Tom Miranda's World Class Bowhunting
General Topic

I read many threads about the quality (or lack thereof) of some of the outdoor TV shows. I generally don't contribute as I just reason if you don't like something you don't have to watch it.
Today I was watching the Tom Miranda episode about african bushbuck(?) hunting on the Outdoor Channel. Several times he mentioned that he was after a Pope & Young bushbuck...even going as far as decribing that it takes a buck with 12" horns to qualify. If I'm not mistaken isn't Pope & Young just for North American game animals? As a PY member for about 25 years, I'm pretty sure african game don't qualify.
I'm sure I'm just being a little too critical, but I'm amazed that would make it through the edit cuts from a 'world class' bowhunting show. Generally I like the show but this really caught my attention.
when he is on channel surf for anything else to watch
He's a, a, a,....(trying to think of a decent term) oh, will just leave it alone...8^)
i think this is one of the top 3-5 shows out there. at least he gets out of the backyard and hunts stuff most people are afraid to try for.
He's in the top 4 shows on my TV---
I watched the same show today along with every other archery hunting show on today. I enojy watching Tom's shows.
The African record book is named after Ben "Pondoro" Pope and Willie "M'Bogo" Young-Saxton and Art's cousins who moved to Africa when they were young.
Surprised you didn't know that...
;-)
he used to really get on my nerves, but in the last two to 3 years I have really enjoyed his adventures.
the ol'boy gets after it with a passion and intensity. If I had the budget, I would love to run the same trails.
Though I don't know the answer to your P&Y question.
As corney as his puchline is " a (insert dead species here) with a bow" I actually enjoy his show and wish it was on the sportsmans channel so I could see it more often.
He seems like a hardworking fella and as sincere as it gets, I kinda like that. I'd buy him a beer given the chance.
I know for a fact he is one of the most respected business men in the outdoor tv industry. That says alot about a person. They even showed him shooting that (stone?) big sheep in the ham and it fell over in view of the camera AND kept it positive. Nobody is perfect but I heard lots of good about him and not one bad thing.
Anyone who could make a living as a trapper knows their sh!t when it comes to understanding animals and how to take them.
He is a good hunter but doesn't shoot well enough to take some shots I have seen him take. Probably his sighting system. I am impressed with the game and where he hunts but his shooting I'm not.LH
i think miranda ranks right up there with wayne pocious(sp?), noel feather, and dan fitzgerald, among a few other that rank as "crocks"
Stringwacker, I'm with you. You would think someone of his position would have knowledge of who the Pope and Young organization is. If so, then he was disrespectful and misleading. I saw the same program several weeks ago. I sent him a message stating my disapproval. I did not get a response.
Pope & Young does not recognize African species, it is for NA game as everyone knows. SCI, Rowland/Ward, and others are measuring systems for African game.

What he said is that it was a P&Y "class" Bushbuck. By saying "class" he was refering to the fact that it was a record book african animal with a bow, not a P&Y animal. I believe he does know tha difference.
perhaps the correct comment or more comment would have been SCI gold, silver or bronze class animal. either way I think Tom is on the good guy list.
I ended up in a hunting camp with Tom a few years back - all I can say is he is a nice guy.
I kind of like his show because he will do some of the extreme hunts. He had a hunt in Canmore and made a nice shot on a sheep.
Seems like a good guy to me.Has good enthusiasm, down to earth, and I don't get the feel his show is one big advertisement for products.
So overall a good show as hunting shows go-though I've always said hunting and TV don't really mix and I will always believe that.
Well he's no Fred Eichler for enertainment but I do like his show better than most of the shows out there.
I met him once at an ATA show. He gave me a copy of his newest DVD for free. If I have my facts straight, I believe that he is trying to complete the NA29 and he has all of his animals on video. He started his Desert Bighorn Sheep bowhunt this Spring right after Ned Greer tagged his in Lareto. Last I heard, he did not tag one......I believe he's going back next year.
I believe that he made trapping videos long before he started to make hunting videos.....
I tend to like his shows, He gets out and does some more interesting hunts.
The misinformation on hunting shows is a pet peeve of mine. Most of these guys know alot less about what they are shooting at than the gear they are toting - not sure if it's just ignorance on the editing team's part, or the actual hunter, but if you do notice the difference, it gets annoying. No it's not Wild Kingdom, but they could do a little more to educate the viewer about what they are hunting.
A number of years ago I shot 2 bulls with a rifle on opening day in Wyoming. Don't ask me how or why:) We bring them in to the butcher, unload them off the truck and bring them inside. The guy on my left asks me how I did and I told him that I shot both bulls. He never asked me how or why, just said congratulations. It was Tom Miranda. He was Pronghorn hunting on the next ranch over and had shot a 14-15 inch animal. Seemed like a nice guy.
I don't know why people don't like Tom Miranda. I think he's got one of the best shows on hunting t.v.
I like Tom Miranda and I like his shows, but he was wrong in referring to African animals as P&Y trophies. It was not just a slip of the tongue, he did it several times.
I think some of you are just looking for a reason to snivel. He is a quality hunter, and knows the difference. Chip T. said it best. New topic this one is already old
I know one thing he has done that most do not know is his support of the Future of Hunting in Florida. When we had our kids expo at the Turner Youth Conservation Center, he handed out over $20,000 in free merchandise to kids. He really had the kids attention when he spoke on hunting as well. Truly a family first type of guy.
Top notch guy in my book.
But at least it was good to learn that there are only 4 species of spriral horned antelope in Africa. Right?
Given that I started the thread, I would like to make a few points. I don't know much about Tom Miranda and as I stated in the opening post, I generally like his show. I just thought the repeated reference of the African bushbuck in the context of a Pope & Young benchmark... was an oddity and was interested in hearing what others thought about it.
I don't see a great harm being done in any regard, though it does peak an interest in what he was thinking by referencing the trophy bushbuck that he seeked as 'a Pope & Young' class (or whatever) trophy. Just an oddity....nothing more or less.
I always liked Tom. I remember some of his earlier predator hunting videos and it is good to see him doing well. He has some amazing accomplishments with archery gear. The Africa stuff is getting old to me but he is not the only one doing them and it is just my own personal preference as to what I want to see. Not what everyone else wants to see. If I dont want to watch, I will watch something else. I do have his program DVR'd.
HE ALSO SAYS WATERBUCK WEIGH MORE THAN KUDU. WATERBUCK ARE A GREAT ANIMAL, AND STOCKY. bUT JUST WEIGH THE HEAD ADN HORNS OF ONE VERSUS THE OTHER? OR ASK THE PH CONSULT THE SCI RECROD BOOKS ON DESCRIPTION AND INFO ON EACH ANIMAL.
MIRANDA HAS DOEN A LOT OF GLOBAL HUNTING & TAKEN SOME GREAT GAME, BUT...... I FIND HIS NEED FOR 88 TO 90 PUND BOW ON MOST ANINALS AN UNNEEDED MACHO TREND..... ( LIKE 340 FEET PER SECOND AND HE IS NOT BEING VERY INFORMED ON DOING HIS DUE DILIGENCE PRIOR TO HIS WONDERFUL BOWHUNTS RESEARCH YOUR GAME PRIROR TO EACH HUNT. THAT IS HALF THE FUN
HAVE ALSO STOPPED EVEN GETTING THE OUTDOOR CHANNEL, AS MOST SHOW`S HUNTERS HAVE NOT TAKEN NEARLY THE # OF RECORD BOOK ANIMALS OR DIFFERENT SPECIES SOME OTHERS I KNOW HAVE..... AND MAINLY THEIR LAUGHING AND GIGGLING AFTER ARROWING AN ANIMAL IS VERY OFFENSIVE. ADN CELEBRATING EVEN BEFORE THEY KNOW OF A RECOVERY
WHEN THEY HAVE TAKEN OVER 500 ANIMALS WITH BOW AND 70 RECORD BOOK ANIMALS AND 50 DIFFERENT SPECIES, THEY "MAY" ACT LIKE THEY HAVE DONE IT BEFORE.
"What he said is that it was a P&Y "class" Bushbuck. By saying "class" he was refering to the fact that it was a record book african animal with a bow, not a P&Y animal."
NO, that is NOT what he said. That may have been something along the lines of what he said one of many references he made on the show. I too thought it was just a slip of the tongue the first time he said it, that SHOULD have been caught and removed in the editing process. However, he said it FOUR different times during the show. One of the times he even said exactly how many inches it took to make Pope & Young with a bushbuck. That is not a slip up. He clearly didn't seem to know what he was talking about.
While I do watch and enjoy his show, and have no doubt that he is likely the fine individual portrayed by you all above, the original poster was not saying he wasn't. I too found his multiple continued reference and detailed comments about what it takes to score a Pope & Young bushbuck ridiculous. I believe this show was actually aired quite some time ago. You would think they would either fix the references in the show or not re-run it anymore. I would think he would be embarrased.
Never met the man, but I know some regular Joe types who were in the same camp as him. They said Tom was very nice to them, didn't act like some celeb, and even gave them his e-mail address so they could jabber some more after getting home.
Tom Miranda, universally liked by those who have met him, and universally criticized by those he has not - and who have never themselves made a mistake.
Woody, mountains can be made out of mole hills, be careful giving this group a hill to start with. ;-)
Well said Matt. The reason I keep my VCR is just so I can watch my old Tom Miranda VHS videos. Still enjoy them more than anything on TV these days. They were great motivation when I first got into bowhunting and I still put one on to get pumped prior to chasing a new species. His poster from a decade ago still hangs in my trophy room!
I emailed Tom once to ask a question and he responded with an answer in a timely fashion. Seems like a well grounded bowhunter to me.
"..... and there he comes, right down the garden path.... " :)
"WHEN THEY HAVE TAKEN OVER 500 ANIMALS WITH BOW AND 70 RECORD BOOK ANIMALS AND 50 DIFFERENT SPECIES, THEY "MAY" ACT LIKE THEY HAVE DONE IT BEFORE."
Dang, You're tough. I hope that does not apply to us Average Joe Bowhunters. If so I am short 420 , 69, and either 43 or 47 depending if small game is allowed for the different species. Even if I hit the lottery today, I don't think I have enough time left on earth to reach those stats, but would still like to "act" like I have arrowed an animal before.
Aw to heck with it. I think I will just bowhunt for the fun of it.
;^)
"WHEN THEY HAVE TAKEN OVER 500 ANIMALS WITH BOW AND 70 RECORD BOOK ANIMALS AND 50 DIFFERENT SPECIES, THEY "MAY" ACT LIKE THEY HAVE DONE IT BEFORE."
toot toot Thats EP's horn blowing in case you wondered.
CAPS LOCK NOT ALWAYS NEEDED!!!
I enjoy Tom's shows and articles. Started reading his trapping articles back in the 80's and I think his shows are pretty good.
I just watched his show on a bighorn sheep hunt and i really enjoyed it and his name is pretty cool. Tom
Woody- You aren't really saying that you would not mind being, "Beyond the Lodge" with some of the ladies. Come on you can be honest with us:)
OK you made your point:) Now be really honest with me and tell me if the Golden Corral buffet is as good as it looks on the comercials. We don't have any up here in NJ.
Now I will look at the comercials with an entirely different perspective!
Woody - are you saying those girls are too girly?...8^)
Poor choice of word he used but I'm sure he is well aware African Game is not eligible for P&Y. As far as his show goes it is 10 times better than most out there. Good clear footage with exciting adventure hunts.
I enjoy this program. I think the diversity of the video footage as well as the quality is the best on tv.
I enjoy the diversity of game he hunts with a bow. I hunt whitetails and turkeys from September through January so I really prefer watching something different.
I don't personally know the guy, but lost all respect for him after I caught him, his camera man, and guide trespassing on my in-laws small family ranch while hunting Roosevelt elk in coastal Oregon.
The guide claimed he "got turned around"... I backtracked them them the next day and found they had walked the full 2 mile length of the ranch bottom road. In that distance there are three gates to open and close, and they had the gall to leave their garbage from a snack that they ate while sitting on a log in a creek bottom prairie across from an old orchard.
I know that Tom was at the mercy of the guide for huntable ground, but he still has the guide service listed as 5 stars on his website, and that is where my beef lies. I sure hope he enjoyed the calls and questioning from the state game police.
should have called the warden . ASAP did they kill any game on your property..
Yeah we had all kinds of proof, My brother-in-law picked them up in his truck on the property.
Here is how it went down.
I found three trespassers earlier that evening, while glassing, and hopped on my quad to go confront the unknown guys. I rode 15 min. to a vantage point right above where they were, and where I could see their exits and glassed for them.
Not being able to find them in the thick brush and dark timber pocket, I yelled to them, "I hope you guys have flashlights, cause I'm gonna be here 'till dark."
I never saw them again. But, Low and behold, an hour and a half later, in the dark... three guys come walking out, and my Brother-in-laws portion of the story starts.
My BIL was driving to his parents house when someone flashed him from the driveway ditch line. As he rolled to a stop the guide realizing that he had mistakenly flashed my BIL, not the pickup guide who has the exact same white diesel pickup, reluctantly accepted a ride two miles down the road where his aunt lived.
The guide told my BIL..."we got turned around" but didn't mention he was a guide, my BIL thought, well it happens, I'll give you a ride to your aunts. So the other two guys collected their "gear" an hopped in the back of the truck. After he dropped them off a few miles down the road, my BIL called me to tell me the story, suspicious after seeing the head guides truck coming in the road, and we started piecing the events together.
So after I got off of the phone I called the guide in charge of the outfit, the guy that was supposed to pick them up, and he said.. well yeah... my guide got lost and just came out down your ranch road. I asked how he got "lost" in a single creek drainage where you can see exactly where you are supposed to end up. He then said... you know what... you can F OFF!!! and hung up on me.
The next morning my BIL called the Oregon State Police, and we both talked to the officers multiple times over the next few days and only then did I find out who it was. The OSP officer said it would have been an uphill battle without picture proof, our word against theirs in court, and the best we could get was the guides license jerked for a year. He advised me not to press charges until we could get something substantial to get him shut down for good.
Funny thing is, it would have been just another trespasser that got away if they hadn't flashed my brother-in-law. Their "lost" story doesn't hold up to me because they walked within 100 yards of my house while I was home with the lights on. IF they actually were lost, why didn't they just swing in and ask for a ride to their truck or aunts house?
I sure would have liked to have been a fly on the wall in Tom Miranda's room when he got that call from the OSP.
And no they didn't kill anything, Just like all the other guided celebrities that come to this steep tangled brush-hole.

Just curious what was the report number that OSP took out on this incident to document the call?
bghunter, not sure, as I was not the guy that called them initially, they called me for additional info after my brother-in-law gave them my number. I could probably dig around and find some report numbers, but whats the point now?
So his "mis-spoke", meaning SCI. Not a big deal IMO

I was curious as under open records the report could be requested and reviewed so as to prove the incident.
The point now is anyone can say anything over the internet with no real facts to back it up. I am not saying you are not telling the truth, and I do not know Mr MIranda. However there are some on here that might or care to research this more and that information would be able to verify facts of the case.
bghunter-You are quite correct. Right now in my house there are 22 fellow Bowsiters who would love to get the records you mention and hang Tom Miranda! You can't be serious. I think we have more important things to do than follow up on this claim, true or false.
I have much better things to do and I myself would never take the time to look it up, as I have much better things to do with my time.
However since this thread had nothing to do about trespassing and a claim was brought up by someone in regards to this,I just thought I would mention it.
Tom Miranda is a personal friend of mine as I just had dinner with him in South Africa at his Safaris lodge. He's best described as an individual who is very personable and humble. To his credit he has the North American slam and is very close if not already in possession if the African slam. All with a bow and all on film. Try hunting with a bow along with a couple of videographers and accomplishing that feat. African animals are scored by 2 different associations. Those are SCI and Rowland Ward with the latter being more stringent in their scoring requirements. Believe me, Miranda of all people is familiar with these scoring associations. Regarding the Pope and Young comment, perhaps just a slip up from someone who has taken hundreds of animals from various continents. He is best described as one of the most successful bow hunters of all times.
"Tom Miranda, universally liked by those who have met him, and universally criticized by those he has not - and who have never themselves made a mistake. "
Yep, gotta love the internet. I only hunted with him once, but Tom seemed like a good guy.
I remember this thread from 7 years ago.
personnaly guided him for a chamois hunt last year very good hunter, very good man and very ethical for me as he told me, he is a pro and now bowhunting is a job for him, make a big difference when you are in the wild...but he is still a real hunting , very passionated Not agree with some about his shooting level: made good shoots with me
