We are busy collecting bait and prebaiting wolf stations for the first client that starts Dec13. We had a couple moose hunters who tagged out early and had some fun with the trapline. We trapped these beaver for the fur and bait to hopefully catch a lynx. We will try to keep everyone updated as the season progresses.
I wish I was on the way back there!
Hope you have a great season.
Will see you on 10 Jan carrying my warm clothes.
Once again, can't wait to follow this thread!!
Looks like a couple of kits;>)
What would those guys weigh!!??
I went on a moose hunt in Alaska this fall, & my guide traps lynx in the winter. He said the lynx/snowshoe hare cycle is on the upswing. Is there a specific number of years they cycle before they crash, & where are you guys in the cycle right now?
Also, like BOWNBIRDHNTR & Machias X2!!
One of my favorites! Can't wait!
Not sure how many years there are between cycles but the lynx population in an area is dependant on the snowshoe hare population, and we have been seeing lots of both during the fall season. We used the beavers for lynx bait and caught this awesome lynx on the last day of Jeremy's moose hunt and now it will be lifesized and going back to WA. We ate some of the lynx and will be using the rest for lynx bait during the first trip in Dec. We did weigh the beavers above with a luggage scale, 46 and 55 pounds.

This fall we were lucky to have "The Outfitters Built by Ford F-Series" on the Sportsman Channel book a meat moose hunt with us last minute. We did all of the filming in 5 days and our episode will be airing this Thursday, November 20th at 9:00pm Eastern. It's called "BC Bucket List"
We don't get this channel in Canada and will not be able to view the whole episode until after their 2014 season has finished airing, so if you guys watch it, let us know what you thought!
The whole crew was very professional and a pleasure to take out!
Here is a link to the preview of the show:
I've got an 8:00 pm (central time) reminder set on my phone. I don't watch many hunting shows anymore but will definitely try to catch this one.
I always enjoy this annual thread!! Have you ever eaten Mountain Lion? If yes, does Lynx have a similar taste?
Z Barebow's Link
One of my favorites.
That first pic always reminds me of the embedded link!
My "reminder" is set as well. The Ford people arrived the day I left...Can't wait to see how they turned out.
I have never tried Mountain Lion but everyone I now who has tells me its great. We enjoy lynx with our morning eggs. Today I got a roadkill moose from the game wardens for wolf bait. I ran into my uncle while pulling a lynx set from the last hunt and we caught this nice one today.
Lloyd...Now that Jack is a movie star, does he still eat with the rest of the crew? Or does he have his own chef and dining area... I can't believe you saw that bear....
Great job on the show...very entertaining...I can't believe you saw that bear....one week too late.
Watch the show Good performance your a natural! TV contract is in the mail . Interesting retrieval bringing that moose back to lodge whole. Hope your family life still intact. Driving the back country for five days with that good looking client would have my wife stirred up for sure LoL
My favorite thread of the year........Every Year!!!!!
Very good job on the show. Can't wait to see that bear again!!
They killed that bear a week later...

Jeremy used his pellet gun to get a snowshoe hare to mount with his lynx above, should look great!!!!!! Crazy weather right now, freezing rain, lots of accidents, just received another call from the CO's to pick up another roadkill. Glad to hear the show went well, I won't be able to see it until we can stream it online. Jack
Robin caught herself a marten last night and is skinning to sell for some spending money on our family trip to Hawaii in April.
Good job Robin keep up the good work
Pelts are at the taxidermist's studio from last year's trip, tanned, and waiting for a decision on how I want them mounted.
Was very cool to see that show and recognize a lot of the areas that We visited while it was on my goat hunt. Awesome operation y'all have there and can't wait to go back!
Here's a batch of wolf snares all boiled up and ready to hang. We'll have about 300-350 wolf snares out this year spread out over about 7 bait stations. rock50: can't wait to see your animals mounted.
Do you guys flag or mark all the snares somehow? I just go off of memory but I couldn't keep track of that many. That's like 50 snares at every bait pile. I would imagine you would have all the bases covered. Keep up the good work. I love this thread every year.
Glad your back wait all year for this ! Steve
This is always a great thread. Looking forward to it!!!
I will be doing a mount thread with Marks(rock50) trophies after the new year. We talked last week and nailed down the poses so I can get started. I would like to say the hide prep and field care was excellent.
Good luck!
Looks like Robin is using one of the Havalon knives. How do those work out for you? Just about to order one here.
Hey Lloyd, I don't suppose you could post a few videos of setting up a few bait sites, critters in a set or lay of the land type stuff? BC is one of my favorites places on this earth.
Wayne: for the most part we go by memory, I did start out flagging them but it seems like you see the snare before seeing the flagging. marktm250: the Havalon knives seem to work out good for us, I'd recommend them.
Here's a picture of setting out bait at the new cabin Jack and Shawn built this year.
I can understand that. I just can't grasp remembering that many. Obviously if there is a wolf in the snare it makes it easier to see. I would just worry about the end of the season and trying to pull them all. Obviously you guys have a good system. Keep up the good work.
Lloyd, is the new cabin across the lake from the old cabin or on the same side?
It looks fantastic.
Is that the location of the bait pile right where the machine is stopped?
killinstuff.......a few pics from this past January
One of the prettiest places I've ever been on this earth!
Mark: the cabin is on a different lake that you never went too. The bait is set right about where the ranger is parked. About 200 yards from the cabin window. Yesterday Thomas arrived on the plane and Jack and Thomas checked a few sets on the way out to the lodge with some good luck. Today we're going to check a few more sets and spend the night out at the new cabin to hunt wolves.
While heading to the lodge last night from the airport Thomas had a great start to his trip with a marten and this large Lynx. Lloyd and Thomas just left to check a few sets and spend the night at the new outpost camp to hunt wolves. I picked up a roadkill moose and they will put that out on the ice for bait. Jack
Here is a close picture of the new outpost cabin, we are very excited to start using this for our spring bear hunts to plus its great trout fishing. Jack
well.... ok...somebody take me wolf huntin, ill jump on plane tomorrow !!!!!
We never shot any wolves at the cabin last night but we had a good trip though.
First wolf of the year in a snare in the first station that we checked
A GREAT start!!! Keep it coming.
Jack and Thomas set out an otter trap out in front of the lodge before we left to the cabin yesterday. When we got back tonight we caught one. A good ending to an already great day.
Love this thread every year. Would love to do this some year. Keep the pictures coming.
Great thread. Good luck on the wolves!!
This would definitely be a neat trip!
Do you shoot the wolves at night or day?
Anyone been crazy enough to sit over a bait station with a bow?
Jack/Lloyd,
How long does it typically take for your clients from the US to receive the pelts?
Looking forward to my visit next month.
Russell
I can check the trapline thread more often than checking a trapline, and I am continually excited! Thanks for bringing this back again for 2014/2015.
huntmaster: shooting hours are 1 hour before sunrise and 1 hour after sunset. Shooting one with a bow would take a lot of prep work and patients. No one has tried it yet. Russell: there is a chance that you can take some hides with you if we can get permits in time. They started doing permits locally now instead of having to get them in Victoria. Otherwise it'll be about 6 weeks if they have to be shipped. Today we got a couple more marten and another lynx and a coyote.
Wayne, the snares are usually pretty visible against the snow, even for a novice like me.
They are set in openings (not really trails, but kinda like that idea) that the wolves run through as they go back and forth from the bait to the bush to eat. Most of the bait piles were set on the ice, and the wolves grab what they can and run back to cover to consume it. Being in the openings between small bushes, they stand out.
But I think Lloyd's eyes are very, very, very sharp, too.
another set.
tried to do video but it was twice the size allowed for conversion to BS formats.
maybe for a special thread we could get special dispensation from Pat.
205mb, the limit is 100mb
Thanks Rock. I thought they would be harder to see than that. I can't seem to get away with that here on the coyotes. I have to camo them a lot more or they just walk up to them and then stop and go around. Looks like a real good time.
Do you guys use drag poles ot tie solid, here if we tie snares solid 50% of our coyotes chew through or break the wire.
TSI, I think you are either using the wrong wire/cable or aren't checking them often enough. Give an animal enough time and it will find a way out. I've always been a fan of checking more often but the guys that do it for a living vote for checking less. Gas money will eat up your fur check pretty quick.
Im useing commercial snares,i see them chew through over night if tied solid, very seldom with a drag.
If you're having 50% chew outs overnight, your most certainly using the wrong snares.
Good locks so the snare can't back up are important, sometimes we even file teeth into the lock if it doesn't already have some. Also if chewing out is a problem, fasten the snare lower, sometimes this helps when they pull back and not have it run by there mouth. They can also pull harder this way, tightening the snare and cutting off the blood supply to the head.
interesting stuff. TSI, no offense meant. We all stand to learn something here. We can't attach a snare to a drag here. I think they are worried about a lion taking off with it. Goat Guide has definitely fine tuned his craft for what he's doing. Good stuff.
I have found that by using a snare with a spring and a cam lock with teeth or an amberg lock chew outs don't happen. A lock that won't slip and a spring for that extra bit of tension made a world of difference for me.
TSI- I am no expert, but look at Senneker Snares. This guys has killed more coyotes than Quaker has oats. He has a power snare that definitely eliminates your issue. Do a search on Marty Senneker and it is obvious he knows how to catch canines.
I watched a video of someone who does bait sites for coyotes, very similar to bait sites done by Babine. The guy would take 10+ coyotes from a bait site over a few weeks. He had ZERO concern for scent or camouflage of snares. Basically he would condition the coyotes to come in for a few weeks before he ever set snares. It took a lot of rebaiting, but it was effective.
In the last couple days all we got was a few marten and some weasels. There was wolves that came into the bait at the cabin but it was during the night. Today was the last day and we were able to snare another wolf. Thomas also shot a coyote that was crossing a lake while we were coming back from checking the wolf station. In the morning Thomas will be flying out.
We pulled all the traps and we'll reset them out again after Christmas. The next group arrives Jan. 1.
Great stuff Babine! The info on the snares was educational to say the least! We look forward to January 1!
Mark
Love this thread that pic of the black wolf against the white snow is spectacular!
Great thread. Good luck and Merry Christmas!!!
Good thread I will be looking for your January up date Thanks Trackman
Dennis Razza sent me this pic today.......he just finished the first of the two wolves from last January's trapline trip.
I'm really excited to see the pair together soon. This wolf will set atop a wall about 11' tall and look down in to the room, while the other will be on a rock coming down the side of the wall.
I think Dennis is planning to take the pair to some of the shows he does this winter.
Mark, your wolf is looking pretty awesome. We started putting sets back out the last couple days. One of the wolf stations has a wolverine hitting the bait and we'll spend some extra time this next trip trying to catch it. Still lots of lynx wondering around, looks good for them on the next trip. Over the holidays we got 3 road kill moose and 2 road kill deer for bait.
I can't wait to follow along and check traps with you for the rest of the season! Thanks again for sharing your catch with us. Jeff
That is one of, if not the, prettiest, most natural wolf mounts I've ever seen. Very nice.
A couple more pics from Dennis with the second wolf from my Babine trip in January. I believe he is going to start a thread in the next week or so showing the mounting with the habitats.
This man's skill is amazing!
Excellent...Awesome. I haven't seen a lot of wolf mounts I really like. Those two are incredible.
rock50's Link
Lloyd making a leg hold set last January in this video.
I love this thread. Keep up the great work. I really like seeing the wolves taken. Rock50 I like the wolf mounts. They look good.
Dennis, Will these mounts be at the eastern sheep show? If so can't wait to see them in person.
Great job with the thread again guys!
Fantastic job on the mounts. I love this site>
Those wolves look awesome!!! We have a father son team in camp on the trapline right now and we spent last night trying to shoot a wolf at the new outpost camp. We did see a wolf at 200 yards but he arrived 2 hours after legal shooting time and we could only watch him. He really stood out standing on the ice under the moonlight. After waiting till late morning for him to come back we checked some wolf snares with no luck but caught a couple weasel,a marten, 4 squirrels, and a lynx. Here is Aaron with todays weasel.
Mike and Aaron with todays lynx. Hope to have more tomorrow. Jack
We had a good day checking set.
Every site but 1 that we checked today got something. Our total today was 4 wolves, 2 weasels and 5 marten.
rock50's Link
Lloyd,
Good to see you are getting Mike and Aaron some nice catches. I don't think we ever had a 4 wolf day last year!
If anyone missed this other thread, Dennis Razza posted the mounting of the wolves I brought back from Babine last year.
Yesterday we got a couple lynx, a few more marten and a weasel.
We've been getting a pile of snow the last couple days and today was spent resetting snares. Here's Aaron testing to see where his sled can and can't go.
Looks like you guys are stacking em up!!
Just curious..... In the last pic of Aaron's testing, is that a place where his sled could go or couldn't!!???
He found out that the sled could go there but needed help getting out. He's doing good for his first time on a snowmobile. We all got stuck at least once today.
Awesome pics and thread, thanks for posting, looks like sooo much fun.
Another good day checking wolf snares.
We were on our way to stay at one of the cabins but after we caught these 3 we figured we'd better go back to the lodge and do some skinning.
I have followed this thread annually and I love it.
I have noticed (I might be wrong) it seems like you catch more wolves early in the season and catch rates taper as the season progresses? Is this your observation or am I off base?
If this seems to happen every year, do you think it is because it is
#1- A simple reduction in numbers of catchable wolves?
#2- Or there is a fresh crop of uneducated " young" animals
#3- Or because they are pack animals, do you think the remainders become educated and much tougher to catch?
#4- Combination of all of the above, or other?
Just curious. Thanks and keep it coming.
We normally catch the most wolves in January. I do believe that the middle of Feb. and March our catch numbers are down. Reason is most of the above, wolves get educated, young wolves are taken, and the fact that there are less wolves by then. The later hunts are more successful with shooting it seems though. Every year it seems like new packs move in from surrounding area.
Good to see the Wolves starting to pile up...love it! Keep up the great work, Gentlemen!
Best of Luck, Jeff
Thanks Lloyd- I am not too worried about the wolf population. God will make more.
Another successful day with the wolves. We got our first one of the trip in a leg hold. We also got 3 more marten today too. Tomorrow we're going to go break trail into one of the other camps that we'll start trapping for the rest of the season.
Lloyd/Jack,
I'll be seeing you all Saturday evening arriving on Flt BH314 (Hawkair) at 20:45. (If everything goes smoothly flying and w/ connections).
I see a warming trend arriving Tuesday.
Looking forward to an adventure.
Russell
Mike and Aaron got off on the plane this morning. They got 8 wolves on the trip. I think the most in one trip has been 12. Yesterday we broke trail into another area that we'll start trapping this week coming. We seen lots of lynx tracks yesterday while breaking trail.
Jack/Lloyd... thank you guys for a wonderful trip. My son and I had a great time and couldn't ask for any greater hospitality. Please pass along our thanks to your Mom as well for the great food as well as Jen and Crystal.
For anyone interested in this trip, stop hesitating and get booked. You won't regret it!!
That smoky black wolf looks outstanding
Good to see your wolf management plan in action ours in Wisconsin has been taken over by a judge, Again.
Crystal and I are on our way to Dallas for the Dallas Safari Club Show. We will be exhibiting there from January 15 - 18 at booth #856. If you happen to be in the area swing on by and say "Hi" We will also be at the Washington Sportsmen's Show January 21-25 at the State Fair Events Center in Puyallup, Washington, booth #416, then in Spokane, Washington from March 19-22 at the Big Horn Show, booth 362.
The first couple days of Russell's trip was spend setting out traps. Russell just wanted to trap and not carry any tags for hunting. The first couple days we reset snares and made new pens for lynx. Today we checked one of the wolf stations that was still out from last trip and got this one. Starting tomorrow we'll start checking traps that we set out on the first day.
Here's a coyote that we got this morning in a leghold that we set out lastnight.
I think this is the 4th lynx out of this pen this year.
Just about one of everything today, awesome!
Another lynx and a weasel from today.
Today we built a couple new lynx pens
first fisher of the year. Caught it in a marten trap.
A nice fox to finish up Russell's trip.
Hey Russell, that weather looks a bit different than at Dries' place. Congrats on a great trip.
Amazing thread. I look forward to reading this one each year.
Think I like BC better than RSA. No killer snakes here in BC.
Lloyd,
Thanks for a great time! As expected, my nights are full of dreams riding them "snow machines" and checking lynx snares.
A full week of high adventure and enough snow to last me a many of years.
Looking forward to my next visit in 18 months, this time with my bow and climbing boots.
Russell
very good guys congrats on great trapping curious would those lynx pens work on bobcats back east and if so what trap or snare are you using?Lewis
Your welcome Russell. It was fun. Lewis the same sets would work for bobcat. We're using 1/16 snare wire. We got this big lynx in the first set that we checked on Wayne's trip
we also got this big guy in a leg hold today as well as 3 marten.
been a pretty awesome day
Big boy!! That lynx is beautiful!!!!
Babine Guide,
Love this thread! Thank you for sharing. Can you please advise in your expert opinion the weight of the last grey coloured Timber Wolf?...Yes I am from Canada.....and that is why coloured is spelled that way!
Thanks.
Great job!!! Me and Crystal are in WA at the Puyallup Sportsman Show, hope to see some of you there. The Dallas Safari Show was AWSOME!!!!! Jack
Today was a real slow date. The weather has changed to a warm trend and was raining most of the day. We only got 3 weasels, but we did get a call from a farmer and he had a bunch of bait for us. Rockbass: I'd say that the grey wolf above was around 115 pounds. Most people over judge the weigh on wolves.
Question for the trapping guides.
What do you use to kill the wolves when they're trapped in legholds?
How do they react when you start getting closer?
a .22 is what's normally used to dispatch animals in legholds.
Great to see trapping a Canadian heritage being well recieved.Canada was founded on the fur trade and still is a major source of income for many.Wearing fur is far more friendly to the enviroment than plastic fake fur made from oil byproducts.Good job guys.
I love this thread -- I look forward to it every year! I grew up in PA trapping fur - paid for about 1/2 my college tuition during the early-80s fur price boom. about those snares, do you guys use 7X7 or 1X19 cable? and the 1/16" diameter is for lynx? what about wolverines? coyotes? wolves? thanks for the insights!
We use 7x7 3/32 for wolf and wolverine. If we're using targeting wolverine though we use a stinger spring in snare. We use 1/16 for lynx. Most of the coyote that we catch are in our wolf sets. This morning we got two more wolves and a marten. This afternoon we're going to go set our a few lynx sets.
The other day Jamie, Shawn and I set out a couple burbot lines the other day and tonight Jamie cooked up burbot and sockeye for dinner. Pretty good.
We spent last night at the outpost cabin. Yes those are wolf tracks that went up to the front steps.
We didn't get a wolf but Wayne did get a nice coyote this morning. He made perfect shot (240 yards)
We got this lynx in a pen that Russell and I built last trip. Wayne thanks you Russell.
We also got a wolf in a snare, another coyote in a leg hold, a marten and a weasel today.
You are killing machines! Great job as always!
We went out to the cabin last night again. No wolves came in but it was a successful trip in. 2 wolves and a lynx. We did have a snowmobile break down and the trip and we had to put it out with another one. It didn't slow us down much though. Wayne and Bradley fly out tomorrow night.
a couple big wolves with perfect hair
a ski-doo pulling out a polaris. That 800 can pull quite the load.
You guys put a whooping in the wolves this week! Dang Where was that black one a week ago??! : )
Good looking lynx pen you have there. Looks like it was built under the guidance of a true professional trapper.
Cold weather heading your way.
Keep the pictures rolling.
Tom and Stan got a late start after losing a day being stuck in San Francisco, but got lucky first thing this morning with a beautiful black fox, lynx, and a wolf. Now they're going to an out post camp checking more traps and trying to shoot a wolf.
Thanks keep the up dates I look every day
Here is Stan with the lynx from today. Both Tom and Stan have hunted moose, goat, and black bear in the past with us.
Tom made a great shot on this wolf this morning. He made a 100 yard shot off hand. We were driving back from the cabin this morning and it was in the middle of the road when rounded a corner.
We had a pretty good day getting a wolf(shot), 1 lynx, 3 marten, 3 coyotes, and a weasel.
A money marten.lookin good.
Here's a picture of a fisher that I had mounted and just got back last week.
Looks like I need to do this trip in the future!
Awesome thread. Belonga at the top of the first page.
Aurthur and Jorge had a very slow start for there first day. We checked traps for several hours with nothing then when we thought the day was a dud we caught 2 marten, coyote, and these 2 big toms were caught together in the same pen set that Lloyd and Russel built. We are getting a lot of snow and it is affecting the snares.
You guys are hard on the critters, you sure have a lot of wolves down there and Lynx. Good job thanks for sharing.
It has been slow still for the wolf but we caught some more good critters the last couple days.
It has just been a crazy year for lynx, seems like we are seeing tracks everywhere and this one makes #4 for the trip so far.
Jorge was hunting with us last fall and had a bird tag which he used to shoot these rock ptarmigan. He loves to bird hunt and wanted one bad, now they will be going home with him and be mounted.
How did you ever see those ptarmigan?
They are whiter than the weasels!
How in the world do those critters live in that environment?
Ptarmigan are very white indeed. They are a bit twitchy like all birds so that sure helps. Like most upland birds, they prefer to use their camo for cover and because of that u can get fairly close. I love the way their feet are designed. Gorgeous birds in winter.
Well we could not get a wolf this trip, 2nd time its happened in 3 years but we did finish the trip with a few more marten and another lynx. Today 2 more clients arrived in Smithers this afternoon and we made a quick run to check some lynx traps because it closes after tomorrow, we got very lucky and caught 2 with this one being a huge one. Plus we caught a marten today.
We got all the lynx sets pulled on Sunday and what a finish it was. We got 7 more lynx which make 9 in a day and half. Russell we ended up getting 8 lynx in the pens that we built when you were up.
Here's a wolf Karel this morning. It makes 3 trips in a row getting shots at wolves. Jack also brought a wolf in today from one of the snare stations.
Nothing like having a handful of hot lynx pens! It was fun building those and glad they're fooling them big-footed critters.
When me and Lloyd split up with the clients on Sunday hoping to get them a lynx before it closed I never expected such good luck. Best day I have ever had on the trapline.
Caught all this on there first day on the trapline plus Lloyd caught 2 more lynx and they shot another wolf at the same time. It made for a lot of skinning. What made it even better was that all the animals had great size to them for mounting.
Do you have another pic of the black wolf - that's beautiful.
Wow I wanna go on this trip soooooo bad!!!!
This is one of the only other pictures I have with Rudy dragging his his wolf out of the snare station. Will have some more to update when I get a hold of the pictures.
Wow, a mount with the lynx springing upwards toward those flushing ptarmigan would be a thing of beauty! Lucky guy!
That is a beautiful wolf. I think the black wolfs are the baddest looking animals on earth.
Thanks for posting!
I'd say that was a heck of a way to close out the Lynx season, nice job!!
Beauty job boys! Keep posting Babine, best thread on the web!!!
Things have been very busy but Karel and Rudy finished up an amazing trip. Here is an otter they caught off the dock.
We also got to enjoy some fresh ling cod from some set lines Shawn and Jamie set out.
Some roadkill moose for wolf bait
Good luck continued with the marten, weasel, and they even caught a large mink.
We will see Rudy, Karel, and Rudy again in 2017, after seeing the mountains for several days they have all decided they need a mountain goat.
We approached a snare station with the snowmobiles down the lake and a black wolf crossed in front of us. We watched him for some time until he finished crossing the lake before going into the snare station where we found these.
After a slow beginning to the day with empty traps the guys finished there day and trip with these BIG, AWSOME wolverine. We will keep everyone updated if we catch some more wolves ourselves but this is the last group of clients for the trapline this year. Next year is already fully booked and we plan on doing another trapline thread. I should also mention that we are planning on tearing down our main lodge and building a new one after the spring black bear season. It is going to be a busy summer!!!!
Outstanding thread as always! Thanks for taking us along!
New main lodge? Build it like the postcard on the fridge! :)
It was so much fun relaxing and hanging out with you Lloyd.
Thanks for sharing this thread with us again!
Congrats on another epic trapping season! You might want to post a thread about the yielding of your new lodge!
Thanks for posting,
Mark
Today Jen, Masen and I went out to one of the cabins to put out another road kill moose out for bait. We got this big black wolf in one of the snares. We'll keep a few of the wolf stations out till the end of the month
What's the totals for this year so far? I would think the lynx totals are up but what about the wolves?
The lynx numbers are up by quite a bit. The wolf numbers are holding there own, might be slightly down in our area. We should break 30 wolves by the end of the month.
Today we pulled the snares that were on the way to one of the cabins and had a pretty good last check. 4 coyotes and one wolf.
while out pulling the snares I checked one of the game cameras
there was also probably 300 pictures of rabbits
NICE PICTURES! I would love to do that.
That look like so much fun! How much does a week long trapline hunt cost?
