Got lucky this fall! Thinking should of waited maybe another year on him....

From: Woodsman416

...or two. He's barely past a button buck!

Congrats!

28-Jan-15
If you are happy with him, then you did the right thing. Unless there is a law or rule about shooting minimum age class or antler size deer, I say you should not let others tell you what you should and should not shoot.

BTW, congratulations on a great deer. I would have shot him as well.

28-Jan-15
great buck! did you happen to shoot him after getting off work at the coal mine? I wouldn't have waited ...

From: red140

I would off only passed him if he was on 1000 high fenced acres and you had a "Chris Kyle" posted every 1500 yards with a Chey-Tac 408 to watch your neighbors.

Great buck!

LOL on the coal mining comment. I've been picked out of a tree more times by not wearing face paint so now it's more of a routine. We had a wet fall here in Iowa and had 2 trail cams fall off the tree (da*n plastic buckles) and submerge under a 12" of water. In other words, I had no idea this deer was there. He was coming down a ditch right to me and got to 30 yds and started to turn around to head another direction. (I thought about letting him walk knowing I have a 13 year old boy bowhunting as well) But then I seen his little drop tine, 21" spread and couldn't resist. I bleated with my mouth at full draw and he gave me a 35 yd chip shot. Ran 40 yds and tipped over.

I look at all the other Elk hunting pics on this site and it is a dream of mine to shoot a quality bull with my bow. I have 1 bull under my belt with a rifle, but it's not the same. I have 13 PP for Colorado and continue to get them...but honestly, I have no idea where to go. I'm probably spoiled with whitetail hunting living in Iowa my whole life and have shot some great deer over the years (I'm 40) but there is still a hole inside me missing.

Yea you screwed up, should have waited at least one more year maybe two. The least you could do is give someone else a chance at shooting him. Nice buck.

I honestly never put a tape to him. if I had to guess....175" +/- 5"... It was kinda warm that morning so I took him straight to the Taxi. I won't get him back till next Dec.

have you ever killed a bigger one????????????????????

30-Jan-15
He's a great deer. I think you are trying to sound like something besides happy. You could never expect to kill a main frame eight point that big in any state more than a time or two, in a lifetime of hunting. He is likely going to gross in the 150's with the junk thrown in. A really good deer that no one can claim to kill regularly unless you are very blessed with great land to hunt. But, he is far short of 175 or 170. God bless

13 Points in Colorado is a bad place to be. In the middle of no man's land. You should hope they return to point banking. Same for me at 18. I've taken 4 bulls between 320-350 yet finally accomplished my first trophy quality whitetail this year (162 P&Y). Yes you live in the promised land, I hope to draw IA again next year. Congrats on nice buck. If you have no other elk points out west, your best bet is to get serious about New Mexico.

Call your taxidermist and have him rough score the deer. Takes the guess out of it, anyway that you measure it is a great deer.

My brother killed a monster this year that scored 131. The buck was 5 1/2+ and had a live weight of 273lbs. A great DEER is a great DEER regardless of score. I to posted a buck that most guessed at 150. When taped it grossed 177 5/8 and netted 1702/8 with that said I too would like to know gross score.

Some of these guys are very good at scoring but sometimes pictures do not tell the story.

Amazing how some guys who've never seen the rack in person are able to tell the score from just one pic. lol

Congrats...he's a great buck!

" He is likely going to gross in the 150's with the junk thrown in"

He's bigger than that ....low 170's even if I don't see the 21" inside spread

I would shoot him the first day of the season

Here are a couple deer I already have mounted in my office. The clean 9 point scored in the 50's and the deer with all the trash scored in the 70's...These are gross scores. The deer with the trash has an unbelievable amount of mass. I can't get my hands around his bases.
