P&Y Hippocracy!

As a member of P&Y, I am receiving a free subscription to Bowhunting World. I just received my third issue today and let me tell you, I wouldn't wipe my own a$$ with this magazine. It might as well be called Crossbow Hunting World. Articles and tons of advertisements for crossbows. Why would P&Y endorse this crap?
Oh, that's why we get it? I wondered about that. Those dang hippos allowing us to have free magazines! I mean throwing the dang free magazine away or giving it to someone who might actually enjoy it is just TOO painful!
Don't be a hater. Lol, at least it ain't a firearm! Mike
Pat, P&Y sent out a notification about three months ago.
Why get that worked up over a magazine? You don't have to read it you know. Maybe feed it to the Hippos.
I got an email from them stating as a member I would get a free issue. Looks like an entire subscription.
Mine goes directly in the trash......
looked like all the rest of the magazines to me....one big advertisement.
This months was extra bad for advertisements...
Pats Right P&Y been the lone destining voice on the issue.
I have to agree with the OP that it does stink of hypocrisy on their part...lambasting it while holding out their hands for advertising dollars.
The crossbow debate is a hard row to hoe. while I am for their use in anything other then an archery season its a hard line to take, with the opposition painting you as as an elitist, anti children, geriatric hating SOB .....
I noticed the same thing though I like to call the situation 'ironic' in that on one hand P&Y has a strong record of opposing crossbows and on the other hand sends a magazine to members that spews the pro-crossbow propaganda in it's ad content.
I understand that it was just an attempt to build value with the membership...something that I can applaud P&Y for. That said, this whole idea might should have been thought through a little more.
Like another poster said earlier, I just throw mine in the trash as soon as I get it out of the mail box. I seriously thought about sending P&Y an email to see if I could get off the mailing list for the magazine. No use for someone to waste postage.
I was wondering why I was getting it also. Yes, must be a subscription and not just one issue since I have received 3 so far.
Every P&Y member now receives a subscription to Bowhunting World. Mine went in the trash almost immediately.
Next, xbowsite.com. It's coming.
I think I have now received the third copy. I treat it a part of the stack of junk mail I receive. It goes straight to the recycle ben.
wait a second Charlie.... I can't see the forest..... too many trees in the way.....
I contacted the P&Y board about this very thing and received a reply from the Pres. He said members could "opt out" of receiving this rag. I never saw anything in print about "opting out". The thing that really set me off was the last page article in the Oct. 2014 issue. The only reason for that article is to bash P&Y! Bowhunting World is supposed to be a corporate sponsor. P&Y doesn't need sponsors like this.
Thanks Charlie. Couldn't have said it better. The things some folks get worked up over.
Xbows is where the new money is. Big ad dollars to get hunters to buy and use and with more and more states allowing them it's going to only get worse.
Oops- thought this thread was started by TBM based on the misspelling !!!! Sorry
I am pleased with the magazine- read what I want to and ignore the rest. Always enjoy Miranda's writings.
Hippo-cracy... You never want to see a hippo mad.
I took a day off from elk hunting to attend a good friend's funeral (after my wife found my camp from my SPOT coordinates), check in to the Bowsite, and find people bitching about free magazines and still arguing over arrow-broadhead choices.
Man, some of you guys have your heads screwed on sideways. Look in the mirror and get your priorities straightened out, for goodness sake.
I was kind'a wondering when I had subscribed to the magazine. I saved up all of this years magazines to read in the antelope blind. But I only made it through Mike Eastmans "Hunting Trophy Antelope" before getting my goat.
So I haven't read "Bowhunting" yet. But my buddy, who is a very successful, dedicated, die-hard bow only guy loved it and was going to get a subscription.
But it's like everything else in my daily life, I'll just enjoy the good and ignore the bad.
You guys are unreal...free mag and complaints. I don't get it.
If you don't like it, don't read it. If you don't like PY's approach then get involved and make a difference.
Scott
I never read a single archery magazine, book of how to crap, half the fun is learning on my own. plus if you go to grociery store you can read it for free. Every once in a while someone here says some thing usefull. as for xbows and muzzle loaders, trash. Its a bought time they start a spear season, for real men
P&Y has sure changed....last election brought about 'new stuff' ..... but it is going to get 'worse' for sure ... but what are we going to do? I wish Glenn St.Charles was still around.....I miss our 'talks' about "stuff" like this .....
I for one have no desire to shoot a crossbow. One of my true fears in life is that one day I will be unable to pull and shoot a vertical bow back. Crossbow hunting is not bowhunting but I think it is great that people have the option of using them just like muzzleloaders and centerfire rifles. They have crossbow season here in KY and I have yet to see any issue at all with them.
Some guys actually complain about youth seasons as they sometimes get prime dates. To me that is the epitome of jealousy....complaining about crossbows is almost as bad.
Yep, there is nothing like holding one of these 85% letoff compound bows in our hands . . . . .
. . . lamenting the days of Archery old . . . .
. . . . . all the while cursing the Crossbow, and claiming to be archery pure, and not a hypocrite . . . . . .
Pop this one into the top 10 list of dumbest threads ever...
Ah, who cares. Gives me something to read on the plane...even if it sucks beats most anything else...
I often times ponder if it will be realized that we'll be defeated through divide and conquer. I would tend to think that your time would be better well spent finding out what movie stars and singers and companies you shouldn't be supporting. That list is long. But Oh no, end support for something that supports you. Some of you girls need to grow up and realize we're in the fight of our lives here. Figure out who the enemy really is.
Thanks for the reality check, Charlie!
Oh how I love crossbows! I think we all need one...especially kids and teenagers so we can see more sights like this (picture taken in my front yard)...nice field tip on that bolt. *smh*
Bass2xs,
Cannot you think for yourself?
A slob hunter is a slob hunter with any weapon.
Here is a good 'Trad' arrow for ya.
Now, close mouth, open eyes, and engage your brain.
Tony
bass2xs,
Your last post is similar to liberals showing the photo of polar bears floating on a block of ice because of the melting ice at the north pole. Nice sensationalism and you are playing right into the hand of those who want NO hunting.
Well now I know where I got that magazine from! That's where I read John Eberhardt"s "I pay zero attention to the wind" quote. Yes it's full of crossbow articles and advertisements. I don't care - I ignore them. They are legal in many states. P&Y does not allow them for book entries. Fine with me either way. Don't see any hypocrisy though.
New definition of "hater". = Anyone who thinks for themselves, speaks their mind, and doesn't go along with the group.
That second deer with arrow was real and in nj. They eventually caught it removed arrow and gave it a shot of antibiotics. It was a story in the nj star ledger every day until they caught it. Seems this thread got sidetracked though
Tony, I can think quite well for myself.
The Trad guy was actually hunting and I can conceive a situation where your picture happened...the picture of the deer that I posted which showed up on MY LAWN and discovered by MY KIDS, was not a hunting incident. I do agree with you that a slob is a slob regardless of the weapon of choice.
In MY OPINION, crossbows have opened up the woods to a bunch of people that are not willing to learn how to handle a regular bow and are simply looking to extend their hunting time by using a crossbow as a "short range gun".
As far as your last statement...well, you can just KMA.
10orbetter...want a video of her? PM me your email address and I'll send you a video and plenty of other pictures...there is no photoshop going on.
And as with Jack's post, we have been in contact with a wildlife rescue center who are going to do the same thing with this doe.
Shug x2. I'd say a solid top 5.
Lou sorry for the loss of yr friend
Thanks, Louis. Puts things into a different perspective. As he was dying from the heart attack, I figure he wasn't worried about getting a free magazine.
Tony, How is it that you know that is a 'Trad' arrow? Do you know who shot it? Far as I can tell it could have come from any bow or arrow launching device.
No disrespect meant just pointing out my observation.
Rock, barred feathers and COC point was a dead giveway.....just kiddin'
Rock,
I do not know for sure, but that is a glue on Zwickey and feather fletching. Most Compound guys do not shoot that style arrow.
bass2xs,
If you shoot trad only, then I will listen to you.
If you shoot compound, plus firearms, then you are a closed minded bigoted hypocrite.
. . . and I cannot kiss what you want me too, because your head is in the way, and stuck too far up it.
Tony
Time to go make one of these!!!
P&Y speak out both sides of their mouth. Most of their "Corporate Sponsors" make or sell crossbows or related products. Just like every other time they take a stance on something they roll over when it comes to money. Some day they will accept crossbow kills.
won't waist my time with the p&y crap.
Dumbest non-TBM thread this year for sure.
I too wonder when I subscribed to this rag-mag....never did...
Thanks to the OP, I now know why I am getting it.
Not a bad mag. but different arrow shooting options----gulp!! ha
Good luck, Robb
I watched this thread last week, and yeah, it is pretty hypocritical but its a free rag so it didn't bother me too much. I usually glance it over then toss it. Figured they would drop it soon enough.
So today I get a subscription renewal in the mail for this garbage magazine!! I thought this was free with my membership P&Y?
I have supported P&Y for 10+ years, and defended them through numerous arguments. As minor as this seems, it really makes me want to let my membership expire. Completely hypocritical stance partnering with the magazine in the first place, but now they're billing me? And I'm a little pissed P&Y gave them my information and I'm now on their mailing list.
Huntinhabit same for me. It didn't bother me much magazine was a rag but nothing I hate more than being solicited! P&Y really screwed up here. I hate spam of any kind!
Some dude is so offended at the fact a deer got wounded the decided to post it so anyone in the world with an internet connection could experience it. Einstein!
Someone else just validated the age old saying that some people would find a way to complain about a free lunch. Amazing.
let's get worked up guys!
If a person didn't want it just don't subscribe. It was a free magazine to start with, they can't make you pay for it, ignore the renewals. I wouldn't be surprised if you still got them for free, at least for a little while. My guess was a few issues or the first year was free, trying to attract someone who liked the mag to subscribe. A sample so to speak. So what?
I get a bunch of magazines every month I never subscribed to. Magazines are reliant on advertisers, not selling subscriptions, that only helps offset printing and shipping costs. Advertizing rates are based on distribution/circulation. Many just send the issues out because they have to print them and get them out anyway, it's what they promised the advertisers. Magazines are in the same boat as newspapers and the rest of printed media. Bailing water as fast as they can trying to stay afloat.
Good grief.... folks are getting free stuff and still wizzing and moaning about it.... just toss em then... stack em in the outhouse, whatever. Junk mail? I get about a shoe box of junk mail every day. It's simple sales 101. Just folks trying to make a living in the private sector.
Ignore the renewal requests like the rest of the junk mail and move on to something that matters....like how dare they send me that silly swimsuit edition with my SI subscription.....
Have you sent a letter/email to the officers of P&Y expressing your concerns with the content of the magazine being sent to P&Y members? This website is hardly the appropriate place to express a concern regarding P&Y policy and get any meaningful action or response in return.
Charlie,
I love a good sunset too!
It appears that All these Orgs sell our identity information. I join DU and CWA and suddenly my mailbox is plugged with waterfowl hunting catalogs. I just wished that they would keep our information locked up.
Ollie, yes, I have and hope more people do. Did get a response but don't expect any meaningful action.
