Can someone dumb down the basics of starting/using the northern rockies SD micro disk from HuntingGPSmaps.com
I got it, registered it and checked for updates (none).
Now I load it into my garmin dakota 20. I have to take out my old micro disk - thus I loose the info on there. Can I then download it into Garmin Base camp? If yes how?
Does this disk have room to load my own maps, waypoints etc? Can I take only part of the map from basecamp and install it on my old chip?
Thanks!
There are all kinds of tutorials on their website telling you how to do that kind of stuff with the GPS, as well as interfacing the GPS with your computer for uploading and downloading information.
You can pull all the info off your old sd card and put it on the new one. You will/may need to create the folders for the other data depending what's on the new sd card.
Your map(s) will be in the "garmin" folder on the new sd card. You can add all the maps your sd card can hold.
I have a Garmin Oregon 450 with Hunting Maps Colorado chip. Can I somehow add satellite imagery to this??
These are the reasons I buy the downloadable versions of their sofware. You load what you want on your GPS when you want it. I load the huntinggps maps, as well as the garmin 24k and 100k (ish) topo maps on one chip and can use them all at once.
Do you still have to get a new chip to update the software when updates come out? If you write over the huntinggps chip with basecamp or whatever is it still lost for good?
You can add sat imagery to any of the newer units but it's restricted in size. To get good coverage sat imagery you need to hack the bios of the gps then use a cpl different programs to download the imagery as tiled jpg then convert to jnx for copying to the gps. Birdseye itself is a copywrited mtl so you would be using some of the imagery available elsewhere. You need a program that actually downloads the imagery to your pc such as topofusion or similar. You can do the same procedure with higher quality topo map files also.
The above is not a task for the novice. You can brick the handheld if you pooch the procedure.
If you have a purchased sd card that doesn't show in basecamp I would call the supplier. If it's a card you made there is a 3rd party app that will make the maps basecamp readable.

I had this same problem, I got in contact with their customer service and they let me trade in my chip for the DL. When you save waypoints or birdseye it saves onto your GPS not the chip. Also if you erase anything onXmaps will replace the chip. I have been a headache for them in the past!
Put the sd card in an adapter, in the pc, and basecamp will save all your data to the card. You can also back up that data at that point by just copying off the card and dropping it to a dvd or external usb drive.
