A non hunter friend of mine asked what a royal elk was. I had never heard that term before. Can anyone help?
As I remember an imperial was a 7 point bull. Haven't heard these terms for quite a while.
A royal is a 6-point bull.
I remember reading once that a 6-point is called a royal, a 7-point is an imperial, and an 8-point is a monarch. I have lived and hunted in elk country my whole life and don't actually know anyone who uses those terms however.
Thanks, my friend was in Rocky Mountain National Park and a ranger there used the term.
I think they are only found in Great Britain.
"So is my 6x7 called a Royial ?"
I think considering all the years it took you to get him it's more likely called a "Miracle".
lol!
Sorry, couldn't resist. I actually missed the elk curse this year. I was hoping Charlie would string it out a bit this year trying to take his first elk, but noooo, he had to go and get it done right off! What fun is that?
As for the topic of this thread, though, I think these names were originally used to refer to red deer in Europe, more so than our elk. But I could be wrong.
I answered this for you over a month ago! You never believe me!
Slacker!
Wages, now that was funny!
7x6 is the only Royal aproved by SCI!
Ditto what Rex said. Same for Charlie. Name stays the same for the in betweens until the the next level is met.
Wages I hear Pats wife was the one that made him start filming his hunts to prove where he was going every September, disappearing for weeks on end, and spending thousands, after which he would come home all broken and tired! Hmmm!
Pat, i think its a royail with cheese....
haha! cause of the metric system.
6 X 6 = Royal
7 X 7 = Imperial
8 X 8 = Monarch.
It typically describes "typical" (symetrical) elk antlers.
Wages - good stuff. Pat, this is what you need to shoot for next. Anyone can get a 6............ :)
I believe it has to do with symetrical typical bulls only. Like a straight 6, 7 or 8.
