I have some property in North Central NM that burned in 2011. Some native grasses are returning and the elk and muledeer are grazing in what used to be my lawn. Does anyone have any information on what I could plant at an elevation of 8500 ft? I tried broadcasting winter rye and winter wheat, but only succeeded in feeding the turkeys for about a week.

Thanks, --Bill

contact the local ag extension and/or the local game biologist, they can recommend what to plant and not plant in your area, good luck and have fun!

Agree to talk to a forest service or blm biologist and they are going to steer you towards any native bunch grasses..

Thank you, my wife and I are looking forward to reclaiming our property and helping the local wildlife.

Try planting Small Burnett. It's a perennial forage that thrives out West and is very drought tolerant. Know as "deer candy" to the folks the live and hunt around it.
