The state of IL asks for the measurement of the deer's face. Distance from the rear of the nostril to the front of the eye. I would assume it is a measurement of age, but cannot find anything anywhere that let's me know how it relates to age.

Anybody seen anything?

It might be to signify age of whether or not it is a fawn or an adult and nothing more.

Or to ask, why the long face? Sorry, couldn't resist.

I agree that it is an indicator of age, but is there something out there that says X=so many years?

Like humans, deer come in different shapes and sizes. I don't think you can come up with an exact age based on the measurements any more than you would with using weight to determine age. It does however give a general indication of age at least in terms of mature vs. immature animals.

Also, I think if you started calling in some 160+ mm does DNR might come knocking on your door. I bet Tom Micetich would give you his answer if you posted on IL Forum.
