Awesome post scoot. Makes me wish I had taken more pictures. My dad was just here for 6 weeks hunting and fishing and I was so busy trying to run a deer past him and put him on fish I never got around to taking pictures. I'll probably regret it. You always have them in your mind but the story you just painted with pictures is awesome. Keep doin what your doin. Time goes by faster than you think. Can't wait to see the boy with his first deer. I was 9 when I killed my first and I can remember it like it was yesterday and that was 38 years ago. And my dad was right beside me. Good work and good luck.

We have all done it. I have missed on a deer.....With a rifle, and a bear and a deer with a bow. It is all part of the learning curve.

Heck, I see the "pros" miss in the hunting shows on tv.

Tell him he is in good company with his missed opportunities!!

My guess is he was "aiming" at the whole deer and not picking a spot like he knows how to!!

07-Dec-14
Have missed plenty of times - missed the first elk I ever shot at after waiting 25 years to finally chase them!!!! Got my bull this year. It was even sweeter as it will be for you, Ryan!

I would suggest having him practice from a seated position. You might find that he is anchoring differently or letting the cam rest on or against his thigh without realizing it.

I'm rooting for you, Ryan!!!! Pete

From: NoWiser
08-Dec-14
Oh man, so close! Be sure to tell him that I missed two elk this year and they are about 5 times the size of a deer! It is going to be just plain sweet when he finally gets one. There is still plenty of time left in the season.

Good luck, Ryan!! I've got faith in you!

A miss can happen to anyone, regaining confidence is the key.

I am still struggling mentally with a shot I didn't make last Friday but I will be back out there.

My son also missed a shot last Friday but he turned around and shot a double on Saturday. Both of those shots were perfect.

Don't give up Ryan, it will happen for you sooner or later!

From: deerslayer

Man Scoot, Ryan's hunt brings back so many memories for me.

I was 12 when I shot at my first deer, a big ol' doe. Clipped her brisket. Bummer. The next year at 13 my dad went all out, as only he could do, built a huge wooden ground blind, painted black on the inside and insulated. We set it up in the middle of a big overgrown field and baited it. We spent the night in there and the next evening I took a 20 yd shot at a doe and just like Ryan went right over the top of her back! I didn't have tears, but I was plenty mad! Dad had to spend the next few mins calming me down, and telling me how that was a part of hunting. A short time later she came back again at 20, and that time I nailed her! Man that sure was cool having my dad there.

That was a long time ago, but no matter how many animals I kill I'll never forget that first with my dad. Great job Scoot on being a good dad and spending time with your son. Coming from someone who's dad did the same for him, I can tell you he'll always cherish the memories.

From: Franzen

Chin up little brother! One time I shot all three of my broadhead arrows in my quiver at the same deer and missed each time! I was never able to pinpoint exactly what happened, but sometimes it just isn't your day. The best news is there is another day right around the corner and the deer are still there. Get back out there and good luck.

09-Dec-14
Ryan, Hang in there bud. It will all come together one day. Do you think all of his clothing may be affecting his form? Just a thought. True story, I once emptied my quiver (6) got down collected my arrows and then proceeded to miss 2 or 3 more times that night. Top that!

From: bdfrd24v
10-Dec-14
Well good luck to Ryan.

We've all missed. It happens. I missed a pesky doe twice this year on shots that I would never miss. It happens. Nerves, jumpy deer, nerves, peep sight not straight, nerves... Can be anything.

Just take that nice breath out and let the arrow fly. He will hit home soon. I can feel it.

Again good luck, and I'm rooting for you Ryan.

Tell Ryan to imagine the golf tee on the real deer, just like it's on the Glendel Buck. I'm going to take a WAG and say that he didn't ick a spot, just like flock shooting at birds.

11-Dec-14
Granpa will work the magic! Good Luck! C

From: NoWiser
12-Dec-14
Keep at it, Ryan! I've seen you shoot and I KNOW you can get it done. If you can get a turkey, you can get a deer. There is no doubt in my mind.

That's great that Grandpa is taking him, Scoot. Hopefully they can get out a few more times. My first year ever deer hunting I went with my grandpa. After a week of sitting every afternoon in the cold and snow I shot a nice buck. I can remember, like it was yesterday, how excited I was and the feeling of running up to him and jumping into his arms to give him a great big hug when we walked up to the deer!! I've since shot many deer hunting with my dad, but that memory of Grandpa and I is the best. He keeps the picture of the two of us and the deer on the table in his nursing home room where I see it every Thursday when I visit him to play cards. I would like nothing more than to see Ryan create the same memories!

You've still got time, good luck!!

12-Dec-14
Can you take a 3d target into the plot and take some practice shots? I agree with JLS, I think Ryan needs to pick a spot and Ryan I know you read these and I know you are feeling down but buddy, it IS going to happen. No doubt! It might not be this year but you are 12 years old, you are going to kill a lot of deer in your life.

From: otcWill

From: bdfrd24v
12-Dec-14
Here is my $.02

Tell him to concentrate on just breathing out when he lets the arrow fly. Just relax and release the arrow with your breath.

Just like the old military acronym for shooting.

BRASS Breathe Relax Aim Squeeze Shoot... Granted that's for firearms, but same deal.

I've found its that breath out that makes all the difference in the world. Calms the nerves and the shakes.

NOW GO GET EM RYAN!

From: Copperhead
12-Dec-14
This is one of the best threads on the internet.

Tell Ryan to forget about the misses. The only shot that is important is the current shot he is about to make. Tell him to remember the progressions of his shots at home when he's practicing. If he repeats them he will hit his target. Also let him know that I hunted for 20 years before I had my first bow kill. Sometimes I would only get 1 or 2 opportunities at a decent shot per year. I have had way more misses than I can remember. I don't take shots that are iffy and I've beat myself up over many a shot that I felt I should have made. A short memory on missed shots is your best friend. Also as many have pointed out it's not about the kill, it's about the time spent creating memories of a lifetime.

Good Hunting Ryan and way to go Scoot.

From: LTG 11
12-Dec-14
My guess is he is either "punching" or "peeking". Remind him to gently squeeze the release and focus on following through the shot. You can watch the arrow for him.

Good luck, Buddy.... tonight's the night!!!

Scoot, first of all I really admire you and your father for taking time with your children. they will never forget it. I hand rather have a clean miss than a bad hit any day. I have been bow hunting for around 50 years and still today I have to talk o myself before the shot, pick a spot, aim for off hand leg. Rayen you can do it. I like the idea of the 3d buck target in the food plot, shooting out of the ground blind, minus the golf tee. Go get them RYAN. Forrest

From: Drahthaar

Scoot, just thinking. looking at the first pitcure of right before Ryan shot , the deer had his head ,ears toward you two, I think what could be happning is the deer are JUMPING the string. you might want to wait until you see the back of the deer ears. Forrest

From: Drahthaar
13-Dec-14
Soot, yes having fun is what it is all about. no I can't see a deer jump the string with my eye. not wanting you to make excuses, just thinking. a video camera would tell you, and be cool to have also. I shot a doe last week 3/4 away, when I recovered the deer the exit wound was coming out towards the rear. no doubt she spun towards me on the shot. Forrest

I'm not positive of this, but I think I might hold the record for the most misses before taking a deer with my bow:). In my first two seasons when I was 12 and 13 years old, I missed 13 deer with the bow!!! Tell Ryan to hang in there! He has a long way to go to break my record!!:))

Im with the guys saying to make sure to pick a spot! After all my misses as a kid, my dad had me take the paper plate off the hay bales ( no 3D targets then ) and just shoot at the bale with no small target to aim for. He told me to just pick a spot on the bale and shoot for it. It must of worked because in my 3rd year, I killed the first deer I shot at! I even taped a little piece of paper to the inside of my bow limb and wrote " pick spot" on it so I would see it constantly to help me remember.

Good luck Ryan!! This is the one thread I make sure to check every day!

Scoot: When my son Matt shot his first deer I put him in a stand by himself. My thinking was he needed to be by himself without out "undue pressure" (me)! Poof, dead deer! Maybe you could set him up and disappear?

Scoot, Great thread and thanks for sharing. This reminds me of my 1st deer season 39 yrs. ago. What my Dad did with me was he would set me in a stand and then he would set up his own stand fairly close, say 40 yards max from me. We could see each other and could somewhat communicate with hand signals. Back then if we even saw a deer it was a big deal. If its any consolation, it took me 19 yrs. to kill my first deer with a bow. Tell Ryan to hang in there and good luck. I believe he will do it. Remember to "pick a spot and follow through". Watch the arrow all the way to the target. I am sending good vibes to you fellas.

Oh and Scoot, my praise goes out to you for taking the time to teach your children how to hunt and about the outdoors. Well done Sir!

I can't believe I have missed this thread until now. Nothing better than bowhunting with your kids. Both my son and daughter arrowed their first deer when they were 10. My son was sitting with his grandpa when he shot his 8 point and my daughter with me when she shot her doe. Both cried tears of joy when they got the job done. Good luck to you guys, looking forward to following along.

Scoot, We've got some slow sits going on down here around Alexandria, MN as well....18 degrees tonight just doesn't cut it with those winter coats on.....2 deer for me is it.

Been enjoying your story. This part stinks, and it stinks bad.

On a positive note, Most high hit deer survive a bow hit! Probably around 90%. Especially low poundage bow.

The deer Frank got last week dropped too and he barely hit top of lungs. He was aiming high heart. I had a huge buck drop to my shot this year and hit him high. He lived at least 2 weeks into gun season.

Especially this time of year sound echos bad and deer are jumpy. Gotta shoot for heart, they drop.

Never Ever Give Up!!!!!

Good luck guys.

From: BOWNBIRDHNTR

Several years ago my son hit a buck high. I looked everywhere imaginable for 2 days even though I was fairly certain it was a non vital hit. It seems as a parent we just never want to give up hope of recovering the animal and then getting to see the smile back on our kid's face. Unfortunately both the kids and parents sometimes have to deal with not so fun side of hunting as well.

Even if this season comes to an end without a deer, try to focus on all the fun times you've shared and keep shooting. Next season will be a fresh start and a time for more terrific memories.

Hang in there guys, these things happen to everyone unfortunately and the good news is the deer will most likely be fine! I remember as a young man missing all kinds of deer until I finally connected on one. I bet I missed a half dozen or more times until I finally got lucky. It'll happen for Ryan too! Best of luck to you both! The memories you've made with Ryan and your family and shared with the rest of us are priceless!

Get him back out there if you can. Don't worry about seeing anything or shooting anything. But be ready. Take some cards or a book to read together. Don't really think of it as a day hunting, just a day in the woods. You never know but if that deer is still live, who knows, he might come back and surprise you and give your son another shot. But Don't talk about that. Just try and get him to spend some time with you in the blind again!!

Scott, thanks for sharing Ryan's hunt with us. My daughter followed along closely as well since she is going on her first archery deer hunt next fall. We've all been cheering Ryan on and praying that he'd connect! In the end I think that he did connect perfectly with one of the most important things in life, his dad. God bless you guys. Great thread, great lessons of perseverance... And a great photo of the skunk hat silloutte against the sunset- that will will never be forgotten by either of you. My eldest sone hunted his entire first season when he was 12 with similar results to your boy's. It was the last hunt of the following year before he connected. Then again, my daughter brought her first deer down with the first arrow she ever loosed in the woods. That's, as everyone says, hunting, I suppose.

Then again, I unted for at least ten years with a bow before I ever brought any meat home. I had no mentor, just a few magazines and a lot of bad advice from the few locals that sold arrows.

Our kids are lucky hey have dads that will teach them how to hunt, and cut down that learning curve... but even more so, we ourselves are lucky to have kids that will hunt with us.

03-Jan-15
Ryan, my first season, I was a lot older than you and I ended my season with one wounded deer that I never recovered and no meat to show for it. That experience made me a better hunter and I've had more to show for it every year since.

Don't feel bad about how your season went. You had a great season out there with your dad, sister, uncle, and grandpa. My grandpa's ashes rest in Lake of the Woods, not too far from you. I'd give every antler hanging in my house to sit in a blind with my grandpa, even if we never saw a deer.

It's all about the chase son. Taking a deer home is just the icing on the cake.

From: Candor
03-Jan-15
Awesome write-up. Thank you for chronicling your season.

I would say that he'll be better off for persevering and not achieving all his goals. Sounds like his goals were perfectly balanced between difficult and attainable.

And one day it'll happen so easily it will be confounding how easy and how difficult the same thing can be....

I know all kids are different, but 10 is REALLY young to be bowhunting. Very few kids at that age have the physical ability, and more so, the emotional maturity, to hunt and deal with the things that can happen (see thread above). I know he wants to go and you want him to go, but at some point (last year), you should have pulled the plug. He was not ready. He shouldn't be the one deciding if he goes or not, it should be your call as a parent to decide. It is obvious he was not ready, and there is nothing wrong with having him wait until he is ready. I know it's hard, but you have to do what is best for him in the long run.

Both of my teenagers bowhunt, so I know how hard it is to decide when they are ready, because you want them to experience all the things you have already experienced in the woods.

Good luck this season! I hope it works out well.

30-Sep-15
