I am going to be heading to WY late September this year. My friend and I are open on our dates but we are looking right now at hunting around 9/20-9/26. We are planning to decoy and possibly hunt water holes if it is dry. By this time antelope will be rutting fairly well from my understanding. My question is....when is actually the best time to decoy? Would pre rut be better like for Whitetais or is there another preferred time.
Crawl or use contours to get within 80 yds or so...then "flash" the decoy. Get ready because they may run in quickly. If they hold their ground, you can try to approach, but do not move directly at the buck, work toward him very slowly in a big circle.
Take your time...don't push it.
With two guys, it's easier (a decoy guy and a shooter)
Late September has worked well for me. I use "BE THE DECOY" & have been successful the two years that I have used the decoy. Hands free and easy to use.
Decoying is a definite possibility during the last couple weeks of Sept. One thing to consider is many Wyo rifle antelope hunts open in mid Sept...so be aware...could be a little dangerous! Also, antelope can get pretty wild and wound up once the rifle season opens.
