Area 40 in Colorado Elk,hunting any good

Anyone ever draw tag for area 40? Is this area worth applying for? Takes 7 yrs for NR
Mostly private, some of Colorados largest Bulls roam there.
I have hunted with a friend in the unit before (his tag). We saw several great bulls on private property. A couple of 300 class bulls on FS. There was a lot of pressure on the public area and we even had several hunters doing a "drive" during the archery elk season in an attempt to get bulls to go by there stand locations. Long story short....I wouldn't go there but I would think you might be able to kill a good bull if you were very lucky.
Unit 40 is probably the best big bull unit in Co.. But you will have to paid to hunt it. All that I've seen, it starts about $3000k and up from there for trespass hunt. On the, I think one small piece of Nat forest. On day 2/3 of the season start. The elk are just about pushed off. I think if I remember right some guided hunts we're 12K... Ed
Thanks for all the information. Will look elsewhere.
Hey Teeton, do you have any leads for tresspass only hunts in Unit 40? Don't want guided, just access.
I have leads on a place if your interested ..
Cajunarcher,
Is that from private land or was the a public land bull? PM me the information if you would rather not say please. By the way...very nice bull!
I would interested in that info if you are willig to give it out. Like I had said...I saw great bulls on private and would go there if you had acess to good private land.
Yes, please PM info. Thanks.
Too much to pm I'll send y'all my number and I can give all info over phone .
About 2/3 years ago I started researching u-40. I had about 4 places that had trespass fee hunts. Every year I get a note book to write all my hunting info in, I had about 7 or 8 of them. On the cover I put hunting and then the year. Like "Elk Hunting 2011" I kept all my research for that year in them. About a year or so ago I had them books in a old boot box with all my maps and so on. They were in my truck with a fishing pole, boot wades, fishing box and my sleeping bag.. Someone broke in and stole them all. Now I have been able to replace everything else but what was in them books. One of them places is the places I think Cajunarcher is talking about. He may have more now??? I remember his place as I've chatted with him on the phone and now friends on fb..
I'm tying to find what to do with 17 Co points and I keep going back and fort with u-40 trespass hunt or at least a 14 full days diy in u-76. U-40 I think last year a nonres needed 8 points, But to get good hunting you got to pay and that keeps the points some what lower and in u-76 a nonres needs 12. Next year I think I'm just doing (elk) Co otc or a general tag in Wyoming. 2017 I'm going to do either moose in Alaska or elk in U-40 or 76.. Well that's kinda the plan at this time anyway, but things do change... :) ..... Ed
Teton, I'm in the same position as you. I have 15 points as a nonresident and I'm thinking I might as well burn them. Never catch up to 61 so kind of in limbo. I would like to hunt 76 but I don't have any friends with enough points. I know I could go guided in 76 but have always preferred doing it on my own. Thought about a solo hunt but getting a bull out would be be darn near undo able alone. Not to mention the wife almost had a cow when I mentioned going by myself! I'm 58 and in good shape so I figure nows the time to use them. I would love to hear input from anyone that has hunted 40.
Test Man -
76 can be done by yourself. There is a guy who'll pack your animal out for a reasonable fee.
Its worth the opportunities as I killed a nice bull there last year and felt like I had several opportunities just in 5 days of hunting.
Thats my two cents
Thanks adbowhunter. I sent you a PM.
I hunted it this year on public ground and would be happy to share my new found knowledge. PM me if interested. BTW I didn't get a booner, but a 300ish bull. Cheers.
I've hunted 40 a number of times and it's a tough hunt on public. Unless you want to pay a fairly stiff trespass fee you may want to look elsewhere.
