A good friend has shot through several elk with his father's 45 year old Wing recurve at 50 pounds with 500 grain arrows tipped with a sharp COC two blade. His bow is well tuned and so is his shot placement! He has inspired me over the years with his commitment to his craft. Shoot straight and good luck!

My hat is off to you guys who get it done with trad gear. I like to play with my Red Wing Hunter, but haven't hunted with it yet. Good luck to all of you !
This is cool, hope some other guys post some photos.
53# @ 27" Shrew TD longbow, 175 gr. VPAs, 540 gr total arrow wt., complete pass thru on this bull.
Trust me if I quit screwing up easy shots and get an elk I'll be posting pics all up in here, I don't care if it's a white tail thread!
Elk always look better with a bow lying against them....but they look even better with a recurve or long bow lying against them!
oldgoat or oldknuckledragger? 32" draw? Dang. And glad to see no girly bows listed like you'll see on leatherwall (40#@29" shooting a 650 gr arrow will kill anything that walks comments)
Good luck men!
I think elk look best with a fork, knife, and baked potatoe next to them!
Blacktail Elite 60# @ 29" Douglas Fir shafts footed with Wenge, 125 gr. Woodsman Elite
For years I have been using a BW MAIII, 60ins. 60lbs@27. but for the last two years I have switched to a Schafer Silvertip, 60ins.58lbs@27. I have been using XX75 2117s,28.5ins long with 125gr. two blade Zwickeys. They are all aroung 575grs. in wt. I also carry cedars topped with glue on Zwickeys, same length and they weigh between 590 and 600grs. They have worked well and I hope to get another chance this year...two weeks and counting.
Mike
For you guys who like the eye candy, here's last year's elk. And To keep with the thread, its the exact same set up as this year; this would make three years in a row using the exact same bow head and arrow... Last year I had to refletch. but I've decided to keep letting this bow bat first as long as she shoots clean through things.
More pictures guys! Good luck and shoot straight

Last year's bull with the same setup. Seems to work ok.
Even dink bulls like Jaq gets look good with a recurve lying on them. ;-)
Willieboat, that bull would be one of your cull bulls hanging in the shed... I've seen your AZ bull, remember?
;-)
Robertson Wolfer, 52@28. Cedar arrows with bear razors. Heading out on Saturday to colorado.
Great photo jaquomo!
And I love the dark woods in that Robertson.

Wow some great bows & Elk, my hats off to you traditional bow hunters! Good luck this year!
How many of you dull the finish on your bows (bow dull, tape, etc..) before hunting? I never used to, but when I was in Australia being filmed for a TV show I discovered that my bow, with a matte gloss finish, was reflecting the sun like a signal mirror and spooking red deer I never knew could see me otherwise. Now I spray the limbs with brown bow dull before the season.
Not as big as the others posted but my first with my longbow. 55lbs at 30.5" draw with 650 gr goltip 7595 tradtionals with 50gr insert and 125 gr stingers.
Lou, I have all my bows made in a flat finish, not glossy or semi glossy. Rob Lee did an excellent job on my last Bob Lee recurve, flat black riser and flat black limbs. And even though snake skins are pretty on a bow, once finished, they sure do shine in the sunlight. Seen too many catch the sun just right and give off glare.
Only have killed 3 and this one was at 30yrds '' trotting''. Was the 8th bull I called in that evening!
58Lb @27" Black Widow, 605 grain Carbon Express 250 with a two blade Zwickey.
I hope I figured out how to post my elk pic. Dwyer Endeavor longbow, Wyoming spike.
I've never been so happy taking a young runt of a species. Last day, late afternoon. After 4 elk-less seasons.
This thread is a good one! Hope to see more pics. good luck to you guys this season.
Bob Lee Signature take down recurve with snake skin limbs, 54# at 28", 4 arrow quiver, 29" Gold Tip four fletch arrows, with 100 gr insert, and 175 Grizzly broadheads for a total of 575 grains. One elk with the recurve didn't go far. I went the last two years in a row, but not this year. Wish I could.
Lou, I opted for the "bow camo" stretchy limb covers this year. I noticed getting busted and think it was due to the my bows shiny finish.
Look forward to your bull pics for this year!
Wayne
I had limb covers over mine too last year. Took them off for the picture.
Great thread guys. Any elk with a bow is a trophy - To get one with traditional equipment is unbelievable.
Congrats to all of you.
Sapcut... Love that bow! What woods?
Bowme2, The first photo with back pack is osage riser with Kingwood limbs. The photo with elk is same osage riser with osage limbs.
Heading to Colorado on Sept 4th. Using my 57lb Assenheimer recurve gold tip 55/75 traditional shaft with big 200 grain snuffer.
Killed with a BW longbow and a Abowyer wapiti head. I have also taken 2 cows. Love elk hunting!
Nice elk Steve! These images really get the juices flowing.
Set up for this elk was a Toelke Whip longbow at 54# at 26" draw length. 2 blade Magnus on a Carbon Express Heritage 150 for a total weight of 600 grains. New set up is a 53 lb Black Canyon recurve with 175 grain Grizzly single bevel with CE Heritage for 590 grain total.
65# Black Widow PSA III with 2 blade Eclipse on weighted GoldTips, 650 grains Total
Another with...65# Black Widow PSA III with 2 blade Eclipse on weighted GoldTips, 650 grains Total
Another with...65# Black Widow PSA III with 2 blade Eclipse on weighted GoldTips, 650 grains Total
My Buddy's bull last season. Taken with 56# PSA X Black Widow with GoldTip weighted at 595 grains total, with Magnus 2 blade head.
Yellowstone Longbow, 60#@26", CT Rihno arrow with Snuffer head.
A&H longbow, 66# @30in. Footed gold tip kinetic 200's with a 300 gr VPA 3 blade. Probably overkill on the arrow weight but this is the same setup I shot for waterbuffalo and don't really want to change back last min.
Overkill? I see your mouth moving but have no idea what you're talking about...
To all those guys posting trophy pics, what is your shot distance?
I'm going with my black widow this year. Confident that if one gets within 30 yards I will make a good shot. Was hoping to extend that range but the consistency isn't quite there.
My shot on the bull in the photo was 22 yards. Of the almost 3 dozen I've killed, the shot distances varied from 3 yards to 38.
Man I gotta get back state side for another elk season soon. I hunted CO in 2009 and it was 12 days I'll never forget soon... Trouble is I've booked myself in for Africa next year and BC again the following year for bears. Yeh, a nice problem to have I guess but there is nothing like hitting the wilderness, bow in hand and hearing the elk call. Stick bow in hand just makes it all that more special.
Driving that Toyota to the trail head Sapcut? :')
Al, although it would be very convenient once on the moutain, the Land Cruiser won't make the trip this time.
Did you ever get the Defender?
Jaquomo,
Out of curiousity, what is your draw length and do you know the approx weight of your finished arrows including broadheads?
What, no Stalkers?
This is a way cool thread!
My draw length is 28" and my arrow package lately is around 460 grains. My bow is tuned for the absolute best arrow flight possible and I sharpen the trocar tips on the Muzzys so they are effectively COC.
Makes me want to retire the compound and got trad!!! Great pics guys!!
My distances and numbers mirror jaquomo. The vast majority are well within 25, but there's been a few flyers. I've only shot 17 though with a trad bow, so I've got some catching up to do!
Good luck guys!
Richie, it's on its way mate. The fun part now will be adding on all the extras I'll need/want to hit the bush!
Yea that sounds like lots of fun mate. (different accent if you can't tell)
It was done for thousands of years before the compound, or the rifle for that matter of fact, came around.
BTW, I shot clean through a Kudu with a 50 lb. recurve and a 550 gr. arrow with a Magnus Buzz Cut on the front.
TBB
"Makes me want to retire the compound and got trad!!! Great pics guys!!"
^^^^^ This! Awesome pics and great trophies! Congrats
54" 54# Rivers Edge recurve and 58" 54# Bob Lee longbow; VPA 3 blade bhs.
Nicely done fellas! Kelley RC #60 at my draw length, carbon express heritage 250, 250grn eclipse on the business end..... Other go to is a #63 pronghorn same arrow and head...
This is better than any thread you would see on Leatherwall, all they do there is fight about how you should shoot........
Great Pics, I am going to learn how to post a picture.....
Checkmate Falcon 54# CE arrows and Bear Razorheads Thunderhorn quiver
That's no lie razorhead! They would be screaming about these draw weights too!
Where does one find 'bow dull' that some of you mentioned? Water proof and safe for the finish I assume?
Picked up a Howard Hill Cheetah last winter That I will be putting to work here shortly. It is about 57# at my 27" draw launching 580 grain Beman Classics with TuffHeads and Grizzlies.
I just put camo face makeup on my bow, cleans off with soap and warm water after season is over.

50@29" Hoyt excel with tradtech limbs shooting a 510 grain GT 75/95 with a 50 grain brass insert and zwickey eskilite broadhead, 25 yards. Opening Day Colorado 2014
Have to stop reading this post. Real men with real bows ( like I used to shoot ) make me feel inadequate ! Great pics!
