Hey everyone,
Its been a while since I have been on. Love this site though. Some of my favorite threads of old wear pics of elk camps and backpacks. I wont be heading out to the mountains this year and missing the views. The Alaknak thread got me remembering all the great photos hunters posted up of their camps. Can we get a new thread going?
Not a real good picture of camp but here you go.
Wrong picture. My fault. Here's the right one.
Changed a few things but its still my old elk camp
Hey BigDan,
Would be interested in seeing your camp before you built the cabin.
Home Sweet Home for around 7 Days last Season

This was the old one I used before I built the cabin
Old Goat, ur kinda a hairy fellow!
Bigdan, that lat pic looks like a progressive insurance ad!!
here is a fairly recent one.
OK...this wasn't taken in camp. Or in elk country. In fact, it was taken in our back garden...in England.
But I AM planning my first elk trip...and pitching this tent in the elk woods will be just the start of the adventure....
Idaho 2012 the morning after a successful double
Barty, I can't wait to hear about your elk hunting trip next year.
Montana 2007
Block Management land near the Musselshell River. Temps hit 103 the first week of September.
I was camp jack/cook for son and 2 nephews that year.
Northern NM. and a Davis tent.

Here is mine, not nearly as pretty as most places!!!
2013 NM as well just couldn't get it all in one photograph.
Going from that one pic of big Dans trailer, side by side and boat- then seeing that tarp in the next pic is a dramatic shift!
Here is the other pic [2 total] I took when it wasn't raining last year-geez-
the 2 track out of my camp
Bowhntr- is that an old Boy Scout tent in that 2009 pic?
Thanks Midwest...if not '15, then '16 [certainly before my intended turns 40...so we've three years left!!]
Honestly do not know it was borrowed from a friend. Worked good though.
New camp for this year and no tag..... But Still having fun in the woods
Looking lightweight and ultra-fast CCovey
Great thread! :)
Barty- that looks like a pretty big tent! You backpacking? If so, how much does she weigh?
Montana 2011 great memories! :)
This is what it looked like on my back. ;-)
Last year I had this (look really close).
Thats the goal Barty! I will say im glad i brought the pack tarp during those nasty storms we had last year in CO. Being locked down in that thing is no fun if its more than an hour or two.
Rutnut...tent is a Vaude Terra Trio three person; I figured on there being extra room with two people plus gear. Weighs in at a fraction over 6lbs [2.74kg = 6.028lb]
Here's 2010 in NM. For some reason I didn't take a good pic last year in WY.
I do have a Rab bivi if I was going to go fast n light
Barty- that explains it. Thought the 3 man was just for you!
I'll be using this set up again this year, only in the Gila instead of the Kaibab.
It depends on the tag I draw but this is one camp. I don't have much time to take pictures when tent camping as the horses usually need tending.
2012...did not get to go last year.
2011...looks alot like 2012
Highlander, looks a lot like my Colorado '08 camp above! lol
This was my elk camp before I had my camper with the atv deck.
Wow this thread is REALLY making me regret missing this season! We had an incredible time at this camp last year!
Here's dad at base camp 2013. We'll have a real base camp tent this year :)
Holy crap, Idyll....did one of you sleep in the Lezbaru? lol
Hey , Big Dan how did you ever back that rig up ? must of took some practice.
Never tried always went foward
X2 Bigdan........my Grandpa always told me...it doesn't matter what's behind you...it's what's ahead that really matters. (Nice rig you had there).

Latest Photo of Montana Elk Camp with all the rock work done.
Bigdan, Do you have a pic of the view from that porch?
Midwest here is three I just took at 8:30 pm
Another looking towards I Missouri River
Looking into antelope country
Colorado last year. Ate well. Elk and wild chanterelle mushrooms.
That was one of the few days we weren't under the tarp eating. Lots of rain Sept 7-15
Here's ours. The only sunny day we had....lol
Pretty simple most of the time..
How close are you guys setting up camp to the area you hunt? Maybe I should ask how close do you dare setup camp to avoid pushing the elk out?
"How close are you guys setting up camp to the area you hunt? Maybe I should ask how close do you dare setup camp to avoid pushing the elk out?"
That depends on how loud you snore. I still insist my dad never sleeps within 8 miles of any elk we are trying to hunt. But my camps often vary with the area I'm hunting and the type of camp I'm setting up. If I'm using my bigger alaknak I'm usually about 1-3 miles ( a quick quad ride or good morning hike) away from where I'm hunting. If I'm backpacking my camp in I've set up as close as 400 yds or so from where the elk were feeding that night. I usually like to be a little farther but have done this quite a few times and it seems to work out okay. Just gotta be a little more aware of what the wind/thermals are doing and what they are gonna do and keep downwind of them. If I stay fairly quiet and do this it doesn't seem to bother them too much.
Thanks Bullhunter, I mainly was wondering about the bivy setup. I can see where one would need to back away a bit to avoid spooking the elk.
2009, No longer available - OTC Co. Public Land - was a good deal and a great option on years when I could not draw a LE hunt. Cabins have Gas, Electric, hot water, and Wi-Fi! Short walk to Nat. Forest right from the camp! Have yet to find a better arrangement.
LaGriz
Wy 2008
Cabin was a screaming deal! $40 per night and included AM coffee and a full supper with unlimited soup and salad. Room had temperpedic memory foam mattress. The hunting was poor -little elk sign -too much Griz and wolf sign! I hunted like a pu#*#! Don't like being followed or stalked by bears. Wolves howling had my neck hair standing up. Limited by policys (wilderness off limits to NR with out a guide) I did get 30 yds from 9 Sheep one day. On two occasions had bull moose at close range. Also, I saw my first free range Bison while in the National Forest! BOO COO elk in Teton Park where I could not hunt. I came up with my handle because of my discomfort with so many bears.
LaGriz
LaGriz was that one of the cabins on the Poma ranch?
Montana Sept 2012 about 6 miles in from the trailhead.
