Highest scoring 5 x 5
Elk

Just curious. Does anyone know what the current record would be for a 5 x 5, if there is such a thing? A friend of mine took a 5x5 a few years ago from Utah that taped out at 345. Impressive!!
IMO a big 5 that exceeds 300 is more impressive than a 340 6 pt.
Big Dan I think has a mega 5by5 along with many other big bulls !!
That is an impressive 5x5. I have a buddy who shot a 315 gross 4x4. The frame on that bull is equivalent to many Booners....sounds like your buddies bull is too.
I thought I saw an article of one within the last 5 years that went close to 400"... Wish I could remember.
Years ago at a RMEF banquet in Phx they had a judging contest and there was a 375 incher.

Those big 5 x5's are impressive when you see one. We found a 5 x 5 in unit 9 Az that someone had gut shot and lost. We could barely stand the stink but had to put a tape on it- 340ish, awesome animal.
Its like one of those big 8 whitetails....you think you want a ten until you see one of those big 8's.
The highest scoring 5x5 listed in the latest edition of P&Y is 337 6/8.
I know it's BnC, but there have been net 5x5 elk taken over 375.
Maybe somebody has a book?
I spent 2 days in company of a monster 5x5 in the breaks one year. Nothing higher than low sage. Got within 50 several times, but that's well outside my range.
Just for reference this bull goes in the 340s as a six by. Since he had such small 5ths I scored him as a 5x5 just for fun. Take out about 6 inches for his 5ths and 2 circumference measurements and he goes 328 as a 5.
Rick M, why would you take out 2 circumference measurements. You get 4 circumference measurements no matter what (even on a spike bull).
If you remove the 5ths you lose the circumference measurement that you had between the 4th and 5th
no you don't. you still get 4 circ. not matter what.
No wonder some of these animals score so high:) Where would I take the 4th circumference at the smallest point on the main beem if there is no 5th?
Straight from the P&Y score sheet: H-4. Circumference at Smallest Place Between Fourth and Fifth Points.
Regardless you get my point.
Actually, if the G-5 is not present, the H-4 is taken half way between the G-4 and the tip of the main beam. Ed
Rick, You go half way from the fourth to the end of the main beam and take the measurement there.

Ah so that is what happens when I start lopping off little 5ths:) Well then, lets call it a 330 something 5x5 since I am not getting the ladder out to measure them! Thanks guys.
Here's the biggest 5x I've ever seen. Shot by a friend. Don't know the score, but I would guess it is in the 350's at least. The 5ths are touching the wall, and you can tell this was an old bull. Tasted like one too, because he wasn't very good table fare if I remember right (was like eating an old saddle bag!).
never2sharp, My only elk mount came on a rifle hunt in Idaho, in the "Frank Curch Wilderness" back in "97". I picked him up at the taxi. in Dillon ,Mt. in the fall of "97" He was dwarfed by a "WIDE" 5 X 5 taken in the "Missouri Breaks" region. I wish thay had put the hawg next to some other guys bull! He made me think I had chosen poorly ($600) to have my 6x5 mounted. Once on the east side off the Mississippi my bull looked much better....they always do! The grand kids love Pa Paw's bull!

I had a 5x5 come through my taxidermy shop 2 years ago that gross scored 387 (maybe it was 383). It was a free-range Utah bull. Crazy Mass, crazy length. Would have been a 400" bull with G5s. Best mass I have ever seen on a bull.
I wish I could tell you I killed this elk, but unfortunately I found him dead. While not in the Misery Breaks, its close.
I never scored it, but it's in the 340 range.
While it's actually a 5x6, the 6th is only about 1.5 inches long.
As Rock said there are always 4 circumference measurements on each side no matter what size the rack is!

Louis, I think Danny's Nevada bull was a 5x5, big bull. It was officially scored and entered but I forget what it was, well into the 300's though. I think he took it on his magical mystery tour, the same year he drew AZ and killed his 400 bull, 05 or so? Killed 3 P&Y bulls in 3 states in like 5 or 6 days of hunting. The "little" MT bull was like 280 or something? One thing to draw the tags, another to do that with them..... good grief....
Blacktail Bob's cabin must not have internet.... =D
Thanks guys. Love the photo's. I will try and post a picture of his 345.
Charkbait, great shot, what broadhead were you using?
montec, that was the exit, entered last rib...aim for the opposite shoulder right? 15 yd stalk while raking and roaring, needed new drawyers after that...
looks like it worked fine to me did he go far
Charkbait,
GREAT bull, that is a super photo and looks like a darned good shot to boot!
