I would like to take my son on a black bear hunt. He is in school, so I would like to be able to go and be back before the end of Aug. I'm looking for suggestions. I have looked into NM a bit, they have an Aug 15 opener. Also in NM , we could go with a hound hunter, my son loves dogs. I am open to guided or diy, bait, dogs or spot and stalk.

Any suggestions on states or outfitters?

Thanks,

Gene

Gene, Track down Joe Troyer a great houndsmen from the NM area. I usually don't recommend the competition but I don't do August hunts. June hunts would be better if you are looking for a better hide. http://www.liljoesbiggamehunts.com/

Thanks Skinner. I would like to do June, right after he gets out of school, but that's baseball season for him.

Maine opens end of August. Easy ride from PA.

They might close baiting/trapping/use of dogs season down. The State votes in a few weeks.

Most of the north part of Ontario, Canada has a mid August opener and bait hunt is reasonably priced with some reputable outfitters.

Just another option.

Just got back from an august hunt at plane acres bear camp up near Dryden Ontario. Lots of bears most people saw and got bears. They are sponsors for Bowsite now, and lots of big bears

Not sure about seasons in other provinces but August may limit you to Ontario. Not all bad if you pick the right outfitter.

Pine Acres http://www.pineacresbearcamp.ca/bear.html

North River Outfitters http://www.northriveroutfitters.com

Moose Mountain http://www.cdnbearoutfitters.ca

I haven’t hunted with any of these outfitters but know people who have. All 3 outfitters do very well each year and have great reputations.

Ken Lynn from Moose Mountain used to post here on the Bowsite quite often and has a great reputation. You may have some difficulty hooking up with him because he’s usually booked up with return clients.

Just tried the web address I noted above for Moose Mountain - no longer working. Not sure if Ken is still doing hunts or not.
