this year? ordered mine and it has been shiped a few days ago.
zrider2's Link
Has anyone seen the new Full Curl from Hornhunter in person? I was thinking about buying just their hybrid frame, and attatching my X2 to it for the 2-3 day trips. Then if I do need to pack out a quarter with my camp I could slip it in the meat shelf, and attatch my X2 on around the elk quarter. It would also be sweet to have a lightweight frame with an integrated bladder to go back in with. The load llifters on it are at a much better angle than my Blue Widow too.
Is there a place to see more pictures and the weight of that full curl pack. Nothing irritates me more than a company not having several good pictures of their items.
You guys should give the Badlands OX pack a whirl! Just got mine and cant wait to stuff it with a big buck!
"Is there a place to see more pictures and the weight of that full curl pack. Nothing irritates me more than a company not having several good pictures of their items. "
I called and spoke with John the owner I guess and he sadi they were working on updating their catalog. I emailed him as well to find a dealer, but have not heard back yet. He told me though he is 6' and the stays work for him. I want to look at the combo myself. Elkhunter when you going to get one? :)
Maybe I'll have to run down to their showroom. Problem is, they always charge me full MSRP plus tax on all their stuff even though I'm local. Badlands always gives me a good "showroom" discount. Is the Full Curl even available yet?
I also emailed them for some info. Will post it when I get it. Very intriguing pack.
zrider2 if you really want a frame with a place for the bladderwe use a kelty cache and there is a pocket for a bladder. My brother also uses the frame for shed hunting and attaches a day pack to the top and says it is very comfy. We have hauled good loads with that frame and was very happy. The full curl set up looks very interesting I would like to see some pics and see how that thing does.
That hornhunter pack is very similar to what I use for a hauler. Mine is a carbon stay Gregory frame that I modified, it weighs just a shade over 4 lbs and can haul as much weight or bulk as you want to put on it.
Depending on who makes it for them and the quality / suspension that frame and a couple of silbags and a light daypack might be a pretty reasonable solution.
The rigs I made up when we hauled big bulky loads on a regular basis allowed us to clip a small but heavy bag on the front and it helped alot with balance. I don't know how much it would apply to hunting where the issue is weight more than bulk but for getting camp out with a load of meat I could see using it.
Yes, you can order the Horn Hunter off the website, but He (John) said to find a dealer for better pricing. I have not found one yet though. Anyone?
Got the barbarian guys. First thoughts Looks good, feels good. Filling it up with water and rice(for wieght) and putting some miles on it. I'll get some pictures up and let you all know how it goes. Just incase anybody forgot 18 WEEKS!!!! time to hammer down!
Anybody have a review on the Eberlestock J34( Just one) pack?
The horn hunter frame is very similar to the home modified gregory frame that I've used for the past few years when I need a hauler.
One of the benefits of using the frame/sil dry bags is being able to load the bags in the tent and get everything ready without bringing the pack frame inside as well.
If the suspension on this is good and the weight is right for $200 it looks like a pretty fair option. My frame weighs 4 1/4 lbs and with carbon fiber stays is heck for stout at load carrying.
Although I have a pretty neat camo bag that fits mine I usually use the sil bags as they are waterproof and much lighter, I have a few well placed small strings to tie my camo jacket over the load on the rare event I wanted it camo.
I am very anxious to get my hands on the hornhunter curl combo the idea of a 2000 cubic inch pack that can carry a heavy load of meat and antlers looks very appealing going to get one before deer and elk season but it will be hard to replace my old mainbeam xl which has been the greatest pack I have ever had
I'm going to call them today, and see if they have any in stock. Hopefully I'll be able to check it out today!
That hybrid curl frame looks real comfortable with a load I would like to have just the frame for meat packing .
I ordered the curl combo today, so not sure when it will arrive, but will post pics. I needed another pack like another hole in my head. elkreaper and websites are bad influences!
Looking forward to your pictures and reviews on it Larry alot of people interested and curious about the curl packs
I stopped by there today, but they were closed.
Gregory Z-65
This Z-65 is one of my favorite packs of all time. I have been using the Z off and on for a several years with great luck. It is more of a scouting pack for me, but could be used for a 3 day bivy hunt (depending on the person). I would say the max load (for comfort) on this pack would be in the 50# area, but the pack itself can handle much more.
In this pic, I have 2 days of food along with T-pod and spotter. My spotting scope case attaches to the side of the pack and I have no issue with it flopping around.
REI has the Gregory Z-65 on sale for $159 (this is the 09 model).
I use that z-55 for backpacking and agree with the comfort. I've always had good luck with the fit of gregory packs and really like mine at around 30 to 35 lbs which is a 3 plus day load for me but my optics consist of a small pair of Zeiss binos.
I used the Gregory Baltoro last year. I tied a Eberlestock X2 onto it to use for my daypack once back in. Seemed kind of ridiculous to take two packs...but just haven't found a "one pack" for this sort of situation. I'm thinking the Oregon Pack Works has solved that problem!
These pack reviews are great! I'm not going DIY this year(going guided) but am already planning for next year when I will be.
I started looking for a 6 day pack that will fit my 22.5" Torso. Most covered on these threads do not cover that high.
Any advice? Either hunting or regular backpacking
Thanks
DocT,
I have a long torso and have found that the badlands 4500 fits me well (with the large torso)I have a new one I dont use (extra pack)that Im going to sell. Ill shoot ya a pm telling you specks on the pack.
I will have the Badlands OX and the Crooked Horn High Country Extreme this week.
I'm doing a 2 night bivy into the high country this weekend, I was hoping to get some thoughts from everyone on what pack they would like me to bring and demo.
Badlands OX
Crooked Horn HCE
Please give me your thoughts and I will use the pack with the most votes.
I will also be testing out a few other products. The new pack cover from Day One Camouflage, Soto OD stove (at 11,000 feet) as well as a couple sets of bino's.
I would like to thank everyone for all the positive PM's, everyone has been a great help!

On a side note... What Bino's are you testing?? I got the soto stove last week. sweet stove!
I am currious about the Zen rays are they going to be the 10x43? look forward to your thoughts on those! On the thread about them they seemed to be pretty good from what was said on there. its hard to listen to people comparing them to binos like swaro's with the big price gap in those two. it just seems to be a strech that they could be that high of quality at that price?
I would love to see your review of the OX!! It looks like a pretty sweet pack. I love the idea of having both the pack frame and 3,000 cu in. bag in one.
Elkreaper on the Oregon Pack...those two aluminum bars on the frame...are they rigid or do they conform to the shape of your back? They look like they would bend some. How is the load lifters on that pack also?
When we hit 200-250 posts, can we go to part 3 ?
I vote for the OX.
If you guys would like me to do some of the pack reviews on their own threads, I have no prob with that.
Day One Camouflage pack cover
This is on the Gregory Z-65
I vote for a review of the ox.
Aron,
What is the weight on the pack cover? I have often thought about using something like that on my mountianeering packs...
Sharpstick
The large pack cover is about 4.5 oz's. This size would fit a full 75-80 liter pack.
I only use the cover after I have dropped all of my gear off at camp and then I just have day hunt stuff in my pack.
With that pack cover, I have died and gone to heaven.
Call Gary at Day One Camouflage if you have questions.
He can make them out of ASAT/Max-1/Predator evalution.
303-761-2070 is his #
Do you think a heavier fleece would be quieter?
I like that there are some pockets on the cover! I wish it was something more like the bucksuede so it would be more multi function.
He can make them out of bucksuede, I just listed the light fleece options. He can add waterproof liner to the light fleece as well.
I spoke with Gary and he said it could be made in buck suede - it would just be heavier.

For those who can't wait.
Well I finally got to test out my sacrifice pack yesterday after work.
The pack did great! I was surprised at the comfort level with my longer torso it still fit pretty dang well. I packed it with loads from 25-45 lbs and it was great for that lbs range. Like Elkreaper said after that range it starts going downhill in performance. But I got it knowing that and planed on using it for very light weight trips anyways. This will be my new scouting pack for sure!
Thanks for the great reviews Aron I am very happy with my pack... like I need another one in the first place!
Backcountry,
What do you think of the fabric as far as water repellency and noise? Do you think it may be noisy (compared to a 2200 or 2800, for instance) while slipping through the timber on a stalk?
I know you asked Backcountry, but I can tell you that it will not keep water out, you will need a pack cover for sure. It is louder then the 2200 or 2800
Barclay,
What Aron said…
I have a few other rain covers I think will fit but I am considering getting a bucksuede one from DAY ONE seems like that would help with the noise and keep it dry. Still this is a sweet pack!
I just got off the phoen with gary and ordered one fo those pack covers. Will report back once I get it.
Here is the Barbarian featherlight

Does anyone ever use a Kelty backpack for hunting purpose?
