I've got my best bear from this Spring salted and stored and have decided to have it made into a rug. I'm trying to decide which taxidermist to send it to. It's a really nice 7.5 squared hide so I want quality. Please post pics of your rugs with the name of the taxidermist.

Just as important as a mount that is anatomically correct and pleasant to look at, you also need to look at how it was put together. Rugs should be sewn and not glued. You should look at the back side to make sure quality materials were used and it should also have hooks sewn in so it can be hung up. Rmwildlifestudios.com

Cool stuff. Next bear will likely get to be a rug... or welcome mat or something....
I was just glad this wasn't the anti-manscaping thread....

I am sure there are others; although I have yet to see any rugging compare with Kim Albertoni from Montana. She "tuck and roll" pleats all rugs and every inch is sewn. She has a "gazillion" colors of felt to choose from, and provides 2 for the base cost, with 3 available for an extra fee. She also incorporates hooks and uses nothing but the finest rug backing on her work. Her turnaround is excellent, and her hospitality over the phone is Super, as her husband is a master taxidermist.....so "she gets it" as far as the overall scope of hunting. I have no monetary interest in her business, just a very satisfied customer who has sent two bear of my own and a dozen from guys I hunt with.

In the open mouth poses, do they use the bear's skull or is that reproduced?

We got one from Kim Albertoni in Montana and it was outstanding and very satisfied. Would recommend her in a heartbeat. The last one for my grandson was from Harley White in BC. I was so happy with it I made sure mine from this spring went to Harley in Kelowna. He is incredible.

Oh, this bear was done by that place in Colorado Springs that ripped off a bunch of hunters and skipped out on clients. Mine was finished before all of that transpired.

The one thing that my taxi does to set him apart from others is how he fills the underside of the hide. Makes the bear look more full and the hair does not mat or lay down.

We had a rug made from Millie's first bear (2003 time frame) and noticed that it had started to come apart - on closer examination we discovered it had been glued instead of sewed.
Someone on Bowsite recommended I contact Kim Albertoni for the restoration and I'm glad I did. We got the sent the rug out last September - just before we move to Tennessee and got it back in April.
The rug looked better than when it was new. I plan to use her IF (or when) we have another rug made. I can post a photo of the resewn rug next week when I'm back at home.

After viewing these photos, one thing comes to mind. Ask upfront what kind of felt will be used on your bear rug. Unfortunately there are some really nice bears on here with less than attractive felt.

Jack Pine nailed it! The quality of the felt makes a huge difference in the end result. It should be a heavy wool felt, not the thin craft grade material you find at your local material store . Also, the felt should never cover the entire underside of the rug. Felt picks up every piece of dirt and after a few years it's impossible to remove. The backing should be made of a light canvas or similar material that will last a lifetime.
