Why did you pick this time frame. Is there any rutting activity yet?

From: RUGER1022
11-Oct-11
Fish , rut is 3 to 4 weeks off . But the deer are more predictable now as they pig out in preperation for the Rut . Plus the several times I hunted the rut in that area the antlers were busted up on many of the big bucks .

And its a heck of a lot warmer now for Bowhunters to do their thing .

11-Oct-11
not to mention Pat's plans to hunt Kansas during the rut...

Pat,

I really enjoy these hunts you do. That mountain goat adventure was beyond comprehension...you're truly a dedicated bow hunter. I tip my hat to you.

Two questions I have are regarding your equipment.

Why do you use full-length feathers? I see your roots go back to traditional days

And, do you use a string peep sight?

Good luck with this hunt and this year’s adventures.

Russell

PS. That video about the Worlds Greatest Tracker is a hoot. Priceless! Cherish your children, for they grow-up faster than we (often) want.

Pat just left for home and not a moment too soon, what a maroon that guy is - a real "Look at me, I'm so famous" kinda dude. Just funnin' ya: he's a good guy and hunter - and he gets most of my jokes so that's a bonus. One of the great things about hunting that seldom gets mentioned is the fun and humor that is a big part of a good trip - at least around here anyway. He hunts hard but likes to have fun also, the kind of client we like. Congrats to him on making a deadly shot on a great buck.

I never stated I was against baiting in my post. I just simply stated that I found it amusing that there where some that have been anti-baiting on this site before congratulating Pat..

Whackm are you telling me that bait is the only way people kill deer in Canada?

From: Rob Nye
13-Oct-11
We hunt with or without bait, according to client preference. About 10 days ago one of our archery clients killed a 150 buck that we patterned between a bedding and feeding area (alfalfa field). I built a natural ground blind (his seat was a treestand about a foot off the ground) 20 yards from the buck's travel route. The first day the wind was favorable he sat there, shot the buck and watched it go down. We also have success hunting scrape and rub lines and we set up stands for rattling and calling. Bait is not the only way to get a shot here but it can be effective and you will definitely see deer and often lots of them. A client this morning had 18 deer, six of them bucks, (130 class the biggest) within 15 yards of his groundblind. he loves to watch deer and hunting over bait is a lot of fun for him. It isn't a sure ticket to a big buck that some mistakenly think it is.

From: SteveB
13-Oct-11
Slim, no, that's not what he's saying...but he IS saying that in the early season that you will get quite bored on stand all day if it's not baited. Geez, how hard it that to understand or figure out?

Thanks steve.

I'll clarify for you all. I live in manitoba, and baiting isn't allowed. I had the good fortune to shoot my elk opening day. So I spent the rest of my time off chasing whitetails in country much like that around Rob Nyes area. I finally saw and shot a mature buck on day 17. Its a tough hunt!!! I know so many guys that give up after 4 days.

I'm sure if I could bait the number of encounters would have gone up, but its still not a sure thing. Pat didn't have 17 days to hunt, he had 6. He did what he was allowed to do by law to up the odds. I see no problem with that.

In defense of Pat , its very hard to judge antlers in Canada because of the big bodys . My Canadian bucks score 139 , 144 , 152 , and 168 . Its a learning process .

I'm one of the biggest anti-baiters on the site and have lost many stars over the years . BUT I have and will hunt over bait in Northern SK and Southwest Texas . Or you won't see many deer if any .

Here is what I`m getting by going off Pat`s picture..My hand across the top of the fingers measure 3 and 3/4 inches...so i`m using that as my guide..lol..I`m just doing this for fun but my original guess is close to what i`m getting by using my scale..

g1`s rh 5 inches.. lh 3 inches.. g2`s rh--9 inches.. lh-8 inches.. g3`s...both 10 inches.. g4 right side 3 inches.. mainbeams 23 inches each.. spread 19.. mass 32.. kicker on left side by base 2 inches.

145 gross is what I`m getting..Now C`mon Pat spill the beans before I put this on CATIA...he he

From: Sage Buffalo
16-Oct-11
David: Pat challenged us at the end of the hunt to guess the score.

From: David Alford
16-Oct-11
Your right he did, but I think my point still has merit. On the other hand, probably a lot of people would find it of minor importance. Even outfitters' websites may enthusiastically present decapitated deer or elk heads but few images of the country. I contacted one Canadian outfitter about that and his reply pretty much dismissed my thinking on the matter since I was the first person who wanted to see a lot of terrain/landscape pics...

16-Oct-11
David it sounds to me like you need to go more on a sight seeing trip and not a deer hunt. I have never heard of anyone that was going on a hunt more interested in the landscape then the deer quality.

From: travis@work
16-Oct-11
Lol...darn decapitated heads...just finished skinning one of those nasty things and threw it in the tanning solution...he he..must be getting close to Halloween

From: BuckSlayer
16-Oct-11
I know what you're saying David. I like a sceanic setting when I hunt. It actually makes or breaks it for me. Pats Sask hunt clearly was a beautiful setting. Part of the whole package is a remote peaceful setting not surrounded by houses or traffic. And then a big buck is the cherry on the cake!

From: David Alford
16-Oct-11
Yes, Pat. Quite a fe of the Canadian outfitters have pic after pic of a bunch of cutoff deer heads and that may not be a turn off to you but it it is to me, especially when thery have nothing to show the type or quality of the land where the hunts take place. I find it hard to believe the landscape and habitat is not of primary interest.

Hardcore, you just heard of one then. I make no apologies for focusing on hunting good country. Good country usually produces the best game anyway. I don't think this is absurd, Ortega Gasset wrote about it as have many of our better contemporary writers. And I'm not a wannabe bowhunter; it's because of my dedication that I am a hunter of good country.

Anyway, Pat I don't mean to hijack this thread. I wanted to compliment Rob on having acess to some great habitat some of which I could see in your video. Rob and i almost put together a hunt a few yrs. ago and may still someday.
