ND Turkeys for Jade and I

Jade and I got lucky yesterday in Western ND. We set up blind Saturday morning, guessing on the roost site by past experience. We had one gobbler come in behinds us to 25 yards, but wouldn't come to the decoys. He drummed for about 5 minutes before heading back down the draw and then west. We waited 1/2 hour to see if anything else would swing by, but the gobbles kept getting further away. I decided to take a chance, grab a jake and a hen decoy and risk pushing them out by getting closer. We sneaked along the bottom of the draw until we found a meadow opening to set up. We heard gobbles to the west, so I threw together a quick natural blind for Jade, set up the decoys and hid in the bottom and started to call. Immediately, we got a gobble back and he was headed our way. He came thundering into the decoys, spitting and drumming all the way in. He made it to 10 yards, then Jade drew back and made an awesome shot-he only ran 20 yards and was down. Jade shot his first turkey with a bow!!!!!

We took the trophy photos and heard gobbling to the West the entire time. I knew then that we were in the route to the main roost area. We set up a blind and left to have lunch. I came back by myself around 2, to see what was going on and possibly catch a nap in the beautiful weather! I sat down in the blind and made a series of yelps with a box call and a gobble erupted from within 100 yards in the deep ravine. I switched to a slate call and made another series of calls-he then showed himself and came down the exact same path from the top of the ravine to the meadow, spitting and drumming the entire way! I drew back, and bang....my arrow fell off the string!!!! I let up, while he got to about 11 yards and had the composure to get the arrow back on the string. He was about to give my full body Dakota jake a butt kicking, so I drew back and released. I made a great shot after all of that and he only went about 30 yards before expiring. Two turkeys in the exact same spot, within hours of each other! It was an amazing day,and neither of us will ever forget it. Check the link above for the GoPro footage on Youtube.

It has now been 15 months since Jade's brain surgery and his passion for the outdoors, hunting and archery continue to grow. He is back to about 95% of the kid we knew before, having only slight memory problems. I'm so proud of him and his accomplishments.
